Ovvio Osteria - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
We love ovvio and always take anyone from out of town there and the meal always ends with rave reviews. Last night was live jazz - a wonderful accompaniment to our fabulous meal. The hostess, waiters, and most definitely the talented bartenders are the friendliest people around and always make you feel welcome. Our favorite restaurant!
Our server was amazing - responsive, kind, and efficient.
The food was good, however, I ordered the eggplant parmesan (one of my absolute favs) and got a dish smothered in cheese with not so much eggplant. All the pasta dishes our party had were really good, in particular the shrimp fra diavolo was amazing.
Overall, great for small and large groups. Food is great. However, the service we received was unsatisfactory. We had a table of six and the waiter seemed unfriendly because he was grumpy and trying to rush us. There wasn't a line and the restaurant wasn't full. And careful with asking to separate the check because he got even grumpier. He had a huge frown on his face and said it would take him time. We wrote down the card numbers and exact amount including tax for each card to make it as easy as possible for him (it was only 4 cards). Without us asking, he did admit that the way we broke it down for him made it a lot easier, but he was still unfriendly about it.
Everything about our experience at this restaurant was excellent! The service was outstanding and all the wait staff extremely friendly and accommodating. The noise level was excellent so you could actually have a conversation with your friends at the table! The portion size was perfect and each dish was totally yummy! I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a nice, quiet place to get together and enjoy good food, good wine, and good conversation!
Manager was great the staff was not. I had to ask for bread and the wait time at the table was not fair. Other people and tables were getting service and not my table. The manager a lady with blonde hair with a blue shirt she made up for the lack of her employees. I have a groupon that I haven used for that place. I do not know if its worth going back.
Bread w/olive oil & bv for dipping delicious; calamari appetizer very nice -- both rings and tentacles very tender, though could have been a bit crispier on outside; eggplant parmegiana looked unappetizing (like a dead multi-colored jellyfish) but was very good, per my friend; my veal roulade was delicious, though a smidge overcooked. The young man who was our waiter was terrific. Hostess very welcoming, but must learn not to say "you guys". Restaurants MUST train their staff to just say, "How are you doing this evening?" or "Do you have any questions?" Full stop, no "guys" needed. We would so appreciate it!
We have eaten at Ovvio Osteria several times. Although the food is a little pricey, it is prepared fresh and uses few if any pre-packaged ingredients. For that reason, it is not salty and the flavors really shine through. Having said that, we were disappointed in the service. We were initially seated at a table in direct sunlight. There was a filtering shade but the setting sun was still in my eyes. We asked to move which they graciously accommodated. The calamari appetizer was supposed to marinated but it just tasted like olive oil to us plus it was deep fried. One of us had the tuna special which was quite good. I ordered the Pappardelle Clams but got Pappardelle Bolognese. I got to watch my companion eat dinner while that was corrected. When I got the bill it only had one round of drinks on it. Since I would point it out if we were charged too much, I pointed out that the second round of drinks was not on the bill. I thought maybe we were being comped the second round because of the mix-up with my meal. But, the second round was promptly added to the bill. The hostess did not ask how our meal was as we left. If she had, I would have told her. All in all, a very unsatisfying experience.
One of my "go to's"
Have been several times, but most recently my first visit on a weekend at brunch-time. A good selection of salads, brunch-type dishes (with an Italian flare), really cheap mimosas and bloody's (if you're into that). The potato cakes (like hash browns, but not as fried) were wonderful. And next time I am getting the breakfast calzone (egg, taleggio cheese, pancetta, italian sausage, tomato sauce). Also a small selection of pastas available as a second course, if you need it (or to have with an aforementioned salad). This has to be one of the best-values in this "really getting busy" area of Merrifield close to Dunn Loring Metro (and yes, you can walk from the Metro to Ovvio).
I had been here before and had a good experience, so was excited to bring my husband. The food this time around was lackluster to say the least. My husband ordered the pan seared branzino, and sent it right back due to the strong fishy odor and taste. The waiter offered to take that off the bill and ordered up a pizza to go. I love the atmosphere and think there is alot of potential, but the food didn't measure up.
Some of us enjoyed a very tasty meal (e.g. my bronzino dish with delicious accompaniments), but one of our group had a salmon and fusilli (I think) meal that must have used salmon that was past its prime and inedible. In defense of the restaurant, the price of this meal was taken off the bill, but the diner remained hungry. The lasagne was quite good, as was the pizza.
We appreciated the variety of the brunch menu, as well as the reasonably priced Mimosas and Bloody Marys. The food was very good, although the biscuits were too crumbly to spread anything on them (although they were probably fine for a base for the sausage gravy.) The eggs were cooked exactly to our specifications. The sausage was tasty and the bacon was crisp.
We'd been to this restaurant previously but were quite disappointed by this visit. The food was fine but the service was terrible. First, the waiter insisted the Fusilli that was delivered to us was indeed fusilli in spite of us showing him a picture and definition of fusilli, i.e., corkscrew pasta. The waiter kept disappearing for extended periods of time, didn't seem interested in taking our drink orders nor did he ever ask if we wanted additional drinks. We had to walk up to the kitchen door to ask for a check. Don't think we'll return to this establishment.
Would recommend for food, etc. But the night we went it didn't appear the AC was working. It was one of the hotter days we've had and it was VERY hot in the dining room. My friend and I happened to be sitting near the thermostat which was registering 83 degrees. It took away from the evening.
AMAZING. This place, the staff, the FOOD, oh my goodness, the FOOD....it's all incredible and I will be going back again and again.
I suppose I should give you more details: two friends and I went there as a girl's night to catch up on life. We each order a different entree and then shared them: BBQ chicken calzone, chicken marsala, and pasta with vodka sauce and garlic shrimp. We ended with sorbets and gelatos and everything was delicious. Our waiter was also fantastic: accommodating, polite, funny, and kind.
