Osteria Mozza Ratings and Reviews
The food was excellent, fresh mozarella was superb. The service on the other hand was pretty abysmal. The first server who gave us our menus disappeared and we sat there waiting to order for almost 30 min. Finally a different waiter came by and took our order. All throughout our meal our water glasses remained empty and there were long pauses between courses. For a restaurant of this caliber I expected more.
Tables for 2 were 4 Inches apart..hence private discussion not possible.
The air was stale with aerosolized grease..hence clothing stank on leaving.
Food was O K, lady sommelier was excellent.
Our waiter was not particularly service oriented.
Surprised that this restaurant received such a high ranking from LA times.
We came here on our 5th anniversary on a recommendation from a foodie friend. We had a delicious meal - the mozzarella bar alone is worth the drive to Hollywood, and the pasta was delightful. We both enjoyed our mains (I had the duck, my wife had the tuna) and the dessert was also delicious. Our server was exceptional - she guided us through the menu and gave us recommendations based on our taste, while still hinting at what her favorites were. We would eagerly come back again!
I had such high expectations for this restaurant and had heard great things! The atmosphere threw me off when we first arrived. It was loud and overly crowded. The noise isn't usually an issue but with the high ceilings of this room, the sound was amplified. The tables are so closely packed together that you have to practically sit on the other table to get to your seat and then shuffle around the tables and waiters to go to the bathroom. Our waitress described the food as being "lovely" and "beautiful" and "fun" when we asked for her recommendations. I'm not sure about you, but I don't know what those words TASTE like. She surely meant well but was not very helpful.
On top of that, the couple next to us decided to have a full blown argument about cheating - dropping the f' bomb and calling each other names. Again, the tables are REALLLLY close, and we felt like we were sitting in on their argument. Needless to say, we lost our appetite for dessert and left early.
I indicated on my open table reservation that this was a birthday dinner. I called the restaurant right after making the reservation to make sure they got the note. I even let the waiter know it was my friend's birthday. They did nothing. Didn't even say happy birthday. Did not acknowledge it at all. We wanted to order burrata first and let them know our order while we were eating it, but our waiter said we couldn't do that. He said we have to put in our entire order at one time and we can't order appetizers first. I wanted to order from pizzeria osteria to go from our waiter, and he said no. He said we have to go there ourselves. In the past, I've ordered pizzeria osteria to go from our waiter and picked up the food from the pizzeria. Since our waiter refused to take the order, I spoke to the hostess and ordered with her. When I went to the pizzeria to pick up my food, they never received th order. I've been to osteria mozza a lot, but this was the worst service I've ever experienced there. I am very disappointed.
The big problem with our dining at Mozza was they put our party of 4 at a table sized for two in the middle of a crowded dining room. We couldn’t get to the center of the table for sharing plates without having the waiter remove our water glasses and bread plates and even then the space was simply too tiny. It was a claustrophobic dining experience for my husbands birthday. Our seating was crowded and the room very noisy. I had requested a quiet table as my husband is hard of hearing when I made the reservation and again when I confirmed. We won’t be back.....
Everything was delicious except our dessert torte was a little burnt. The Buffalata was creamy. The bread was insane with perfect crust. Lamb chops were over the moon. Our table in the side room was romantically lit with a view of the street. I'm a huge Nancy fan - such pleasurable dining experience!
Restaurant has a lovely feel and nice vibe. Our first selection from the Mozzarella Bar was good but bris all. The Oxtail pasta dish was delicious, but the Bologna’s was bland, dry, and not great. The Bass en croute was very fishy and did not taste fresh. We sent it back and replaced it with a grille top, which was good...not great. The Octopus arrived when everyone else had finished their meal. We were rather surprised that there was no effort to comp anything....very surprising and disapppinting. We will not return.
Be honest, we were a bit disappointed. The safe brussels sprouts were at as well as the corn pasta. I would say The squid ink pasta was on sale pretty great. Our main entrée ice fish and although cooked well, it was very fishy. The gelato was amazing. We wanted to love it but didn't.
Food was excellent. You have to order all your food at the same time which is kind of odd since we wanted to order appetizers while we decided what we wanted as a main course, however it did work out because all the courses were delivered in a timely manner one after another. Service with refills on drinks was slow. Would totally go back though. The shaved brussel sprouts might have been my favorite, right up there with the burratta with artichoke.
The service was amazing. The waiter/waitress are engaging and really try to consider what you want and how you want it. The food is amazing as well and definitely fresh. The lighting is a bit dark but at the same time, fitting because despite having people nearby, it feels like they aren't there. Would recommend to others.
I went to Osteria because I get to know about the Chef (Nancy) in a great program in Netflix. I was in LA for some days so I took the chance and even though Nancy was traveling her team took care of the dinning experience. The option of wines & spirits is huge till the point that I just went for my strong knowledge: tequila & mezcal. Not too many in that area though fair options. I ended up asking for a recommendation of red wine which was also fair (from the 1st page). I took the plate that has a red asterisk in the menu & the beef with some greens. Thanks good I was able to have cheese in the salad as it is one of the species in this place. Being lactose intolerant I just needed a small try and it was great. The dessert of olive gelatto is really something everyone should try. So parts might be a little salty although avoidable in the mix of taste.
we were absolutely taken by the ambience, the food, the service and the wine list, a bit noisy at times but one of the best restaurant LA has to offer, with a really unexpected menu items, definitely not like any other Italian restaurant i have been too ...we will be back for some excellent pasta!!!!
Not much vegan food which is why I gave it lower points but the chef was able to make things vegan plus our waitress was very very very good about knowing which things were vegan or had dairy/meat elements so that was appreciated. Overall the service was EXCELLENT. A lot of times in restaurants, the men who bring bread by are very disconnected from the rest of the service staff but everyone at this restaurant from the waitress to the sommelier to the nice gentleman who brought by bread were not only nice but legit animated while speaking with us. It was an incredibly WARM, not stuffy, environment - honestly, THIS is what people will come back for, if not the food.
We had been wanting to come to Osteria Mozza for a while since my wife and I would always pass by it when we drive to the Pantages Theater from the Westside. So when we were planning to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary, I made a reservation to celebrate our evening at Mozza. I had read some Yelp reviews of great food, sometimes not so great service, however our experience was A+ in terms of the food we experienced and the service. We ran around 15 minutes late but we were seated right as soon as we got there. Ok, you do pay $12 for valet but my only pet peeve was we waited for over 15 minutes for our car to come to the alley because the valet guys simply forgot to pick up the car. Otherwise, glad we made it here and looking forward to the next experience!
Osteria Mozza reputation of a great food destination still holds, however, service remains a major disappointment. Unfriendly cold hostess. A pushy waitress that wants to upsell and only upsell, could careless about the customer experience. We enjoyed the food, however, the unpleasant staff experience will not motivate me to go back anytime soon. I don't recommend this place unless a major improvement is done to the way staff treats clients.
