Limited menu, but the coq au vin was delicious, the steak came out medium instead of medium rare. Uncomfortable seating, especially the 2's too close to the hightops and the bar.
Knowledgeable and efficient service.
Unable to obtain a 5 pm reservation either thru open table or a direct call to the restaurant.
After six tries I obtained a 5 pm res. on open table and we were the only one of two tables occupied? Around 6:30 pm more guests arrived.
Good Appetisers but the menu is limited.
Fish was overcooked.
Would not return.
DISAPPOINTING, SORRY TO SAY!
We went with high hopes as we’re looking for a new place for dinner out in our neighborhood but, unless they improve their game, this isn’t it. A lot of the seating is “ice cream parlor” chairs. They either need to get bigger tables or smaller plates. The waiter told us one of the specials and then returned a good ten minutes later to say he’d been given the wrong information, so my husband had to place a new order. (They only have one special, btw.) The halibut was lackluster, as were the fries. So...a real letdown for us.
Welcome return of Tom Valenti to the Upper West Side. Menu somewhat similar to Ouest, but fewer fancy entrees. Very busy, crowded, convivial, with a beautiful, long bar. Excellent hamburgers, chicken liver mousse. (Haven't sampled anything else.) Please come back to 77th and Broadway, Mr. Valenti!
Well appointed as a local gathering place, fine reception and service, the only problem was the food. Tripe was served as a soup, hamburger was crumbly, croque m. was served under a volcano of cheese and the tarte flambe was a thick pizza. New place, tired cuisine.
The food is lackluster. The burger too well done, the croque monsieur too Mayo-laden and not cooked enough. The ham was cold.
The service, even worse. Could not find a waiter unless they wanted to find you. On the other hand, the liver mousse was perfect.
Yoko Ono was dining there with a table full of people and, perhaps, they were getting all the attention. No one else was.
I just love this place. The food. The people. The service. I plan on staying a regular! Super yum all around.
I’m very glad this restaurant opened in the neighborhood. I’ll definitely go back. We shared the lamb ribs which seemed under seasoned and the meet could have been better. All of our other dishes were very good. It was a Saturday night and we dressed a bit better - no need, people were in jeans. As in every restaurant in nyc, it was very noisy.
Comfort food Attentive staff. Very accommodating. Definitely worth a return visit.
A mixed experience, overall. Staff welcome was warm and we were seated on time. Service was prompt and careful. Food, as expected was very good, although the Brussels sprouts seemed under cooked and the very large lamb chops were hard to cut. Primary complaint is the noise level. We came early and the restaurant was not crowded. As it started to fill up, the increasing noise level made it difficult to hear the person across from me at the table. A very big annoyance: the loud "performance" of "Happy Birthday" at another table (which was not near us), with one person (a waiter?) literally yelling. We could not talk or hear while it was going on and on.
This new place in our neighborhood is much better than the one it replaced! Fairly limited menu, but unusual – and excellent– choices. We will become regulars.
Sorry I can’t write a review, we made our reservation thinking that the restaurant open for lunch, got there and they only open for dinner. Restaurant or maneuver should update their reservation system and not let customers waste their time going there. Thank you. Hopefully next time it’s open.
I invited family for brunch. Our reservation was for 1:30 pm on a Sunday. At 2 pm our waiter announced the kitchen would soon be closing. We had ordered 3 appetizers for the table. Immediately, we felt pressured to order and be rushed. Which we were. The bill was presented- no offer of coffee, etc. The food : for the table: excellent. The meal pedestrian- could not eat the Croque Monsieur:dry, cardboard. It is not inexpensive. The host was not friendly and only involved with personal friends. Will not be returning.
Pedestrian (or worse) relatively pricey. Crispy fried chicken sandwich was not very crispy and mostly dark meat. Oyster soup tasted mainly of bacon with little sea flavor and contained a couple of very soggy oysters. French Onion soup was tasty, but a glutinous mess with barely any onion broth.
Service was overly fast. We were in and out in 65 minutes. Starters were brought within seconds of pre-diinner glass of wine, then mains again within a minute of finishing the starter.
Had been there when Cafe Tallulah occupied the space. The look has been updated, but the food and service vastly improved. Started with Chicken Liver Mousse. Generous portions and absolutely delicious. My wife had the cooked duck and I had the burger. Loved them both. french fries perfect. Bloody Marie excellent. Wait staff very attentive and friendly. Will definitely return.
After water was spilled on one of our diners, her entire meal was comped by the Manager.
Great for customer service.
Food was delicious. Service was very good. Noise level is a little daunting.
Very happy to have this in the neighborhood. Valenti does it again. Food and service were wonderful. Only suggestion would be to expand the menu a bit. Will definitely return.
Great vibe and space. Food is good. Service could improve, as could the hostess who is not friendly on the phone or in person. Will go back for sure since it seems like a good neighborhood place.
Great and fun addition to the uws
Happy that they have finally opened and are listed - Tom Valenti does it again - food is outstanding if limited - exceptional wait staff - clearly they are veterans of other excellent restaurants. Friendly but not overbearing - very much an UWS positive addition. Enough
variety to make repeat visits - must get a reservation - he's got his regulars.
We loved this restaurant. Another great Tom Valenti dining spot. Atmosphere, service and food were terrific. Would definitely recommend. We liked it so much we are going back again this week.
This new place by the esteemed Tom Valenti (Ouest, Cesca) hits the sweet spot; simple, above-the-usual, well-prepared food with moderate (for NYC) prices. It's a nice, mellow, "grown up" atmosphere, moderately noisy but civilized with great service and a pleasant ambience. Great to have on the UWS!!!
We were seated immediately upon arrival, at the time of our reservation. Staff was pleasant and accommodating, respectful of dietary needs. The food was absolutely delicious. Several of us had the tuna in varied forms, all of which were prepared to our requests and well-presented. The 4 of us, who dine together regularly, decided this will be a mainstay of our restaurant rotation.
what a lovely addition to the neighbourhood! Mushroom tart + little gem salad + halibut + apple tart tatin all supreme
Things started to go down hill the moment we arrived. The welcome staff argued over what table we should be shown to and whether we should be seated at all. There were many empty tables for two yet we were directed to a table within3 inches of another couple and one seat on the table was in the main restroom walkway from the busy bar. We asked to move. One welcome staff said yes only to be over ruled by the other. “no can do - it’s booked by a friend of the owner” we were told. No apology. There were still other tables they could have offered us but......they didn’t.
We decided to leave. When we told the welcome staff that we were vacating the table they couldn’t even be bothered to say good bye let alone perhaps persuade us to stay!
We live locally and eat out a lot. Shame they were all so nonchalant about future business.
We popped across the road to Cassis who found us a great table despite no reservations on a busy Friday night. They looked after us and served delicious food. I know where I’ll return to!
very good moderate priced food so different than Quest. Great space, service a little slow but was snow night so wait staff covered more tables than expected and only open 14 days at that point. still highly recommended
Tom Valenti is a NY pro!! Glad he’s back
Delicious meal, excellent service and lively ambiance. Will definitely go back. Valenti has done it again.
We are so happy that chef Tom Valenti has decided to locate just a couple of blocks from our place. Lucky, lucky us! As soon as I saw the tables were set, I made a reservation and we were NOT disappointed, even though the kitchen and wait staff are still getting acclimated to the new space and the weekend was billed as a "soft opening." The gravlax appetizer was divine, and the steak and halibut entrees our table ordered were perfectly prepared. Everyone in the place had a smile. Look forward to many more meals at Oxbow Tavern.
We enjoyed our experience during Oxbow Tavern's soft open, though you would never have known it hadn't officially opened yet. Scene was energetic, service was friendly and impeccable, and our meal was fantastic. Thrilled Tom Valenti is back on the Upper West Side - along with his coq a vin and salmon gravlax. This is already a neighborhood gem.
Love love loved it. Missed Ouest so much. Soooo glad. The food was AMAZING!!!!
Only minimally transformed brasserie look from predecessor Talullah, but boy has the food improved. Two appetizers are standouts, the rock shrimp a d the Aran ic. Amongst mains, the pork goes into the comfort food hall of fame. Lively bar scene, friendly, efficient service, a d a more subdued decibel level make this an overnight upgrade to the UpperWest Side dining scene. And all quite reasonably priced.
Welcome back to a great chef. Need the duck on the menu!!!
