Ortega's A Mexican Bistro
Had shells in the lobster meat, I had to spit out twice. Ordered the lobster dinner for $39.99.
The crab enchilada was really sweet, overpowered the taste of the crab meat.
Every time I’m here it’s amazing! The margaritas, the food, the salsa.
Best chili relenos in town.
My second time here and again the flood was delicious, the service was perfect, the ambiance just lovely. It beats so many high dining establishments because of the quality.
As far as the location it was very difficult to park and the surrounding community was very dirty. We ordered steak and lobster which was a good price but we asked for the steak to be medium and it was cooked well done. Our server was friendly but did not check up on us after our meal was brought to the table.
Delicious food and great service! Had the carnitas burrito. Amazing. My wife had fish tacos, also amazing!
After a delicious meal in Baja at Puerto Nuevo, I was so happy to have discovered this place right here locally … it was amazingly authentic and delicious, we were both quite impressed at the deliciousness of everything we ordered - we will be back, and we will bring friends!! Then I found out a neighbor's relative is the owner :) See you again soon !
I always enjoy stint here when I visit San Diego, it’s a great place for happy hour or brunch. Their tortillas are delicious, just like my abuelita would make. The carnitas are just amazing!
We really enjoyed brunch in the latio at Ortega's. Our dog Abby was with us and we were able to have her on the patio.
The food & service is so great & they have excellent margaritas!! Delicious
Not much meat in burrito. . Service was great!
Had dinner here with 4 of my friends. The food and drinks were delicious! I would definitely recommend this place and I would love to eat there again.
We had a great time, food was delicious and service outstanding!!!
Loved the Ambience, taste, service and the daily Lobster Special is phenomenal. My favorite part was the tortillas!!!! They tasted home made! YUM!!! I will definitely go back.
When we arrived for reservation we were seated earlier. When seated my boyfriend went to move a plate on table and was stuck to table with piece of chewing gum in which I asked to be moved. Salsas were gross. The only thing that was good was guacamole and flour tortillas. Ordered 2 lobster dishes and they were both over cooked for market value.
Always enjoy dining at Ortegas. The grilled shrimp tacos trio never disappoints. Always cooked to perfection.
Food and service were very good. The vegetarian burrito was a winner! The burrito was Much better than average. Would be nice if you could order items all a cart for instance a taco if you were not that hungry.
Great food and service.
Our service was exceptional! Delicious food, as well!
Food was ok, fresh however not exactly flavorful which is not ideal for a Mexican restaurant, the hot sauce and salsa should not be a substitute for taste. Our drinks were terrible the 1st round and tolerable the 2nd time around. Price point wise was a bit high for the quality and quantity you are served. Our server was kind and apologized for the items that were not ideal. Sadly a pretty space that does not require a second look.
Food and service was very good, time of visit was relatively busy with a public event going on, but I would rate it as one of my favorite restaurants!
I would recommend it for the price but the food wasn’t the best and the service was a bit slow
Last time I was here was 7 years ago with friends. And I don’t remember the taste of the food anymore, but today; everything is on the sweet side and it’s over powering so is my husband food. The service was alright. Kinna slow. Have to flag down our waiter couples of time. Probably not coming back here.
Diverse menu, attentive service, high quality entrees and desserts; average of $50 per person including appetizer, drink, entree and desert-good value!
Very relaxed dining experience. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure all refills were promptly addressed. Table-side guacamole was fantastic, as was the tortilla soup!
Lobster was well worth it - very fresh and well-prepared.
Many other menu selections that I will be back to try!
Food was great. They brought out the wrong dish but once I brought to their attention they quickly brought out the correct dish. Excellent service
First, the coffee had a rich flavor with a nice mild cinnamon flavor. 2nd, We ordered the wonderful Queso Fundido with 3 Cheeses and Chorizo & Peppers, Incredible. 3rd, we both had a flavorful Chiliquiles with fresh corn and flour tortillas, Amazing! Tableside Guacamole is always welcome and worth it. Will return!
We come down from Oceanside to Ortega's for a special occasion. My wife absolutely loves the Baja style lobster. The service was very good and so was the lobster. We've been there 3 times on a Saturday early evening and the restaurant was not busy. Can't talk about what else is on the menu because we don't even look at it. The freshly made tortillas are delicious. The main problem in the Hillside area is the parking. It can really put a damper on things looking for a place. Ortega's does not have it's own parking. We went into a city lot across the street, put in a credit card for 3 hours and it was $5 per hr for a total of $15 for parking for Ortega's. However, our lobster was delicious.
We were early, just after 5:00 PM reservations, due to theater time start, so had to hit early dinner. So staff was still minimal and a bit lacking in attention...but the food and beverages are always great!! Just mark this bleep as due to early dinner hour!! All very friendly and pleasant!! We'll be back!
We came for a birthday and there was a note made on the reservation when the reservation was made however, it was not brought to the attention of the table and there was not a celebratory offering to the birthday boy. I don't know if Ortega's has a policy where they don't offer something for birthdays but I was hoping something for the birthday boy himself and we ended up leaving without an acknowledgement from the restaurant or even a happy birthday.
The restaurant is a delicious spot. I have eaten here before multiple times. They have delicious margaritas, a wonderful menu, and an incredible happy hour but I would make sure you let the staff know in case they did not see the note you make when placing the reservation through opentable.
Very nice place, great food, good service. Will go back!
Good food and good service. Cute atmosphere. We will go back.
I really loved the atmosphere it was super authentic, the salsa was amazing and so were the drinks, the food was fair, the pork had a overwhelming taste of cinnamon or nutmeg I liked the shrimp tacos the food is really pretty, the service was great everyone was friendly.
So I really like this place...good food and friendly staff. You have the option to either site outside and people watch on University Ave or sit inside. I guess the only thing that puzzles me is that the place is never busy? But is that really a complaint?
It was 8 pm on Saturday night and the place was dead. Maybe that's why the service was excellent, but the food was nothing to write home about at all. Its my second visit, so I sampled a few vegetarian dishes, and frankly, they all tasted the same. Its not terrible food at all, just very uninspired and bland.
The famous pomegranate margarita tasted like a 5$ HH special. Very disappointing. Hillcrest has hundreds of great restaurants, so I can;t imagine how Ortega's stays in business. I hear they do have amazing brunch, but given my 2 dinners here, I'll go to Chocolate or Fig Tree instead.
Great ambiance. Food pretty good. But sat for a really really long time with no waiter! One guy breezed past me multiple times. Finally the bartender came over! What??? Honestly was not great enough food to return. Sorry to say because some staff were quite nice. Service seemed a bit chaotic and place was not busy at 7pm.
Incredible food and service, our go to place when in San Diego.
Soooo good! Ortega's Mex Bistro is a cool place, the service is wonderful and the food is noteworthy. Our server, Jonathan, steered us well beginning with a nice mango and lime refreshment, and beers, and on through to the main events. One of the best seafood dishes in the city (& that's saying something) is the Huachinango - plantain crusted grilled pacific snapper. The lovely side vegetables and beans were the perfect accompaniment.
Food was good. Took 30mins for them to figure out the bill. Wont be rushing back anytime soon.
Food is always great here. We keep coming back - one of our absolute favorites!
