Ortega's A Mexican Bistro
After we moved here from Santa Barbara, we were afraid that we'd end up having to settle for "San Diego" Mexican food. We'd been spoiled by Los Agaves in SB...and were delighted to stumble upon Ortega's Bistrot. It's always been excellent. Without fail.
Great service and food !
I love this place, but first day back they are still working out the kinks. One entree over-cooked, service sluggish. They will get back in the groove, and I’ll visit again for sure!
Good as always. First place we went since re-opening.
Meal was great. The carnitas and mahi mahi tacos were flavorful and delicious. The cocktails were great also. Kudos to the bartender!
A group of us had a birthday dinner here. The good was good and the atmosphere was great. The service was lacking. They might have been short staffed. Overall, I would return.
Great little Mexican restaurant with nice ambience and our dishes were excellent. Good value for the price and an excellent attentive waiter.
Went for the vegetarian options; my lady had the taco trio and I opted for the burrito - both were incredible, full of flavor, large portions and taste so rich in flavor. We also tried the table side guacamole - which was excellent. Great decor, warm staff and full bar!
We had brunch and enjoyed the champagne special with the carnitas plate and the steak burrito. The food was delicious as always and the service was very good as well. We sit on the patio because we bring our dog Abby with us. We really enjoy coming to Ortega's Bistro. Thank you again!!
We had a great dinner and awesome service.
Very tasty food. Attentive servers. Great prices/value
Best Mexican hot chocolate ever. Chocolatey, touch of cinnamon. The french toast was a nice starter. I believe they used Challah.
Entree was the mole. The sauce was tasty. The chicken tender. Seemed sauce was ladled on like gravy so flavor did not permeate the chicken, but it was good. Mostly neighborhood parking.
Friendly and timely service.
Overall, enjoyed Ortega's and would go again
It is a good neighborhood spot and the service is friendly. I
Great place and kind service but
Like this place and went for Valentine's day dinner. We liked the food had the lobster 3 course special. The soup and salad were meh. The lobster was good sized and tasty. The coconut flan was delic.
Problem was our waitress rushed us thru the meal. Brought out the entrees before the apps were finished and did the same with the desserts. I asked her to return the desserts as we were not ready for them and got a smart comment in response. Not appreciated.
Ortega's runs an annual Valentines Day special for 2 for $39.95 per person that includes soup or salad, 1 whold lobster, and a choice of two desserts. Their food is always excellent, as is their service.
Parking is a challenge at this location, glad we took a Lyft. Our food was good except I was looking forward to Ortega's Puerto Nuevo Lobster experience and my lobster was over cooked, very chewy portion next to shell. Beans and rice were delicious. Once I told the server about my lobster, he only said sorry and left the table. I would recommend you tell them do not over cook my lobster please.
Traditional Puerto nuevo style lobster and other regional dishes are sure to please a wide variety of tastebuds.
Food is very tasty. Lobster and sides are worth the cost.
Delicious food, good fast service, noise level was pretty loud
It was easy enough to park on the street as I got lucky finding a spot, but once we got in, I wasn't quite as lucky. We ordered our food soon enough, but I noticed more than one table not only got their food first, but they also paid their bill and left before us as well. Maybe they told the server they were in a hurry or were repeat customers, either way, it was a little annoying seeing that. The food itself was fairly forgettable as well, with the sole exception being the refried beans, which had a creamy texture and was perfectly seasoned. The rice was a little dry but pretty good, and the flour tortillas were fairly tasty. The fish I ordered was a bit overcooked and my wife's chicken mole was unremarkable.
I don’t get all the great reviews for this place. Maybe we were there on an off night but the service was incredibly slow and the food was mediocre. With so many great Mexican options in San Diego, I would definitely not recommend this one.
2 people served, 3rd person was served 5 min later - food wan not warm and meat was over cooked. 2 different servers approached the table each asking if we had been helped. Restaurant comped 1 meal and offered a coupon for a comp appetizer or dessert. The offer was appreciated so we’ll try go back another time. Everyone can have an off night. Nice environment, friendly staff. Parking sucks. Nice tortilla chips.
Not what i was expecting at all. We were expecting the same experience & flavor as Ortega's in Puerto Nuevo. NOT AT ALL.
We were disappointed.
Wonderful place. Sunday morning at noon, about 1/3 to 1/2 full - quietly pleasant excitement in the air. Mexican coffee (alcoholic!) was the bomb, as was the queso fundido - which was many degrees better than a few other Mexican joints down in North Park. Entrees were as expected, with not one dish really standing out - but could be testament to the consistency reputation; which is well deserved. Chicken enchiladas with dark meat - very moist and flavorful (some extra sauce to fill up the small empty spots on the plate would have been welcome). My son tooled thru half of the steak burrito (we ate too much of the chips - salsa was rockin' - and the queso that we ended up bringing most of our lunch home) which he said he enjoyed. Daughter had the Sandia salad which she said was good, but was expecting more - maybe with a bit more excitement. She finished, but appears to be a little underwhelmed. But overall - great joint, excellent food. Service was a tad slow, but it appeared there was only one server shared throughout the dozen or so tables. Some extra help tooled by, so I imagine it's not always like that - but I need to go on first impressions. Which means - we'll be back. :-)
We had a reservation for 5 people and were seated right next to the front door of the restaurant. It was a clod night and each time the door opened we felt a very strong cold breeze. We asked to be moved to another table (the restaurant was only about half full) but told that there were no other tables available. Water for our table and our drinks took 20 minutes and the margarita tasted watered down. Our food took even longer to be served and there was no visit by our server to check on us in between. When the food arrived it was luke warm, as if it had been sitting for awhile. We had been here many times before, but not for the last 2 years. We had brought a guest with us from out of town because our prior meals had all been wonderful, so we were very disappointed.
We came to visit for an early dinner New Year’s Eve. Initially i was a little concerned that there were ample tables available but I’m happy I booked the reservation. The ambience was nice and food was really good. I ordered the shrimp and lobster with rice and beans, which was amazing. Lobster isn’ta dish i normally order but it was on special that night for &13 off! Pomegranate margarita was also delicious! Will definitely return.. Oscar’s is a must try!
Great food, excellent service. Will be back for sure!
Food was excellent (try the steak and lobster) margaritas were excellent as well.
The Patron Margarita is a must order. Our meals were delicious and the service was outstanding!
We love this place, and frequently go here for brunch. The food is excellent, the price is right and the staff goes above and beyond to make sure you are accommodated.
Introduced our friends to one of our favorite places they loved it also everything was perfect this is one of my favorite places for lobster
Very nice ambiance, relaxed atmosphere and wait staff wonderful. Ordered Carnitas and it delicious. This is a great choice for a fabulous Mexican meal.
Food was OK but service was really slow. We went through 4 baskets of chips waiting for our food.
This place is amazing. Great service, great food, especially the lobster and the Caesar salad with avocado. This is my dad’s favorite restaurant and we go here for lobster every Father’s Day.
The parking was the only issue. There was none
It had been a bit since I have been to Ortega’s but always such great food reminds me of Mexico and the service was fantastic can’t wait o to visit again
We live in San Diego, and Ortega's is one of our regular places to eat. When family members fly in from the East Coast, we literally have to stop at Ortega's for "real" Mexican food after we pick them up at the airport. Warm, friendly staff and reasonable prices. We especially like the veggie burrito, fish tacos and mole chicken.
Had shells in the lobster meat, I had to spit out twice. Ordered the lobster dinner for $39.99.
The crab enchilada was really sweet, overpowered the taste of the crab meat.
Every time I’m here it’s amazing! The margaritas, the food, the salsa.
