Osteria Panevino Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant was just OK. The food was a little bland and wasn't particularly special. The service was pretty good, although it was more European style - we had to waive someone down to get the check; our water was not refilled during dinner, even when empty; and at least one item was incorrect. Next time I will look for something in Little Italy instead.
I had the swordfish, which is hard to make authentic Italian but the vegetables felt Italian and made the meal.
Two co-workers ordered lasagna which looked much better. It comes served in its own pan and neither of them could finish.
We sat outside and it was pleasant. While my meal wasn’t amazing, I did want to go back for the lasagna.
Like most of the other reviews the food was very good but the service was the weak link. We were seated promptly our waiter came over shortly thereafter. He started asking about wine and cocktails. We ordered cocktails and he left and we started looking at the menu and the wine list. When he came back with the drinks we asked about the wines. The list is mostly Italian with high priced California wines. He suggested a different wine than the one I had chosen. It was slightly more expensive but not a lot more. He came back apologizing that they were out of that wine but he had chosen a similar wine. He pointed it out on the wine list. Now he had exceeded my budget. I told him no thanks I was just going to stick with cocktails. If you are going to upsell a customer at least be smart enough to have it in stock. His way of doing it made me feel like I was being taken advantage of. I would not return
Came here for lunch during a weekday. We were promptly seated and ordered glasses of white wine. They have a pretty expansive wine list. They had a catch of the day special which was sea bass. So we ordered that and the fish sandwich which was swordfish. Both dishes were excellent. Both fish were perfectly prepared and flaky. Our server was attentive and asked about the meal which I relayed was great. After we were done, I had the double espresso. This made for a very good meal. I would definitely go back as this is a great establishment.
The food, service and overall experience was good, but...
I was hosting a business meal (within financial limits). The waiter did everything he could to aggressively drive up the bill, to the point where I was ready to take it out on his tip if I went over. (fortunately I did not go over; & because of the size of the group, the tip was already included). Aside from this issue, I would recommend the restaurant.
We are fortunate to have been able to book this gem last minute. We sat on the outdoor patio next to the street so we felt like we were on vacation. Our waiter, actually from Rome, was fantastic and always checking on us but never rushed us in any way. The Caesar salad was fantastic as was my sea bass dish over risotto with lobster and sauce, and my friends ravioli with pesto sauce. We have two chocolate desserts that were equally delicious. Nice ambiance, very personable staff and high quality Italian food.
We had dinner here during San Diego Restaurant Week. My wife ordered the sea bass from the special menu but I couldn't pass up the ravioli with lamb in a mushroom sauce. Both dinners were superb, but the highlight was the limoncello cake. Service was excellent, we had an outdoor table, great for people watching.
As I mentioned in my previous reviews I returned to my favorite restaurant in the Gaslamp District and I am glad I did. When I arrived Annalisa their GM greeted me, even though my last vist was last year. I had a nice table for one just inside the front window overlooking the passer-by's as usual.
I was here for the $40 3-course restaurant week dinner special. I started with my usual margarita and wine pairing. The grilled octopus appetizer was hugh and tasted great. It was not rubbery. My short ribs were also tasty, but, too much for me to eat. The lemon cake was also nice. After my meal Annalisa stopped by to say goodbye.
Until next time
Excellent cocktails. The food started out excellent with a shared first course of one of the risotto dishes. The rice was cooked perfectly. After that, the salads were only fair with the mixed greens limp and poorly dressed. The entrees were absolutely enormous and slathered with lobster bisque. I had the fish over risotto and a lobster bisque sauce. My husband had the crab gnocchi. Again, the gnocchi and seafood were over powered by the bisque. Everything tasted good but was gloppy. $42 and $36 respectively.
First the good.....we had six in our party and we sat outside on the patio and that was great for people watching on 5th street. The service was excellent as was the appetizer that was suggested by our waiter (I think he may have been an owner).
Now the not so good.....I think everyone in our party agreed that the food was very average at best. I had the chicken parmigiana and it very below average.
I picked this place because the reviews were very high but our party of six was very disappointed in the food.
