I appreciated the accommodations as requested for a private setting.
A somewhat limited menu given the expectations I had of the chef.
Amazing food, homemade pasta was awesome! So nice to have Fabio’s cooking in Downers Grove .
Beautiful restaurant, quiet so you could easily have a conversation. The food was delicious. We had meatball with polenta and arancini for appetizers and both were great. The linguini with short rib sogu was wonderful, and a perfect portion size. My husband had the short rib with polenta. The short rib was very tender and a good portion size. It was a wonderful dining experience, will definitely go again.
I am a Fabio Viviani fan so I was pretty disappointed with Osteria. I thought it would be comparable to Sienna Tavern. The food, service, atmosphere were all blah with no pizzaz. There were not many people there for a Saturday night.
The restaurant is part of the Doubletree hotel & it definitely feels like a hotel restaurant. I won't go back.
Food was fantastic! Service was good! It was just a little too dark and quiet for me personally. But if you’re looking to go somewhere romantic then it’s perfect.
I was very excited to try Osteria with my wife. We have been to Fabio’s Sienna Tavern several times. We love the food and ambiance. I felt like this was a miss for us tonight. The restaurant itself is in the Double Tree hotel lobby. For us the ambiance was just not there. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the food selection. We started off with appetizers. We ordered the meatballs and the arancini. The meatballs were a little on the cold side, but the arancini was really good. My wife had the gnocchi and I had the squid ink pasta. Her entree was by far better than mine. I felt the squid ink pasta was just not the greatest. We finished off with the tiramisu which was really good, but a rather small portion. All in all , I really wanted to like Fabio’s restaurant, but it just missed the mark. I’d like to say I would give it another try, but I don’t think we will. Sienna Tavern was a knockout, Osteria was just a miss for us.
We had a wonderful evening at Osteria. The service, food and ambiance were all incredible. We will return soon.
Was the first time we visited Osteria Was a great experience Great service great food great desert and we love the decor We will definitely be back in the near future
Disappointed by the service
The food was just OK and service was fair at best. The table we were sat at was next to a noisy group yet there were no other tables occupied in the bar area. Was not bad just would not do it again.
Went for an early lunch on a Saturday. One person was working the entire restaurant and bar. She was lovely and tried her best but we left after 20 min. We were the only people in the entire place.
I rarely write negative critical reviews, but I was so underwhelmed at our experience that I feel I must write one this time.
We chose this restaurant because of Chef Fabio Viviani and because of the good reviews the restaurant received in the local papers. The restaurant is located in the DoubleTree hotel. Although the restaurant is attractively decorated, especially the rich romantic floral wallpaper, it is situated directly across from the hotel bar. The night we went for dinner was for a birthday celebration and we braved a winter storm to keep the event. Perhaps the bar was noisy because the guests were making merry to pass away the time. Service should not have been a problem because the restaurant was sparsely populated, again the storm may have played a part in that. Our server was polite and pleasant, however service was slow. The same server we had was also waiting on individuals in the bar, and this might account for the slower service. One of the specialty cocktails ordered were not prepared correctly and was overly sweet. We brought our wine so I cannot comment on the wines. The meatball appetizer was not juicy and under seasoned. The calamari came with zucchini strips, and these were oily. The dish had a hot giardinara sprinkled over the calamari, which I feel masks the flavor of the fish. The braised beef rib was under seasoned - it did not have the rich savory flavor expected of a braised dish, and the beef was actually rather tough and somewhat stringy. The NY strip was just plain tough. The fettuccine with short rib ragu was also under seasoned although the pasta was cooked al dente. In fairness the hostess took off the NY strip and the one drink which she tasted and agreed was not made correctly. A complimentary limoncello cake was served, and this was delicious, moist sponge with a nice lemony filling and frosting. I only wish I could say the same for the rest of the meal.
Parking was terrible. Can only valet. We were seated promptly but it took a little long to be seen by our server. Had to ask for water to be brought to the table. Overall the food was amazing! Once the server took our order the service was prompt. I had a reward through OpenTable and I initiated the reservation using the link from the reward but was told after the fact that they weren’t set up to redeem the reward. That was a little disappointing.
The food was average at best. As an opener, I don’t know how you can offer only four small pieces of bread to a table (and dipping oil) at an Italian restaurant. Aside from that, the staff kept wanting to take it away! The calamari was dry and gummy, no dipping sauce was provided. I ordered the Rigatoni which was way undercooked. Overall this was a huge disappointment for a well known name attached to it.
Highly recommended. Great food, service & ambience. Looking forward to going back again to try other dishes.
The bread was good. Other than that, just okay.
The room and ambiance was beautiful but the food was just satisfactory. I ordered the rigatoni with bolognese and the pear salad. But neither one of the dish were memorable in flavors or presentation.
The lamb shank and Italian sausage and gnocchi were both delicious!! The roasted garlic and olive oil that they serve with the bread was so good!!! The service was excellent!1 The manager came to our table 3 times to make sure we were enjoying our dinner. We will definitely be dining there again and we are telling all of our friends about Osteria.
Let me start off by saying that I rarely write reviews.
However, in this instance, I will have to say that this was one incredible visit.
The Service: 10 Stars
I would love to give our server Erik extremely high praise for the phenomenal service he provided to us last night in celebration of my girlfriend's birthday. He truly went above and beyond to ensure everything went smoothly. We had a slight issue with my order, but Erik ensured the item was fixed and that our meal was to our satisfaction.
The Food: 10 Stars as well!
The Filet Mignon was cooked to perfection. It had the perfect crust and a mouthwatering flavor. I will have to say, that the star of the show was the Gnocchi. Chef Fabio knows his Gnocchi and thank you Executive Chef Daniel for executing Chef Fabio's menu to perfection.
Desserts: 10 Stars
I went with Erik's recommendation of the Tiramisu - which was perfectly light and not overpowered by the coffee flavor. Yet, that Limoncello Cake, perfect combination of sweetness to the light and airy cake. Perfectly executed as well.
Yes, I would recommend this restaurant to everyone that loves great food. We will be coming back very soon as well!
Thank you Chef Fabio for putting together an incredible team and thank you Chef Daniel and Erik for executing a perfect evening. See you soon.
I would recommend Osteria with certain conditions. Even though our first visit was less than convivial, Osteria deserves another visit since it is a relatively new restaurant. We certainly hope it becomes successful as it's close to home and a very pleasant room. Service needs a lot of work.
Our waitress Rosa was amazing!! We will absolutely go back!
Service was poor, they took a long time between each check in with the table. Worst of all, we were served dinner without our second round of drinks we ordered. Pasta portions were small. I will not be going back.
We love Fabio but this evening was kind of a hit and miss. There weren’t that many people in there but it was extremely loud and we had to yell to talk to our friends that joined was. We ordered drinks from the bar and it took at least 30 minutes to get them. The server kept apologizing for the wait and said the bar was busy. When we finally got them, my friend and I had the raspberry lemoncello Moscow mule and neither of us thought it was all that wonderful and that they left out the alcohol part. Chopped salad was good.. big enough to feed 4. Arancini appetizer was ok not what I usually know them to be like but fine. The chicken Marsala was good. Different than some but very tasty. The fettuccine with short ribs was good with a hint of spice My other friend ordered the gnocchi stuffed with cheese and sausage and it was horrible. Just like a gummy paste. I tasted it and agreed. It was bad and super salty She couldn’t eat it. We had lemoncello cake and gelato and a bombolini donut dessert. Those were all just fair. Wouldn’t get those again . The atmosphere wasn’t bad but it was really loud. Two out of the three types of main courses were good. I guess I would try it once and give it a shot .
Warm welcoming service from start to finish. Food arrived promptly and was very good. The limoncello cake was a star.
My wife and I along with another couple had dinner at Osteria on 1/18/20. We made a reservation for 5:00pm and were promptly seated and our waiter took our drink order. After drinks were served, he guided us through the menu and answered any questions that we had. Food came out and was very tasty. The waiter was there whenever we needed a refill on our drinks. The manager stopped by to see how everything was. After dinner and before dessert, the head chef stopped by to chat and asked us how we enjoyed the food. We will definitely be going back again in the future.
Good but not memorable. My colleague ordered the squid ink pasta which was very good
Fantastic! Great service and food
The menu was very limited but the food we had, octopus, mushroom pizza and chopped salad were all excellent. The staff was fantastic.
This is a hidden gem. I'm from the area and didn't realize this great restaurant was so close. A friend told me about it and it showed up on OpenTable so I booked it.
The service was amazing. From the staff that greeted us to the servers that ensured we had everything we needed, it was apparent that customer service is top priority at this restaurant. It didn't stop at getting our orders placed. The executive chef not only came out to ensure my allergies were personally addressed but I found out that he made sure he was scheduled for the day of my visit because he saw all my allergies on the reservation. I didn't forget the food. I had the burger and I think it's the best one I've ever had. Good food with bad service doesn't create restaurant loyalty. You need both to succeed and this place takes that seriously.
Thank you to the entire team at Osteria by Fabio Viviani. My first visit was very memorable and I will be back soon with more friends. Thank you to OpenTable for making my allergies much less of an issue by allowing me to keep them in my profile and to ensure I'm safe while eating out with family and friends.
We were very excited to try this restaurant but unfortunately our experience fell short of our expectations. Our service was slow and we were often wondering where your server went. One member of our group asked for things on 2 occasions and our server stated he could get them but never returned with the items. Two in our group got the NYE set menu..service was slow between each course and we had to ask for each course...the pasta dish in that menu was not cooked properly. Others in our group ordered off the menu and some items were cold. A manager stopped (not by our request) to check on our table and looked annoyed with our feedback and did nothing to improve our experience. Unfortunately, this experience was disappointing.
I wore my “Top Chef” Fabio Viviani shirt proudly that my boys brought me years ago and I was a little upset that Fabio wasn’t there to take a picture with us 😊 We will be telling all of our friends and family what a wonderful date night we had. Thank you so much for such great service. We will be back 😊
John provided excellent service. Plates came out hot but food on plate was lukewarm.
Wonderful. Thank you for a great meal with happy servers. We will return.
Food took to long not to be hot. Server was pleasant, but slow. Prices did not line up with quality or service level.
We enjoyed our first experience very much, however we thought it was pricey for the amount of food served. The wine was also pricey! Given that the restaurant is inside a hotel, I think they should not expect top dollar for their menu.
First of all the food at Osteria is outstanding. We were a party of six and every single dish we tasted was amazing. The salads were fresh and tasty. The octopus was out of this world. Pastas were all great. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive and very sweet. However, I would have to echo the other reviews that said the ambiance left a lot to be desired. The decor was cold and boring and not in a cool minimalist way. I would recommend tablecloths, candles something to warm the place up. Also, curtaining the dining room off from the hotel lobby bar and the TVs would go a long way. Please correct these minor problems as we would love to have this wonderful Italian restaurant succeed in Western suburbs.
Food was very good. The ambiance leaves a bit to be desired.
First of all, the food and service was very good. There was not any ambiance though. The lights in the dining room were very bright, while the corners of the room were poorly lit. If the lighting were more balanced I feel it would have helped. The place was almost empty despite Open Table indicating that we got the last Open Table reservation. There weren't any table cloths and for the prices I think that would have helped. It just seemed like a place that would just serve breakfast and lunch, a diner like place. Not a place with $35 entree's.
It was a birthday celebration and we were drawn by Fabio's reputation. Have been to a few of his other restaurants and haven't been disappointed. This meal was okay but not one of the best experiences we've had. Service and our server were great. Food was okay but not consistent. The salmon was great. The pasta was so-so. Appetizers were okay as well. Had to search for the carpaccio on the plate.
Since this is a hotel, parking is tough. They need a valet. I attribute this to growing pains but it's going to be awhile before we head back.
