French
Designed by partner Jean Denoyer, Orsay strikes that difficult balance of sophisticated-chic in a warm convivial atmosphere. Dark mahogany raised paneled walls meet Art Nouveau styled arches in a deep, creamy butter color. The floor is a work of art, Italian mosaic tiles in warm tones of precious metals hand laid in a beautiful fan pattern that floats in waves across the expanse of floor. Banquettes with high wood backs topped with frosted glass panels provide privacy if wanted, and the low, soft lighting emanates from Art Nouveau period chandeliers that Denoyer had custom designed. A 20-foot long zinc-topped wood bar shipped in one piece from France, and French doors that spill onto the sidewalk terrace, completing the feeling that you are in the 9th arrondisement in Paris. This sophisticated and elegant Parisian-style brasserie marries modern French cuisine and classic brasserie fare. Orsay's award-winning wine list includes all 300 predominantly French and American varietals.

Our main course came before we even finished appetizers. Our oysters mysteriously went from $3.50 on the menu to $4 on the bill. Also, even though we noted on our reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary, there was no aknowlidgement. The restaurant is rather noisy. But all in all food was very good, service very pleasant and they corrected their mistakes promptly.

I made a 7:45 reservation.
My date arrived at 6:50 and stopped at the host station and gave my name. The hostess said she didn’t have any rez with my name.
I arrived at 6:55 and checked in with a male host. He did find the reservation in the system. He asked if we’d like to be seated now. I said we will be at the bar, could you please come seat us at the reservation time (40 mins later, so we could have a drink first) and he said ok. At 8:30 I looked at my watch and realized we’d not been approached by any of the three hosts. We went to the front and inquired and they all seemed utterly confused. They found us a table but why they couldn’t manage to seat us at our reservation time 45 minutes before that, I don’t know.
Also no one offered to take our coats when we arrived. I came back from the bar with the coats after finding my date.
And around 9:45 when we were ready to leave, we stood at the coat area for a minute or two while the hostess was busy changing her shoes in there. She looked up very flustered to see us. Perhaps she should be doing her personal tasks in the ladies room or a staff changing room. Or fired. It just seems a lot less elegant than it used to be. We won’t be back unless we hear things have been improved.
FYI this is my first ever negative review of a restaurant.

They are very accommodating.

The menu is classic French Bistro fare- very well executed- but my lamb shanks were a little dry and had some Cinnamon coating which is unnecessary.

The noise level on the banquette seating is fine, in the center of the restaurant it will be hard to hear. Our service was mixed- some really skilled staff, some brusque.

But it is a lovely interior, a great atmosphere and mostly good food. I would go back.

Wasn't very crowded but waitress was a little unfriendly and only sparsely visited our table. We had to flag someone down 3x for water refills and coffee updates. Otherwise, the food was lovely as usual and the noise level is never terrible.

We visited on New Years Eve. It was very busy and the staff seemed overwhelmed. They did not greet us when we arrived. I had to ask who to speak to concerning our reservation. They had us wait without seating for a table to be made ready. This was somewhat frustrating.
Once we were seated, they took care of us well until dessert. They seemed to have forgotten us.
The food was delicious and well presented. I would recommend this restaurant despite the service. I would like to believe the lack was due to it being New Years Eve.

My boyfriend and I came here for NYE dinner and Orsay did not disappoint. We both got the pre-fixe menu, starting with a hamachi tartare cucumber cup and a mini puff filled with truffle cheese. I didn’t think the meal could get better, but it did. I got the house smoked salmon that had a vinegar-y flavor to it and was delicious. Steven got the lobster with puff-pastry that was so rich and decadent. He got the veal loin and I got the halibut, both fantastic. And the dessert of trio of chocolates was amazing. The middle meringue was the best, with dulce de leche and chocolate sauce to scrape up.

The whole meal was amazing, and the service was fantastic. My only complaint was they brought out our first appetizer when we weren’t done with our mini pre-appetizer. We knew they were trying to get people in and out, but we said we wanted to take our time and they were fine either that.

We’ve been three times now and we will be back!!

We attended a theater performance, and Orsay was in the neighborhood. What luck for us! We had a lovely dinner, and will keep it on our "list" for when we are in the Upper East Side.

The duck in orange sauce was a good example of how to properly drain out the layer of fat below the skin, but the duck was obviously reheated. It did not have the succulence or flavor of a duck fresh from the oven or the rotisserie. Very bland and semi-dry. The sauce was flavorful. It was accompanied by a "wild rice cake" that was about 80% white rice. No discernable wild-rice taste, and quite dry and compressed. The coq au vin was so-so, nothing special. We asked before ordering if it was authentic, meaning was it a rooster and not chicken? "Coq" means "rooster". The server replied that it was chicken, and she was unaware of this meaning, as she did not speak French. No complaint there, neither do we, except that staffers ought at least to know the meanings of the French terms on the menu. We mourn the passing of Le Boeuf a la Mode, an East Side French restaurant where the cooking was blazingly fresh and flavorful.

The current menu lacks appeal. The coq au vin was underdone. We were never offered additional bread and the bread plates were rapidly removed. Our server was not at all gracious and bordered on rude. The decaf cappuccino seemed to have been made with stale coffee. Usually a good restaurant, perhaps an off night.

Belleruche cotes du rhone a superb wine. The cook forgot our appetizers, so when the main course arrived, we cancelled the appetizers. The waitress and maitre d' were most apologetic and filled up our glasses with the wine. We plan to return to see if we like the appetizers. The main fish course was fine.

Orsay has been one of our go-to spots for years. Not so much anymore. Service is iffy, food overpriced and there is a general atmosphere of mediocre and indifference. Risotto was bland and tasteless. Other dishes were ok, but way overpriced or Sunday Brunch. Overall, we can do better for the money spent!

I like Orsay since the menu is large and the food is uniformly good. Great wine list, too. However don’t u detest and why there is no pate de campagne on the menu since that is a staple of every French bistro.

The negative about Orsay is that the noise level is always WAY too high...don’t go if you want to have a conversation without shouting.

This restaurant is so screamingly loud that at a table for 4 on a weeknight, I could not hear what our guests were saying much of the time. Tables are so close together that I was bumped several times by other patrons. Service was chaotic and slow. We had to ask for the status of every course over the three hours we were there. Food was mediocre at best.

Our meal was far less than satisfactory! The service was practically non existent and we sat at our table over 30 minutes before anyone asked us if we wanted a cocktail.

The service never improved and the food was less than mediocre. The potatoes lyonnaise were tasteless and the serving of Prime Rib was very scant.

My friend found her Flat Iron Steak tough and tasteless as well. The waiter brought our check without our asking for it and although there was plenty of help in the room nobody ever cared enough to inquire about how we found everything! For a restaurant of this caliber the entire experience was less than agreeable! We should dispute this charge!

Very disappointing. I have gone to Orsay for years...and brought two out of town ladies to lunch on Wednesday with the plan of having a local treat. We asked about soufflés. We were told "there were only two left!" How could that be? Eggs and cheese. And a specialty that Orsay is known for. It just put a pall over the experience.
