Oveja Negra Ratings and Reviews
Oveja Negara was difficult to find and has very little signage. I went with my wife and 6 year old son. My son ordered from the child’s menu and we ordered several plates. After $177, out appetites were not satisfied. The food was very good, but not excellent. In general, over-priced for Tapas.
Good tapas spot with a unique yet limited variety of menu items. Part of the restaurant was rented out for a wedding reception so it felt small and outdoor seating was subsequently unavailable. We enjoyed the tastes and varieties of our order but found the prices high for the portions. Wouldn’t go out of my way to come back but a good spot to share tastes with friends before a show or after shopping verses being a date spot
food was good, the overall feeling was cold. The walls need decor and not stark white. The white chairs don't go with the Spanish theme and were a bit awkward with the curved backing. I will definitely give this place another chance as the food was very enjoyable.
The restaurant looks good but the service and food were disappointing. The waiters seemed disheveled and forgot to bring us a few items. The food wasn't good and not worth the price. In fact the fish was old and smelled bad...I ate a piece of it and got extremely sick in about 4 hours. I would suggest that you go elsewhere for a quality time. They need to reevaluate their bussiness!
We had high expectations for this restaurant, since it's located within the Hotel Valencia. Although we went early, the place was empty. Not a good sign. The food was very expensive and did not deliver. The tapas we ordered were lukewarm at best, and lacked flavor. The drinks and bartender were good. It's a fun place to have a drink, but I would go elsewhere for a good tapas meal.
Overall the everything was very good, just a bit pricey for the portion sizes. Everything is too share and the size of each dish was enough to do so for a party of 4., but just so. For the price of each dish, it put the value on the just ok side. With that said, everything was well cooked, presented well and well seasoned. Service was good, just about the right amount of attentiveness, except it was odd that the dishes came out in uneven pace where some items we would wait and some would come out faster. For example: We asked that the salad dish be served first while we waited for a friend, but it came out after the house special even though we order the rest of the dishes (including the house special) after our friend arrived.
Very limited choices on menu. Most dishes sounded creative but we didn't think the creativity was good combinations of ingredients. The signature barbacoa was the best among the 4 items we ordered but nothing to write home about. CAMARONES A LA DIABLA SOPES was like fusion Mexican food. There was only one prawn with a handful of little shrimps. It tasted ok but we expected better at the price of $22. We wanted to try BLACK SESAME SPÄTZLE but we were told they were out after waiting for a long time. We had the heirloom tomato salad instead. There were slices of tomatoes (about one medium size) and peaches (about half of a large peach), few sticks of jicama, few pieces of fig (about a small fig), few dollops of mozzarella mixture, and a few tiny chopped candied ginger. Presentation was not impressive and we could not say it was delicious. After that we decided not to order anything else but dessert because we were disappointed with all the above dishes and nothing else on the menu looked good to us. We shared the hazelnut passion fruit tart. We were thinking fruit tarts from bakeries. It was not even close. I can't explain it but we got a slice of rectangular shaped something... with one stroke of passion fruit creme on the plate and something else which I don't remember what was on the plate. The slice of rectangular shaped thing (possibly made with hazelnut nut combined with other ingredients) was so hard. We literally had to dig our forks in and pry to break it apart. Passion fruit was puree with something to get the creme form and was extremely tart!!! So we misunderstood the passion fruit tart as a fruit tart. It means "tart" = "sour". And we only tasted passion fruit in this one tiny stroke of sour creme. The server came by to make sure we liked the dessert. When I demonstrated how hard it was to break it apart, he apologized and took the dessert out of our bill. That was good service I say. All in all, with limited choice and not tasty food, we won't go back!
Really interesting and tasty food combinations! A nice spot for a quiet date night. It's off the main street of Santana Row in the hotel so definitely a quieter ambiance. The outdoor patio is lovely and the inside is very chic.
We all enjoyed the food (which had very unusual combinations of ingredients) and thought it was very tasty. The 4 of us ordered 6 small dishes although we found 5 dishes would've been enough. We did however have enough room for their yummy chocolate dessert and last but not least our server Richard was very attentive and personable, making our evening more memorable. Also a shout out to Sasha, who never let out water glasses go dry.
Oveja Negra is a great place! The food was awesome and we really enjoyed the evening. The final bill came out less than we expected, which is always a nice surprise. I'd recommend this place to anyone who likes to try new dishes rather than the same old, same old. Very creative and delicious.
We got our drinks and waited 40 minutes before we gave up on the food. Our waiter was very apologetic and we met with the manager. We watched several tables get food. When we gave up we had finished our cocktails and no one had come by.
The worst part was this was our Anniversary and this event marred our enjoyment.
The food was creative in an amazing courtyard setting. Fortunately I had great company as the service was terribly slow. 2 hours for delivery of 4 Tapas/Small Plates on a slow Friday evening doesn't cut it. The server and manager comped a free round but please step up your game.
My boyfriend and I really liked the ambience.. it was quiet but not tooooo quiet. Just quiet enough to wear you can hear each other talk but still have a private conversation. We LOVED the Thai basil fried rice.. so good! We both ordered the New York steak which was very flavorful and a good full sized portion. The smores dessert was the bomb too!! I recommend the rosemary cocktail it was super refreshing.
Very good flavors, portions are good to share between 2, not more and you would need around 4 to feel fully fed. The surroundings did not inspire for a romantic first date, was good for a friends get together. The food was especially tasty, could feel pricey though if you are hungry!
Always want to try something new - - the risk is the food will not be satisfying. The waiter was very helpful and steered us through the menu. The food was extremely disappointing. The shrimp dish had a total of 2 overcooked (burnt) whole shrimp - not enough & very poor tasting. The cauliflower dish was dry and tasteless - it needed a nice dip or topping. The lobster enchilada is a great idea poorly executed - get rid of the shell and simply stuff the lobster in the darn enchilada (also overcooked & dry). Blackened brussel sprouts need to be cooked through - these were hard and overly chewy like tough leather (even though we asked to have them softened). The server was great, but we will not return.
Place was almost empty. Cauliflower pakora made instead with broccoli. Baked cheese appetizer with grilled cheese on top but the bottom had still cold unmelted cheese. The special of the house was barbacoa. Nice presentation and sauce was good but the meat was 1/3 a blob of fat. Also the day she is for sharing for two and you only get 2 tortillas. We asked for extra tortillas which came 10min later. The shrimp sol had only 2 shrimp. To make up for your he food mistakes we were offered a free desert. 30 minutes later they forgot about the dessert
At least the wine was good so they must know how to store the wine.
Clearly not coming back. Waste of $100
Place is empty and pretentious so maybe it is OK for a business dinner where you want lo talk not just entertain
Some dishes are way better than others. The lobster enchilada and the Kampacha Kitfo were outstanding. The popcorn chicken is really a novelty - lots of popcorn, a little skimpy on the chicken. The S'mores desert is to die for! Service was outstanding and the location in Santana Row is perfect.
This was one of the best restaurants in the San Jose/Santa Clara County I have ever been to. Each dish was unique and delicious, all within a moderate price. The ambience and overall atmosphere was comfortable and welcoming. The service was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. I am very impressed and will definitely come back the next time I'm in town.
