We had a wonderful pre-theatre meal with friends, and can't wait to return for a more leisurely evening. (All of us are foodies, and one is a professional chef.) Gracious service from every employee with whom we came in contact enhanced the creative and delicious food. Only complaint was that unisex lavatory was a problem for some.
Great food and service! Our second time there and we will be back!
Food was good. Disappointed with dessert, barely touched it, communicated to waiter but he charged us anyway.
Amazing food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dined there twice this week.
Service is excellent! My guest had to take a phone call, they took her plate and put it under the warmer so that her food wouldn't be cold when she came back.
The food was incredible!! The wait staff know their food too -- and were quick to suggest great things based on our tastes and dietary restrictions. It is a meat heavy restaurant, so if you are a pescatarian or vegetarian, your options are limited, but the options they do have are INCREDIBLE. Also, save room for dessert! The goat cheese dessert was to die for, as was the chocolate one too! The only complaint we had was our drinks. We ordered the white sangria and it wasn't very good. Definitely way too sweet.
This was our first time at Ortzi and we were extremely pleased with everything! We look forward to coming back again
Every plate was delicious. The fine balance of flavors exquisite. The service was some of the best I've ever had. Attentive but not overbearing. I saw the Exec Chef monitoring tables from the kitchen do he could time the next course. Impeccable.
Really fun place with terrific tapas. Loved the potatoes and meatballs. Portions are surprisingly good. Paella at dinner is truly fabulous.
Outstanding in every way. Love the quality and uniqueness of the food. Can’t beat the value for money in NYC
I had tried to book for 4 through open table, and stated it was a birthday, but the website only allowed me to book for 2 and didn't transmit the birthday information.
Nevertheless it was a great choice. They cheerfully gave us a table for 4 . The restaurant is very attractive . As we were going to theater later, we considered the prix fixe option, but decided sharing 2 main dishes and some tapas and small plates would be more fun. The service was extremely courteous and efficient, everything came quickly . Each plate was attractive and delicious. We enjoyed being able to talk without shouting and we all agreed we would return to sample the other offerings. Instead of birthday cake or dessert at the restaurant we happily walked to a nearby frozen yogurt place for dessert.
The food was excellent and the atmosphere was very pleasant.
Tips only: pre-theatre menu is substantial; service is quick & efficient with extra time for dessert.
The service was so nice, attentive but not intrusive. We had never had Basque food before, and out server was so helpful in guiding our choices. The tapas was flavorful and interesting, and the desserts were excellent, too. A very nice atmosphere, lovely surroundings. We will return next time we visit NYC.
The food was delicious. A great after theater spot.
Loved our meal! Pre-theater on a Saturday night. No one does Tapas like Garces!
Tucked away in the corner by the wine cabinet, it was as if we had a private room. The food was phenomenal and the wine was all perfectly fitted to the food.
A great place to dine we had two diners, one on Monday another on Friday. Kudos
If 8 could give it more stars I would. Food is just incredible
Nice pre-theater prix fixe menu. Loved the divers scallops! Very attentive wait staff, conscious of curtain time.
2nd time here and got the same thing - garbanzo and freekeh salad. It was one of the best things I had ever eaten first time around but wasn't as good the 2nd time as the first, so concerned that consistency might be a problem. Also my client arrived at 11:55 and the hostess wouldn't seat her because it was before noon, left her sitting in a chair but seated other people. She was less than pleased and it set a bad tone. Still I am a big fan of Jose Garcez restaurants and will try it again because it's convenient and a good for lunch.
We have found a new favorite eatery. We were pleasantly surprised by the attractive decor, solicitous service, favorable pricing, and outstanding cuisine offered at Ortzi. Four of us dined here, and we all came away with the same views about our experience. It was fabulous.
I had the Habas ( Fava Bean Salad), which is delicious and perfect for the hot weather that is now descending upon us. I followed that up with Pollueloc (Red Chili Braised Chicken). The combination of flavors is exciting and spicy. The dish is large enough to make two meals out of, so I happily went home with leftovers. Two other diners enjoyed the Alcachofas (Artichokes), which is also very tasty and more substantial than the fava bean salad. The paella was perfectly executed as well. There were no missteps in anything we ordered.
The space is large and contemporary yet felt cozier than one might expect. We were delighted when the bill arrived and discovered that we had a far superior meal than we have had at many establishments for $30-$40 less per person including taxes and tip.
We will be back.
Really excellent food that defies easy categorization. The raw/lightly cooked fish dishes (e.g. poached trout, toro, red snapper tartare) are all excellent. Very fresh fish, with inventive preparations. We’ve also gotten the steak (very tasty) and the meatballs (good, if unmemorable). All the dishes we’ve tried have been solid, and we plan to go back til we’ve sampled the whole menu! Definitely pricey, and the ambience is just okay (not befitting the quality of food), but still highly recommended.
The food and service were excellent!!!
Nice surprise right across the street from my office!
What a happy surprise. We like Spanish and Basque food, so we came here for a pre-theatre, birthday dinner (mine). My partner has food allergies and sensitivities and medical conditions that really limit her dining options. We crossed our fingers, trusted the chef and ordered the tasting menu. We had a truly special dinner. Everything looked amazing, tasted great and was perfectly prepared, tailored to Judie's limited options. And somehow, the chef made our pre-theatre dinner a special occasion for both of us....We'll definitely be back.
Epic tasting menu. Service was perfect. Couldn’t have asked for a better meal. Highly recommend this place.
Excellent food and great portion size for a Tapas centric place. Lunch specials are good value for the neighborhood and delicious.
I'm quite fond of this restaurant and feel it deserves a much better fate. Admittedly it looks pedestrian in almost every way. But that is the chief knock. The San Sebastian lunch at $22 is a knockout value, once you get beyond its confusing offering. The hamburger is as good as any I've had in more celebrated spots. Service is friendly and helpful. Wine list a bit brief and pricey.
Well worth a visit for lunch or dinner. Current anniversary paella at $29 for two is a sensational value.
We went for brunch, and it was very good food. We ordered the French toast (excellent quality), the Benedicto (excellent quality), and the Smoked Salmon /Whitefish platter. We also ordered coffee and one Ajea cocktail; the cocktail was pretty good, as was the coffee. However, the food was so good, we found ourselves still hungry-the portion sizes were a bit on the smaller side, compared to their pricing. They might want to advertise their brunch as tapas, and price the dishes accordingly for the future.
Everyone liked it.
Nice restaurant located in the lobby of the hotel Luma. Spanish tapas menu, excellent artichoke salad which was a special. The Valencia Paella was delicious.
This is the third time I’ve eaten here and all three times have been great. Staff is professional and attentive and the food is tasty and unique.
Food was all delicious!!
Great service, good food. Specially la tortilla española and the pepito bocadillo.
We had a play to catch. Our waitress was amazing and got our food to us quickly and we left right on time.food was amazing
ordered the pre theatre 3 course and it came out so slow that we had to rush to theatre. Should not take 1 hour for main course to arrive.
Great dining, focusing on tapas with small plates suitable for sharing. Was not loud despite an open kitchen and provided a more intimate dining space than expected.
We went to Ortzi because I’m a fan of Jose Garces and needed a pre-theatre restaurant. Also wanted something other than typical Italian theatre district places.
The food was great, seats comfortable and service amicable. The $45 3-course pre-theatre menu (you need to ask) was delicious. Highly recommend. We all really enjoyed the food!!!
Like this place a lot. Prix fixe lunch is terrific, despite confusing menu. Don't know of a better burger in town. Friendly service makes this a real winner.
