OTD (aka Out the Door - Bush St.) Ratings and Reviews
Our Girls Night Out dinner was cut short by the rude host on Saturday night. We made a 5:30pm reservation. We were running slightly late & received a call from the restaurant at 5:42. I figured they were just checking to see if we were still dining with them. We arrived a few minutes later, only to be told that we were going to have to give up our table by 7:30pm. I've never been told that I would have a table for a limited amount of time when I've made a reservation. The whole evening felt very rushed. By the time we were ready for dessert, we were told that we would only be given 10 minutes. Such appalling dining treatment. Perhaps the restaurant should stop overbooking their evenings. Or maybe they need new management. Will not be returning.
As always everything at OTD was excellent. We usually have crab pasta or prawns but decided to try the chicken in caramel sauce - so tender and delicious! The tri-colored cauliflower was spicy and tasty. Also appreciated the expanded dessert menu. The ginger cake was fantastic!
We had a terrible experience at OTD today.
We arrived early for our reserved table. When seated the waitress arrived fairly soon and when I asked about the ingredients of a dish all she did was repeat the names of what was already on the menu but never described what they were and seemed annoyed that I asked.
In spite of her lack of expertise we ordered our food. We watched as 5 or 6 orders were delivered to diners who arrived after us. We finally got the waitresses attention 1/2 hour after we placed our menu choices and it seemed that our order was simply forgotten. At the time she realized it she told us it would take awhile for our food to be made. We were so discouraged that we decided to leave. Instead of apologizing she exclaimed defensively that it was not her fault . Normally we enjoy OTD very much but this experience really put a damper on our afternoon today .
This place used to be very nice, and it's still fine, but not as special as it used to be. Beneath the white, wood, and glass, there's a slightly tired feeling. I think it's just lacking the love and care and just riding on its rep at this point.
Decor seems like it used to be on point but now is a bit overused. Vibe here used to be a clean, creative aesthetic and now is sort of a place where families take their babies and tables are packed a bit too close together.
Re food: Buns are still great here (and the pancakes were surprisingly good too) the Beignets have been taken off permanently! I asked our waiter about this and his response was that they were too popular and the kitchen couldn't keep up. Now, I don't manage a restaurant but this seems like a profoundly strange approach to me. Rather than take off the most POPULAR food item, I'd have preferred they just hiked up the price until demand fell off a bit...
Service was friendly and attentive enough. Can't fault them for any of the reasons that I probably won't be coming back here as often.
Spring rolls were yummy. We got some filet mignon beef dish that was GROSSLY over salted. It was practically inedible. We tried to give it a chance, but really tasted like somebody had dropped a bucket of salt/seasoning on it. My teeth were making squeaky noise it was so salty.
Dessert was good though! Peanut butter chocolate pie.
Eat there a lot. Slanted Door at 1/3 the prices. Lunch is actually more spectacular than dinner, but both are outstanding. Get a reservation. Lunch menu is different than dinner and both are exceptional. Hate to give this review, makes it harder to get in. Oh well.
Im sorry to say that although the food was quite delicious, the amount of dungeness crab in my dish with cellophane noodles appeared to be only about a tablespoon total. For $20, too much $. My friend had at least 6-7 shrimp w/her rice and it was good-size dish $20+, so I would say not enough crab plus price too high for small portion. Would be better if meal included veggie or salad. Plus no non-dairy desserts as far as I could see. Surprising in an Asian inspired restaurant.
OTD is a secret gem off Fillmore Street. Have been dining at this restaurant for the last 5 years.
Small groups, big groups, the staff can handle it but make sure you book in advance. Great vegetarian options and some great wines to go with the menu. Will keep coming back as long as the food quality remains at the highest level.
OTD and the Slanted Door are my two favorite Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco. BECAUSE, the food is always creative, fresh and truly flavor filled. The Imperial rolls are outstanding as is the marinated chicken, the spring rolls and the steamed buns.
OTD is a true bonus for me since I live near by and can usually get a seat at the bar if all the tables are reserved.
I highly recommend it for lunch or dinner.
The food is good. The service leaves much to be desired. The food is ALWAYS late, especially when you're sitting with a few people. What is the point of eating together if half the people get their food early and other half get their food 10 minutes later? It's simply ridiculous if a kitchen like OTD can't work this right. It happens every time. Also, my tofu and shitake mushroom dish was tasty, but they might as well have called it onion and scallion dish!!! I know onions and scallions are cheap and they make a dish taste better, but c'mon!
OTD continues to be the best Vietnamese food in San Francisco. It offers clean, innovative flavors and great ingredients in each dish, accompanied by good cocktails and wine. It's a trendy setting that attracts 20-40's with a nice communal counter for drinks and overflow dining. Yet it's the food that shines. Best green papaya salad on either coast. We make this our first stop when we come back to SF.
Love, love, love the food here-fresh ingredients, amazing flavors, unique menu-have been here many times and will keep going. Staff is friendly and helpful with the menu. Love sitting at the bar, it is the quietest place in the restaurant. Sitting at the tables can be a bit noisy.
Other than the noise it is a good restaurant. Excellent service. The alacart menu adds up. Such was $30 each with tip, no alcohol. The ingredients are well paired and we liked the glass noodles with crab and the Cajun prawn toss with rice. The gluten free diner had several choices.
I had always wanted to go to Slanted Door, and OTD was in the neighborhood, so I went for lunch. When I saw brussels sprouts on the menu, I stopped looking, because I love brussels sprouts. They were good, but I think I needed a little more. I will go back and order the shrimp dish, which although $20, looked good, and would probably be adequate to fill me up for lunch. I had heard that it was noisy, but it wasn't crowded, and the noise was moderate. My order was filled promptly, and with a smile.
I've been a fan for years and NEVER get tired of dining here. Whether with a group or by myself the food, service and wine never disappoint. Anyone i bring here always enjoys it and returns. Simple good and they treat you well. Food is special fresh and innovative without being trendy. I never miss a chance to come here when I'm in town. Best green papaya salad anywhere
