The food is great quality and well thought out and executed Vietnamese cuisine . The service staff is friendly . Helpful and efficient . The room is well designed clean but a bit sparse . Not a date or romantic spot .. good for drop in casual .. quick business
The food was great, particularly the transparent noodles with crab. Service was OK, matter-of-fact, not particularly friendly.
However, I have one complaint that I have made over and over ever since you opened. It is the reason I don't come that often, despite the great food. It's the NOISE!!!! The acoustics are terrible. It is impossible to have a conversation without yelling, so everyone has to yell, thus compounding the noise problem. Please fix this problem and you will see a lot more of me and my friends.
I eat here 3-4 times a week because I work in the area - I just can’t get enough! The food is ahhhhhmazzzing and I can’t bring myself to eat anywhere else when lunchtime rolls around! I make it a “working lunch” so I don’t feel so guilty about how many times I eat there per week!
Been going for years and the pho, steak, and five spice chicken were excellent as always. The imperial rolls are a must order. The service had slipped a bit, not attentive. Loud as usual, but fun to watch the dishes come out of the open kitchen. If u don't make a reservation there is service at the counter.
I've been coming to OTD since it opened and although it performs consistently the dishes it serves, there is very little variation and innovation in the menu. In order to keep locals regularly coming in, they need to introduce new dishes to avoid becoming boring.
OTD served the best Vietnamese food I have had since visiting Vietnam 5 yrs ago. The casual vibe, healthy food, creative menu, with healthy takes on classic Vietnamese dishes ---I had to buy a cookbook before leaving. Our waiter was friendly and made great suggestions. I started with a wheat beer from Iceland----a perfect complement to the Asian fare and a lot better than 33 or Tiger that I get in other Vietnamese restaurants.
We shared a Dungeness crab with cellophane noodles, a slaw salad with grapefruit, chicken in clay pot, and spring rolls. All were superb. We had several great meals in SF while visiting this week---this was the best.
I don't see how slanted door could be better---but will need to check that out next trip!!
Had an excellent lunch so wanted to try dinner with friends. We came in hungry and ordered several dishes to share including the Shaking beef ($38). Waiter said beef could only be cooked rare - just the way we like it. It came our medium well. When we told the waiter he apologized and then walked away. Really makes you wonder why they bother asking? Other dishes were good - but pretty small portions. We didn't have any drinks, left a tip of 18+% and total tab for three was $174! Food was good but not great. The over cooked beef was probably the real deal killer. No plans to go back. For that price we can get a stellar meal elsewhere. Was hoping for much better.
I have been coming to Out the Door and Slanted Door at the Ferry Plaza location, and they are one of my favorite restaurants. Because I have been coming for so many years, I would like to see a few more options on the OTD menu; it has remained the same for many years with little variation. Alas, like so many restaurant and entertainment options in San Francisco, the prices have climbed.
