I went to La Spiga with two girlfriends and was underwhelmed to say the least. The ambiance was fairly cute, but the restaurant is pretty large and feels indistinguishable from every other Capitol Hill/SLU restaurant. Our waiter was really sweet and the wine list was fine but that's about it. We ordered a starter with ciabatta that was really dry. It was served with plain olive oil, no seasonings, salt, or vinegar. All three of us ordered different pasta dishes which were over cooked and over sauced. I got the tagolini with braised pork. The meat was fine but the sauce didn't taste particularly fresh. The pasta itself was definitely nothing to write home about. My girlfriend's ordered two different types of gnocchi. Both plates had too much sauce and the gnocchi was a little chewy. We ordered tiramisu for dessert. It had way too much sponge cake and not enough mascarpone cheese, leaving the dessert to taste really dry.
I like the food here and the restaurant is in a beautiful building, with a small outdoor area in the back that is nice in the summer. I like the atmosphere and the live piano music is nice. I have been here with friends several times and we often have odd issues with the service. One persistent annoying practice they have is they try to remove plates and glasses from the table before we are done with them, with food still on the plate and non-empty glasses, and leaving the area before we even realize they took it. This is not good service. Please let us finish!!
This particular visit the server had forgotten a salad and made up an excuse that he thought we wanted it later, even though we mentioned nothing of the sort and he brought other salads to the table before the main course. Instead of blaming it on us, a more appropriate response would have been "sorry, I forgot and will try to get it as soon as possible", which would have been understandable.
Other than those annoying service problems, the staff has been very nice and welcoming and it's a nice place for dinner. I will return and keep one hand on my plate until I'm done.
We'll definitely come back.

Osteria la Spiga never disappoints and they once again made my birthday special. They have a wonderful wine list, but also welcomed the bottle I brought from my personal wine collection. Their menu is delicious for those without dietary requirements, but they also offer vegetarian and vegan options, plus gluten free pasta and breads too. Great for a mixed group of friends or a lovely Italian date for two.

We chose La Spiga for a farewell dinner for our Italian exchange student - service/attitude was poor - food was late, but worse, they made excuses rather than simply apologizing for it. The attitude: we're busy, your food is caught up because of a larger private party (which seemed to take priority), and what we chose took too long to prepare (presumably our fault?!?) Thankfully the manager stepped in at the end of our dinner to try and smooth things over. Sadly it was too late, and we had to leave, although his attempt was appreciated.

This is our go-to date night spot! The prices are very reasonable and the food never disappoints. The pastas are so fresh and delicious!

Our dinner there on Friday evening was right up there with one of the best dining experiences we've had in this city in a LONG time. Our server was not only wonderful, but extremely knowledgeable about the menu, and especially the wine list. He made recommendations, and even had us try a few different wines that he thought we would enjoy. His service was prompt and genuine. We brought someone from the East Coast with us before she flew out and she was thoroughly impressed. Whatever you are doing, please continue it!
I mentioned our anniversary when I made the reservation but they seemed completely unaware of it (server didn't say anything- it would even be nice if the person at the front desk acknowledged it).
Our reservation was at 6:30 and we were on time. Food didn't come until 7:30. Our waitress Heather (who, by the way, was terrific) apologized, saying they had a wedding party upstairs.
Portions are WAY, WAY too small. I ordered butternut squash ravioli and could have had another whole serving and I'm not that big an eater.
Good food but overpriced. If you are ok with the prices, you’ll have a good dinner.
