Ortega's A Mexican Bistro
It was easy enough to park on the street as I got lucky finding a spot, but once we got in, I wasn't quite as lucky. We ordered our food soon enough, but I noticed more than one table not only got their food first, but they also paid their bill and left before us as well. Maybe they told the server they were in a hurry or were repeat customers, either way, it was a little annoying seeing that. The food itself was fairly forgettable as well, with the sole exception being the refried beans, which had a creamy texture and was perfectly seasoned. The rice was a little dry but pretty good, and the flour tortillas were fairly tasty. The fish I ordered was a bit overcooked and my wife's chicken mole was unremarkable.
I don’t get all the great reviews for this place. Maybe we were there on an off night but the service was incredibly slow and the food was mediocre. With so many great Mexican options in San Diego, I would definitely not recommend this one.
2 people served, 3rd person was served 5 min later - food wan not warm and meat was over cooked. 2 different servers approached the table each asking if we had been helped. Restaurant comped 1 meal and offered a coupon for a comp appetizer or dessert. The offer was appreciated so we’ll try go back another time. Everyone can have an off night. Nice environment, friendly staff. Parking sucks. Nice tortilla chips.
Not what i was expecting at all. We were expecting the same experience & flavor as Ortega's in Puerto Nuevo. NOT AT ALL.
We were disappointed.
Wonderful place. Sunday morning at noon, about 1/3 to 1/2 full - quietly pleasant excitement in the air. Mexican coffee (alcoholic!) was the bomb, as was the queso fundido - which was many degrees better than a few other Mexican joints down in North Park. Entrees were as expected, with not one dish really standing out - but could be testament to the consistency reputation; which is well deserved. Chicken enchiladas with dark meat - very moist and flavorful (some extra sauce to fill up the small empty spots on the plate would have been welcome). My son tooled thru half of the steak burrito (we ate too much of the chips - salsa was rockin' - and the queso that we ended up bringing most of our lunch home) which he said he enjoyed. Daughter had the Sandia salad which she said was good, but was expecting more - maybe with a bit more excitement. She finished, but appears to be a little underwhelmed. But overall - great joint, excellent food. Service was a tad slow, but it appeared there was only one server shared throughout the dozen or so tables. Some extra help tooled by, so I imagine it's not always like that - but I need to go on first impressions. Which means - we'll be back. :-)
We had a reservation for 5 people and were seated right next to the front door of the restaurant. It was a clod night and each time the door opened we felt a very strong cold breeze. We asked to be moved to another table (the restaurant was only about half full) but told that there were no other tables available. Water for our table and our drinks took 20 minutes and the margarita tasted watered down. Our food took even longer to be served and there was no visit by our server to check on us in between. When the food arrived it was luke warm, as if it had been sitting for awhile. We had been here many times before, but not for the last 2 years. We had brought a guest with us from out of town because our prior meals had all been wonderful, so we were very disappointed.
We came to visit for an early dinner New Year’s Eve. Initially i was a little concerned that there were ample tables available but I’m happy I booked the reservation. The ambience was nice and food was really good. I ordered the shrimp and lobster with rice and beans, which was amazing. Lobster isn’ta dish i normally order but it was on special that night for &13 off! Pomegranate margarita was also delicious! Will definitely return.. Oscar’s is a must try!
Great food, excellent service. Will be back for sure!
Food was excellent (try the steak and lobster) margaritas were excellent as well.
The Patron Margarita is a must order. Our meals were delicious and the service was outstanding!
We love this place, and frequently go here for brunch. The food is excellent, the price is right and the staff goes above and beyond to make sure you are accommodated.
Introduced our friends to one of our favorite places they loved it also everything was perfect this is one of my favorite places for lobster
Very nice ambiance, relaxed atmosphere and wait staff wonderful. Ordered Carnitas and it delicious. This is a great choice for a fabulous Mexican meal.
Food was OK but service was really slow. We went through 4 baskets of chips waiting for our food.
This place is amazing. Great service, great food, especially the lobster and the Caesar salad with avocado. This is my dad’s favorite restaurant and we go here for lobster every Father’s Day.
The parking was the only issue. There was none
It had been a bit since I have been to Ortega’s but always such great food reminds me of Mexico and the service was fantastic can’t wait o to visit again
We live in San Diego, and Ortega's is one of our regular places to eat. When family members fly in from the East Coast, we literally have to stop at Ortega's for "real" Mexican food after we pick them up at the airport. Warm, friendly staff and reasonable prices. We especially like the veggie burrito, fish tacos and mole chicken.
Had shells in the lobster meat, I had to spit out twice. Ordered the lobster dinner for $39.99.
The crab enchilada was really sweet, overpowered the taste of the crab meat.
Every time I’m here it’s amazing! The margaritas, the food, the salsa.
Best chili relenos in town.
My second time here and again the flood was delicious, the service was perfect, the ambiance just lovely. It beats so many high dining establishments because of the quality.
As far as the location it was very difficult to park and the surrounding community was very dirty. We ordered steak and lobster which was a good price but we asked for the steak to be medium and it was cooked well done. Our server was friendly but did not check up on us after our meal was brought to the table.
Delicious food and great service! Had the carnitas burrito. Amazing. My wife had fish tacos, also amazing!
After a delicious meal in Baja at Puerto Nuevo, I was so happy to have discovered this place right here locally … it was amazingly authentic and delicious, we were both quite impressed at the deliciousness of everything we ordered - we will be back, and we will bring friends!! Then I found out a neighbor's relative is the owner :) See you again soon !
I always enjoy stint here when I visit San Diego, it’s a great place for happy hour or brunch. Their tortillas are delicious, just like my abuelita would make. The carnitas are just amazing!
We really enjoyed brunch in the latio at Ortega's. Our dog Abby was with us and we were able to have her on the patio.
The food & service is so great & they have excellent margaritas!! Delicious
Not much meat in burrito. . Service was great!
Had dinner here with 4 of my friends. The food and drinks were delicious! I would definitely recommend this place and I would love to eat there again.
We had a great time, food was delicious and service outstanding!!!
Loved the Ambience, taste, service and the daily Lobster Special is phenomenal. My favorite part was the tortillas!!!! They tasted home made! YUM!!! I will definitely go back.
When we arrived for reservation we were seated earlier. When seated my boyfriend went to move a plate on table and was stuck to table with piece of chewing gum in which I asked to be moved. Salsas were gross. The only thing that was good was guacamole and flour tortillas. Ordered 2 lobster dishes and they were both over cooked for market value.
Always enjoy dining at Ortegas. The grilled shrimp tacos trio never disappoints. Always cooked to perfection.
Food and service were very good. The vegetarian burrito was a winner! The burrito was Much better than average. Would be nice if you could order items all a cart for instance a taco if you were not that hungry.
Great food and service.
Our service was exceptional! Delicious food, as well!
Food was ok, fresh however not exactly flavorful which is not ideal for a Mexican restaurant, the hot sauce and salsa should not be a substitute for taste. Our drinks were terrible the 1st round and tolerable the 2nd time around. Price point wise was a bit high for the quality and quantity you are served. Our server was kind and apologized for the items that were not ideal. Sadly a pretty space that does not require a second look.
Food and service was very good, time of visit was relatively busy with a public event going on, but I would rate it as one of my favorite restaurants!
I would recommend it for the price but the food wasn’t the best and the service was a bit slow
Last time I was here was 7 years ago with friends. And I don’t remember the taste of the food anymore, but today; everything is on the sweet side and it’s over powering so is my husband food. The service was alright. Kinna slow. Have to flag down our waiter couples of time. Probably not coming back here.
