Ôter is a contemporary French restaurant based in Melbourne’s CBD run by Tom Hunter, Kate and Mykal Bartholomew along with leading chef, Frenchman Flo Gerardin.

The word ôter means “to remove” or “take off” and represents the dining and interior concept behind the restaurant. Gerardin focuses on French classics but distilled to their core ingredients, drawing on his passion and obsession for Japan’s culinary culture. Diners will notice a paired back atmosphere, with all the unnecessary removed.

While online reservations are recommended, there will be limited spaces available for spontaneous diners. An additional bar is open for cocktails and freshly shucked oysters.

    Tom was exceptional and made our night with fantastic wine recommendations to suit the plates we ordered.

    The wait staff were very attentive, particularly at the beginning but were very keen to take plates away and say farewell by the end. The menu was varied with new dishes on offer and we tried a variety of these, most of which were delicious; the prawns and crab in particular. Unfortunately the front door of the restaurant was kept open and it was freezing so we dined in our coats and didn't really relax as you would hope to during dinner.

    We were seated at the counter and could see the food being prepared in the kitchen, we found the food very inventive and of excellent quality. Wine list although small was very interesting and cocktails were excellent. We found the service did not quiet match the quality of the food

    Dinner was amazing. The pork neck was ok and a bit rare but the rest of the meal was great. My biggest concern was watching the chef put something back in the oven after it fell on the floor. Management was notified. I pittied the poor person who was going to get the meal from the floor. I don't think I'll be back if chefs are that blaze about their food and their standards. I do t think it doesn't bode well for future trading Such a shame as the meal was highly recommendable..... till then

    Amazing service. Food ...INCREDIBLE. We sat at the Kitchen bar and were thoroughly entertained by the cooks and their skill and confidence. My friend and I had the 2 meals we ordered to share individually plated .Felt we were treated like VIP. Wonderful night and because the food and service were so good I was happy to pay more than I usually would for a meal.

    We had the chef tasting menu and we were blown away. Great quality food, surprising choices, and excellent service from both the waiter and the chef. We loved the open kitchen in front of you. While not a low-cost dinner, it was much better value than similar or lower quality venues we have visited in the past. Absolutely loved the Alfonsino, the Eggplant, and the Kangaroo. Definitely a must visit and I have a feeling we will be back. My one suggestion is wine pairing please :)

    We really enjoyed all the meals we chose and the chef was great. We sat at the chefs table which was fun to see what was going on in the kitchen.

    I had one of the best lunches of an extensive career in lunching here in late 2016 - amazing food, wine and service - and decided to book for dinner for my 40th. Unfortunately the date coincided with the worlds 50 best event. The food was fine if not extraordinary, this may be to do with the safe/easy choices that come with the set for a group, however service was frankly terrible. Plates were dropped on the table or passed down from the end. It was hard to get anyone's attention etc.
