We love this place! The food is delicious and you get a lot of it, so it's great to get a meal and some leftovers for tomorrow's lunch. The drinks are pretty good too. I would say the weak point is the service. They gave us water glasses and didn't refill them until we were almost done with the meal. We went long stretches without the waitress checking in on us, I would've liked another drink but didn't get a chance to order one. Definitely a good place if you want a long, leisurely meal and aren't shy about flagging someone down when you need something, but if you're planning to catch a movie and want quick, attentive service, this isn't the place for it.
This is not our first time visiting this place. This time the guy who did for us the show did without any enthusiasm and it's felt like he want to finish quickly and go to the next table. We were a party of 10 with kids and usually it it much more fun.
We like this neighborhood restaurant for casual weeknight dinners because we usually sit on the "sushi side". For a change, and because we had young guests, we tried the "hibachi side". This was a mistake. Service was poor and inattentive, food was mediocre, and several inconsiderately loud groups made conversation practically impossible. I've endorsed this restaurant in previous reviews, and will give them another chance (only on the sushi side), but the last experience was expensive and most disappointing.
The location and atmosphere of the restaurant seemed nice, but the service and quality of the food was very poor. The food had a lot of garlic for seasoning, the chef did not cut up the food, and many other things.
very loud and rushed and not particularly attentive service.
Excellent food and fun atmosphere as always. My daughter loves coming here. They give balloons to thw birthday kids when you let them know you’re celebrating. This timw they took the cake to the back amd cut it for us. In the past we’ve had to do it at the table. That was a nice surprise.
Went for Father’s Day. Food was good, but a little pricey for hibachi. We tried some different sushi and sashimi. Some was good, some we didn’t like. I felt there wasn’t enough variety of sushi to choose from. Although the waitress service was good, the chef who cooked rushed through the ‘entertainment’ part of the cooking. I think he cooked for about 10 minutes. The kids love going for the show they put on while they cook. So that part was disappointing. The filet melted in your mouth! We all got shrimp but we didn’t get much of it and I don’t think it was cooked all the way. Probably won’t be back.
First time visit. It was WELL worth it. The chefs were great, food even better! They offer up decent size portions too so if you normally don't finish your food, you can take some with you!
The staff was very helpful and accommodating. They made my friends birthday extra special. The food was excellent and the chefs are really friendly and entertaining. Overall a great experience would recommend to all my friends and family !
Delicious fresh food and always a fun experience at the hibachi tables!
The service was unbelievable. We were not eating during peak hours but for real they delivered the food very fast
We had some good cocktails as well
We waited an hour for our 7:30 reservation, and then another hour for sushi to arrive. They took $40 off the bill, but I wouldn't return.
The food was amazing. We just felt like we were being rushed out the restaurant. The employees kept coming in constantly & it made us feel like they wanted us to get out. Otherwise it was good.
Went for a birthday. Great Hibachi and always an amazing time. From a small dinner for 2, to a 12 person birthday. Osaka never fails to impress. 5 Stars!!!
Their TOMO sushi is my favorite of ANY sushi place in town!
Went for a birthday and had an AWESOME time! Osaka staff were extremely accommodating of us increasing the size of our party the day before and gave us a private room without asking (our party was 13 people).
Food was delicious and portions plentiful. We chose the hibachi option. Chef could have been a little more interactive and creative—other tables were having a different experience. Checked off birthday when we made reservation but no mention—why is the question asked? Overall a good experience and probably will return.
Great time, good food! Downside was that the drinks didn't really feel like they had any alcohol in them and it was a little expensive but a really nice time! Loved the karaoke in the basement too.
Overall was not satisfied
Great food and energy. We had to ask multiple waiters a total of 3 times to get a soda for one of my friends.
Good enough, but not worth ordering again. That was our response both to the fried oysters main dish and the assorted maki in their combo platter. The latter was distinctive for featuring chopped fish mixtures rather than straight raw fish - very odd. Overall a reasonable place to grab a meal, but mediocre at best.
I love this place. Eat here all the time. Be back soon
We were sat in a private room with 2 hibachi grills for 24 ppl
No one came in for 15 mire minutes at all. No one asked for drink orders. Finally, a not very nice man took orders fir hibachi but still no drink orders or any other service. The 2 notpersonable hibachi cooks came in, one was nice one was bordering on rude. They cooked and left, still no waiter attention at all. My husband finally asked someone outside the room to clear plates. No desserts were offered. My husband had to go find someone again for the bill and wait.
When we all went down to the karaoke bar the bartenderess attempted to confiscate our sons driver license and his classmates also. They are both OVER 21. She was rude and offensive. We left VERY disappointed and will not go back. The ONLY NICE person was the woman at the maitre ‘d stand. There was a man helping who was very abrupt and rude, annoyed whatever!! Very very sad after looking forward to spending time with our son ( a jr at Boston College) and 11 of his great classmates, all of legal ages by the way!
If you're looking for a fun dining experience in Coolidge Corner, Osaka is the place to go. Especially lively with a younger crowd on Friday and Saturday nights. Great for birthdays or other similar celebrations.
Great restaurant, good drinks and the cooks are very entertaining! Restaurant was clean and they have karaoke!
Angry unhelpful waitress, soggy food, very expensive.
At first everything was ok. Once we were sat at the hibachi area we notice that our plates and utensils were dirty. Waitress collected menus and placed them on the grill that they were going to cook on. Grill was very dirty. We ask to be switch to the seated restaurant area in hopes that it'd be better but we were denied. Manager snatched plates and utensils away and replaced them with another ser of greasy dirty ones. We left before eating.
I dont think Ive ever been disregarded as much in a restaurant, from checking in at the hostess stand, to the chef at the hibachi grill. Lousy service particularly from Martin, our waiter. Definitely not going back.
We had a mixed group of people who were having the hibachi meal and a couple of us who ordered sushi.
It was good to have the option of both. The sushi was excellent, the hibachi meals were quite large, but those who went down that road remarked that they thought a little too much garlic and oil were used.
Our reservation was at 8:30 and we were seated at 9:15. Noise level was extremely high. Chef made our food in 5 minutes, without salt, pepper, or garlic. Taste was far from enjoyable. We were rushed to leave.
I had called the restaurant ahead of time to say that this was for a surprise birthday. Myself and the birthday guest arrived last after our friends to have everyone surprise him. Well the surprise was ruined because the restaurant would not seat them so the surprise didn’t really happen the way we had planned. The hostess was great, but everyone else we interacted with was not the best. Our server was nowhere to be found when we wanted more drinks. Also, when I asked the hibachi chef to do “sake” for the birthday boy he said no.
Busy restaurant good selection of hibachi and sushi. Good quality seafood tuna was very good. I felt rushed after Hibachi asked to leave seating. Understandable because others waiting but not appreciated . Would come again but not during a busy time
Things started smoothly. We sat at the hibachi right away ordered and then got our salad. However another group arrived and got seated at the grill. We waited for 40 minutes between when the salad came and the chef arrived to cook. I understand getting more people on a table but at that point the new group should have been at another grill. They even apologized to us as it was clearly two groups at different times of a meal
They were kind of short staffed it seemed. Waited 25 mins for our drink. The Hibachi Chef seemed rushed like he didn’t want to be there.
We came on Boston Restaurant weekend. The food was ok but the service was very very very awful!! She didn’t say hello, thank you or even say yes when we asked for something. So rude!!! We won’t come back there again.
I would go again- and the restaurant week deal was a great deal- but Osaka was subpar as far as operations go. We had a reservation but weren't seated until nearly an hour later. We were advised to wait at the bar downstairs (which was rather obnoxious- I'm in my 20s yet it felt like an overly young crowd and they were actually screeching). Once we were finally seated there was still a bit of a wait until the server and chef came to the hibachi table. The food itself was amazing but the clearly need to prepare better for large influx of crowds. I would go back but if on a less busy night but if they were still overwhelmed/delivering poor service I would not be impressed.
The owner of restaurant was so rude and the place was loud. Also most importantly, our desert layout and portion was different from other parties which obviously has one same desert menu. I won’t go this place again!
My daughter and I do Friday night sushi nights -- it's our thing. We've been going to Osaka for about three months nearly every Friday we're home. We've overlooked the mediocre services and high sushi prices far too long. Finally, the last Friday we had a 7 PM reservation and arrived around 6:45 PM. The host, pointed to a table and said it was ours but needed to be cleared -- give him five minutes. I went downstairs to use the restroom; came back and stood near the host desk waiting patiently. However, another host stopped the busboy as he went to set up what I thought was our table with two settings and asked him to add a third. Which was confusing; that second host (the host who let us know that was going to be our table) wasn't around sat three gentlemen once the busboy had set the table. I stopped him and said -- the last host told us that was our table. He rudely responded -- they were here first and had a reservation. When we arrived that party of three men was no in the foyer; while I have no doubt they had a reservation we definitely got to the restaurant before them. No apology, insisted he was right and I was wrong and went on to the next folks. When the original host returned I explained what happened he looked apologetic but then just kept focusing on others. It was handled poorly and this isn't the first time. Often, we arrive for reservation and wait 30 minutes or more. What is the point of a reservation? Other times we had to get up and ask them to tell the server we'd been sat and needed services. I think we waited 15 minutes once before anyone came to table to welcome us and take our drink order. This Friday night I'd had enough and used it as a teaching moment for my daughter. I let her know if there had been an apology and the hosts had prioritized us for the next table or offered something to drink that's one thing. When service is this poor we take our business elsewhere. Which we did. We now have a fabulous new sushi spot around the corner!
