or, The Whale is located in the former gymnasium of the Salvation Army building giving the space its distinct look and feel. The track above the gym floor was transformed into catwalk seating and upstairs bar. As you travel down to the lower level you will enter the main dining area with the open kitchen, a window into the butcher room and a small wine cellar that doubles as a private dining space. We use the freshest and sustainable seafood, humanly raised beef, poultry, pork and lamb. Dry aged steaks, pork chops, and whole fish and lobster will be wood fired on a 6 foot wood burning grill. Reminiscent of the classic East Coast seafood houses and steak houses recreated to fit modern times. A fun relaxed atmosphere with a touch of sophistication. A strong cocktail program, well rounded craft beer list, well curated wine program with all the big reds for your steak and complex whites to compliment all the seafood you can handle.

Very good meal, just what we were looking for. It was my birthday, and I had indicated that on the reservation, but it was not acknowledged. Would have been nice.

First time in Pittsburgh and scanned the internet for recommendations. This was a good one. One note: it was not clear in the address info that the restaurant was inside the Distrikt hotel. We had a very hard time finding it.
The space was interesting and modern; we liked the open kitchen. Our server, Jason, was in training and did a wonderful job.
We were very pleased with the meal. The ‘duck three ways’ was outstanding as an appetizer. The mussels, unfortunately, were forgettable. Rather bland and served in a pot that was too large and clunky to eat from because its sides were so high. Scallops with pork belly were beautiful and well-executed. Very nice. Crab Mac & Cheese was wonderful. Very rich, as expected, with a lot of crab, crispy crumb topping and a terrific hit of black pepper.
The house-made desserts all sound great. We saved room for the lemon tart with jasmine ice cream and sesame brittle. Super happy we did!

Ordered scallops....got three sea scallops nicely arranged on a plate with minimal garnishes...for $36! Dinner did not come with side salad. Wait staff prompt and courteous.

Our server Andy admitted it was his second shift on his own, but he did a FANTASTIC job! When we asked a question that he didn't have the answer to he admitted that he wasn't sure and found out right away for us! We will be back!

My Rib Eye was a bit fatty. Once I got through the fat, it was very tasty. Great service. Great food. My wife had the Trout and it was delicious. Crab Mac and Cheese is the best Mac and Cheese I've ever had. Better than Capital Grill. Potatoes were super. Desserts were very good. As good as it gets for desserts. Highly recommend the experience.

Was expecting more of a seafood restaurant, not chop house with a few seafood options. Salmon was the only fish on menu besides the whole fish option. Both our dinners were heavily over salted. My wife couldn't finish hers. Went somewhere else for dessert. Disappointing anniversary dinner.

Or, The Whale exceeded our high expectations! We arrived a bit early and enjoyed a great discussion with Siri (yes, a real person) about the inventive bar menu. Then we enjoyed every single bite of our dinner: steak tartare with lots of vibrant flavor and a remarkable black garlic aioli, grilled Caesar salad with crispy boquerones and wonderful cornbread croutons, and quite possibly the best scallops I’ve ever had at a restaurant - perfectly seared, pillowed on meltingly tender pads of pork belly, with a strip of delicious rhubarb pickle atop. Our server, Catherine, was attentive & helpful, but not intrusive. We wish there was chef’s table seating!

Our meal was delicious, and the server (and service) were exceptional. The dishes were explained very well, and prepared as described. The scallops over pork belly was a combination of flavors that we had never had, and was special. The fish stew was full of seafood, and has a nice tangy broth. The roasted Caesar salad was huge and very good (go ahead and let them serve the anchovies - they are fried crispy!)

Had heard a lot about this restaurant and was excited to try even though most had been for dinner, figured brunch would be ok. Service was the biggest disappointment, slow but friendly. The restaurant was not overly busy, so that was not the issue. I ordered an omelet with a side of greens, both needed seasoning and had asked for salt and pepper to two different people and by the time it was delivered, my food was cold.

Went here for birthday brunch, very cool ambiance. I'm a big fan of the whale wall mural! Drinks were tasty (spicy alcoholic coffee in the morning, yes please!) and the food was very good also - my Maryland girl says she enjoyed the crab frittata immensely.

Took girlfriend out for Mother's Day brunch (it was my second time eating at Or The Whale). We had Maryland frittata and Salmon salad with farro grain. Both dishes were tasty, nice presentation. Coctails deserve a praise too (we opted for refreshing gin and mint cocktail). The dessert, however, was a total disappointment. What was described on the menu as "lemon tart" was some type of pastry shell filled with blueberry jam/compote and topped with slice of lemon pudding? We told the waitress - whatever it was, it most certainly is NOT a classic lemon tart. Besides that, food & drinks were delicious paired with great ambiance of swanky "The Distrikt" hotel.

The food was very creative and fresh. We had the trout, scallops and steak tartare. I would just suggest less salt in everything. Let us taste the integrity of the great food. The service was friendly and helpful. The ambiance is cool but too bright. Turn up the tunes and turn down the lights. Enjoyed our evening.

Great experience overall. My wife had the scallops, which were excellent, especially the beet reduction. I Had the NY Strip steak, which was very well-seasoned. I was pleasantly surprised, found it better than a double-the-price comparable steak at Eddie Merlot's. Portions were good, we felt just full enough that we didn't even need dessert. Would highly recommend.
