Patient with our party of 12 showing up later than expected
Food, ambience, and service was great!! Not a lot of vegetarian options! Overall great experience!
Great ambiance, great food selection. The amount of salt, oil and sugar ingredients not ideal for my personal taste. Many young people and families there. A very nice atmosphere.
This restaurant is an investment. However, it is some of the most thought out food I have had in a long time. The service is great and I never ran out of chips and salsa. I highly recommend getting at least one margarita as most do when dining here.
The food was absolutely amazing.
We were fortunate to be in the smaller back room away from the bar. We were aware of the noise level so was a very fun evening!
Amazing food by the Jose Andres think food group. There's a lunch menu where you pick from a few categories. Great place to eat! So delicious. Great service.
I have been to this restaurant multiple times and every time the experience has been incredible.
The food is insanely amazing. Which Is exactly why we decided to come again! What made us upset was our waiter, Amir (I’m not sure about spelling). We were there celebrating a very huge occasion and he could tell something was happening so we told him the occasion, he said oh that’s amazing congrats how about shots for the table and said something else (sorry I don’t remember) in a manner that insinuated they were on the house. We are not moochers, but I accepted his *gesture* and said wow that is incredibly kind thank you! He brought 5 patron shots out in champagne glasses.
Then we get our bill... $70 of shots was right at the top. Such a shady move! Hindsight 2020 we should have notified a manager because not all of the shots were even taken, but we just ate the cost. We were shocked that he alluded to something being on the house and then charged us.That situation was just so distasteful - especially for a restaurant of this caliber.
The food was delicious. We were encouraged to try some new foods, and we did.
My only complaint is the noise level because it grows tiresome to have to raise your voice throughout the meal. This is the thing that makes me think twice about dining with you.
Wonderful food and service. It was very difficult to have a conversation as the noise level was pretty high. Maybe some way to dampen the noise otherwise it was awesome
We were visiting Washington DC and wanted to have a very special dinner at a José Andres restaurant. We chose Oyamel and it was the perfect choice. Mexican food but not the run of the mill Mexican food. Everything we ordered had unusual ingredients very well done. We also loved having dishes “tapas style” so we were able to try many more dishes than we usually would. An outstanding experience.
I love Oyamel and it is a restaurant I visit whenever I’m in dc. Jose Andres is an inspiration to us all. Our waiter Jay was awesome and very accommodating to my celiac.
Short story: the food wasn't worth the hype or the price, but it was well-prepared, all of it was solid, some of it was good, nothing was great. I was very disappointed, and I wouldn't go back unless it was for a Happy Hour menu or something at a discount.
Everything you would expect. Had lunch during vacation with out two kids. They had selections off the menu for kids (that were amazing) and also had some of the other items. Great food and flavors and service. Took the dare and ate the Chapulines. Great lunch that will last a lifetime.
The food was amazing! I especially loved the refried beans with cheese and tortillas on the side. Also I really loved the mushroom and the fish tacos. The signature margarita was absolutely fantastic! I have not had a margarita that delicious. I highly recommend this place.
Great experience. Graysel was an excellent waiter. The food was out of this world.
about your question whether I would recommend Oyamel... Probably, but only to someone who has not been there before. Seems that the quality of food and experience is slipping. Cannot pinpoint exactly what it is, but the food does not seem as flavorful as few years ago. Oyamel was our favorite go-to spot whenever we are in DC for late lunch and I do not recall leaving not quite satisfied, but menu is getting tired and not the same quality of preparation we come to expect. Again, personal opinion, but we are likely to find some other place. Hate to say it, but seems that the same thing happened to Jaleo, just much longer ago - and it was there on 7th for much longer too. A disappointing trend.
They did not have all the items in the menu. Service was slow. But the food and ambience is great.
Since I am allergic to shellfish, it was great that they had a special allergy menu which listed which items were safe for me. The mole poblano was wonderful.
Clearly the best Mexican food in town. Very enjoyable.
Great meal! My girlfriend and I ate here for dinner. Food, drinks and service were excellent. However, we were seated next to a very loud table which put a blemish on the experience. We had trouble even speaking / hearing each other. We were surpised the party wasn’t better controlled by staff - or even asked to leave as they were very disruptive and obnoxious.
The food is delicious with exciting new flavours and the service is great. The only problem is that it is very noisy and it is hard to have a good conversation.
Way too loud to enjoy any conversation. Do not recommend.
Food was delicious! Salsa and chips that come with the meal was amazing. The ambiance of the restaurant fit the entire restaurant's theme very well. Service was a bit slow, however.
The ambiance at Oyamel was great. We have two small kids so the noise was kind of perfect for us. Our server was wonderful and very attentive. The food was really terrible. We ordered
papas y mole, brisket and pork tacos, ceviche with sea bass, and the plantain squash fritters. The fries with mole literally tasted like wet dog. The Guacamole was extremely bland, the ceviche was slightly too fishy in taste and the citrus marinade it was in tasted like very watered down orange juice. The pork tacos with pickled onion tasted very similar to the mole sauce that was on the fries which again, gave it that very off taste. It was fun being there and the service is great but our food just didn’t taste good
Great energetic vibe and service. However, food was fair and lacking in value for what was charged.
Great place for a birthday lunch. Loved the guacamole and shrimp torta. Cheerful atmosphere.
I was disappointed. I felt rushed by a waiter who did not really have waiter skills, and the food was ordinary at best, soggy and without much flavor. I would not return.
Delicious food at great prices! Fun environment and great drinks! They also had special menus for vegetarians and people with allergies.
I’ve been to Oyamel many times, but I’m not sure I’ll be back - the food was great, as always, and the service was good, but the noise level was almost painful. (“Energetic” doesn’t begin to describe it.) if we hadn’t a show to go to immediately after dinner, we would have left and found someplace else.
Tim, our server was excellent. He didn't rush us and kept coming by to refill water and make sure all was well. Oyamel is a favorite and didn't disappoint.
Oyamel is our favourite restaurant for a date in Penn Quarter area. The food is always delicious.
It was alright, nothing memorable. To be one of the best Mexican restaurants in the DC list, it leaves a lot to be desired.
Great restaurant unique offerings. Service was good but not great. Guacamole is a must!!!! Also desserts were inventive and delicious. Rest of food was good but not exceptional.
Food was fantastic with great service.
Absolutely loved this place! Great options for vegetarians!
Honestly this place is amazing. Everything we had was excellent. Must try the margarita with foam and the beef ribs!
Oyamel offers imaginative, authentic and well prepared dishes from several regions of Mexico. It's definitely not Tex-Mex! The margaritas are great! Service is fast despite the usually crowded atmosphere.
Interesting food in a nice, relaxed setting. Good value and good service.
