Boiled salted green soy beans
Food was excellent. Originally sat us in front of the very smelly exhaust of an air conditioner (industrial smell and very noisy); they readily addressed a relocation upon our request. But that area should not be used for seating. Service was timely and efficient. The atmosphere, however, lacks any appeal. I would suggest they put some effort into making the place more visually appealing. The food was delicious and portions generous!
We were a bit worried when seeing all the negative reviews on YELP but then read more and found out it is the only Japanese owned and operated sushi place in Key West, and since it also is the only place offering outdoor seating with a nice ambience we decided to try it.
Service was a bit slow as the reviews explained but it was super friendly and really it is not that slow, it is what you expect from a decent sushi restaurant that prepares everything fresh to order.
The edamame were a little salty but cooked perfectly, steaming hot and still had a perfect bite. Tried the tempura as it is a good indicator of wether they can cook authentic Japanese or not. The shrimp tempura were perfect, crispy on the outside, hot and juicy on the inside.
Had the sushi platters and a few rolls and some sashimi. Everything was perfect, The nigiri perfect size as in Japan, the rice cooked perfectly, the wasabi was real, the sashimi cuts generous and came with the shiso leaves that gives that perfect flavor.
We also tried the strawberry tempura for desert just because and it was surprisingly nice given we are not keen on deserts.
They had a good selection of Japanese beer and sake.
Having lived and studied in Japan it was such a treat to find a real authentic sushi restaurant in Key West. I wish we had a similar place where I live. We loved it so much that we returned on our last evening in Key West and it did not disappoint second time around. There we also tried the Temaki sushi (not on menu) which were perfectly made, crispy, perfect amount of rice, full of fish, veggies and shiso leaves.
Origami is not for those looking for fast service, buttomless cheap food, but if you are looking for an authentic experience with fresh fish and great ambience try it out. Origami remains a reason to return to Key West.
Sue was a wonderful waitress and took care of all our needs.
Excellent sashimi! Had tuna , salmon and fluke. Also not overpriced!
