We were seated in the back room so it was quiet and pleasant. Great food, great service, fun place.
Your host is fabulous as always! Delish food (still my fav Brussel Sprouts in the area) and atmosphere.
The dessert was amazing!! Café de la Olla
The Oyamel margarita is amazing! The food was delicious with interesting combinations of flavors. The noise level is high so don’t plan a quiet night out here, but a fun, vibrant place for a night out with friends.
The restaurant was very crowded, as expected, but the noise level was very high. We sat in a booth and as soon as I sat down I felt as if I needed to request a phone book to sit on, as either the seat was very low, or the table was very high. I'm 5 foot 8 inches tall. The food and the service were wonderful. I would like to return.
Yes, I would recommend Oyamel, but with caveats. It's not cheap. It's not filling. Drinks are tiny. The place is REALLY loud, like, you're going to be shouting to your table neighbor just to be heard. A bit too "energetic" for this laid-back Californian.
The food, what there is of it, is quite good. Starting with the chips and salsa, adding guacamole. Very nice complement to a (tiny) margarita or a (really tiny) mojito. (What? No sangrias???)
You'll need at least 2 of their tapas plates to feel at all satisfied. Our first pair of plates were the chicken tamale w/mole sauce and the chicken enciladas (2). Both were very good. Our second pair of plates were two brisket tacos. Also very good.
Great authentic and inventive Mexican food, but uncomfortable booth seating - too low and very hard. So either get them to fix the booth seats or get a table, but you'll love the food.
It was refreshingly different and I enjoyed the adventure. Food was delicious. Lots of choices.
A meal at Oyamel is almost always delicious. Worth putting up with the inevitable high noise levels at lunch time!
The grasshopper tacos are the reason we came here. Definitely an attraction for people with adventurous tastes. I came with a date, and we both had experience eating "unusual" meals, so that was a draw. The grasshopper tacos were very interesting, like eating a crunchy vegetable. They were overly salty though, but just the right amount of spice. The margaritas were good too. We ordered the sandia (watermelon) salad, and it was the right level of spicy along with sweet. The plating for the salad could have been better, or maybe it would have looked better served in a bowl. Ambiance was good. I did see a worrying number of poor reviews for this restaurant on Yelp, but thankfully our experience was good. We ordered other "mainstream" tacos to counter our bold grasshopper taco experiment, and I have to say these tacos -- goat, chicken -- didn't taste that much different from any other soft taco from other similar restaurants. Our server was attentive and good about recommending drink pairings. Our food also came out at a reasonable time given that it was dinner rush. In all, we had a very good experience and I would definitely recommend.
This was my first trip to Oyamel, although the friends I met for lunch had both been before. The decor is delightful, with all sorts of butterflies - painted on the windows, floating from mobile sculptures - very fresh and inviting. The service was excellent - our server did a great job of explaining the menu and answering questions. The food is truly outstanding, although expensive. I would definitely return for a special occasion.
We had a pleasant dinner. The food was tasty although somewhat pricy for the portions. Service was excellent.
Great food, great service, great tapas!
Everything was tasty, specially the atún ceviche!!
Everything was delicious. Our server was very knowledgable and helpful. I honestly don't think the guacamole is worth the price. Everything else was, though. My favorites were the ahi tuna ceviche and the brisket taco. Others in my group loved the chicken enchiladas. The desserts were so creative and yummy!
We have been Oyamel before, but never sat in the back room until now. As we were together with old friends who just moved back to DC, it was great to be able to talk, not scream to be heard, and able to hear all in the conversation.
The food and service were excellent, as always.
Very nice as always.
The tuna ceviche is one of the best dishes I’ve ever had in my life. And I’ve probably ordered it about 50 times. I loved the chayote salad but I remember when you used to slice it thinner and fan it out in a line on a rectangle plate and I liked that presentation better.
Every single dish was fantastic, if a little smaller than expected. Some of the best guacamole we'd ever had. And the mole was wonderfully rich and chocolatey. We were feeling a little adventurous, but weren't up for trying a whole taco with crickets, so our waiter brought us a half teaspoon full or so - enough for us all to try them. They were surprisingly tasty! Might even try the taco next time.
Wonderful food and very attentive service!
Fresh food, tasty, authentic
You can't beat the $20 three course lunch. The food was delicious and plentiful and the service was fast and friendly. I believe that it's important to support Jose Andres in any way I can so that he can continue his great work helping people.
It was pretty good, went for the “fast lunch” of several items for $20. The place was full.
Amazing food, the cultural Experience meal was worth every bit of money... so many new flavors and so much food... ps I didnt even know guacamole could be that good.
Terrific food. My favorite was the tres leches cake. Outstanding service.
The food at Oyamel is delicious. It is also a place where people with celiac disease and food allergies can dine with confidence that their needs will be safely addressed. Three cheers for Oyamel!
Exceptional! Guacamole is terrific. Chicken soup as well. Great service.
Great drinks and great tapas.
We had the menu experience again. Great as always especially the guacamole, ahi tuna, and banana custard.
Jose Andres doesn’t disappoint. Excellent food and drink. Helpful and friendly servers. Definitely get the Margaritas Jose’s Way with the “salt air”. Wonderful.
Was very surprised that there were so few vegetarian options. Especially in light of Jose Andres new book. Will probably find a more veg friendly place in the future. Jaleo does a much better job.
We've dined her before and really enjoyed it. Our service was poorer than previous visits. The food was tasty, but not as memorable as past visits. An off night.
Heard great things about this place so I was excited. The food was excellent but tables were like 12 inches apart so I was enjoying my date w six other people. Plates are kinds sections of a meal so rice is one $10 dish refried beans were another selection. Ceviche was perfect though!
I love the many flavors of Oyamel’s guacamole and drinks, however they are quite expensive. You have to be in the right mindset to spend $16 on guac, but it’s SO good and ALMOST worth it. I’ve been here for both meals and drinks, and I prefer to drinks. I don’t think this is the best option for Mexican food in DC.
I typically love the decor and ambiance, but I do NOT recommend sitting outside. It feels like they were desperate for extra tables so they slapped some additions outside, with no real connection to the restaurant. There’s not a true pathway or door connected to outdoor seating or enough space to close it in. Because of the lack of space on the old sidewalk, our table sat at an angle the entire time and we had to wedge our tables to make them not tilt for our meal. We sat very close to the street and side walk, so there were a lot of noises from that as well (obviously expected when sitting outside, but when combined with the uncomfortable seating, it’s even more noticeable).
Early, quite brunch when they first opened. Great quality food as usual, but exceptionally quick service wrt drinks and food. Another great experience. A very reliable restaurant with high quality ethnic foods.
Like every other Jose Andres restaurant, this one is wonderful. "Mexican" food is everywhere, but this is the real deal. And what could be better on a warm summer evening than to sit outside and enjoy some cool ceviches?
Great food, service and margaritas.
Service was Poot in that the waiter was hardly available
Food was not as good this time - maybe we didn’t order the right options
The pineapple tres leche was AMAZING!
Dinner was great and so was service. Ambiance is beautiful as always.
Food was amazing! Great ambiance. Service was mediocre, waiter was not attentive or particularly friendly.
