We are regulars, but not sure that I have ever written a review. Opal strikes just the right balance, when you want a “nice” dinner without breaking the bank. Food is excellent, and the service attentive without being overbearing. Whether a birthday, anniversary or just need a good dinner out, Opal is our place!

We wanted to visit “downtown Santa Barbara” during a wedding guest visit to Ritz- Carlton Bacara Santa Barbara Resort. I looked at online presentations and selected Opal. Reservation was easy and interactive. We arrived a few minutes late due to earlier flight delay from Dallas. No problem. I was initially disappointed that the “patio” portion of the restaurant turned out to be a “plywood pavilion “ in State St. in front of the restaurant- likely a leftover Covid era dining room. That’s not what I had in mind but accepted a table there. Our dinner was excellent,the meal was a good value, service was relaxed and we enjoyed twilight on State Street. Overall a nice experience.

Outdoor seating was wonderful, except it felt like service was a bit spotty. Diners at the table even went up to the host stand to ask for a server (they had been there about 15-20 minutes without anyone even approaching their table). Started with the ahi crusted appetizer, followed by a couple of other appetizers as the "main course": beet salad (sans gorganzola) and ravioli topped with duck confit. All were fabulous. Topped it off with assorted gelato for dessert and a cup of coffee. Coffee refill took some time to appear, and when it did the server tried to get every last drop out of the thermos which appeared to have not been refilled. I got a couple of drops of lukewarm liquid, and by that time I was just over the "service" and was ready to leave, so I declined the offer to wait for a fresh brew. No telling how long THAT would take.

Food was ok, but nothing too special. Both dishes (mushroom risotto and spicy beef tips with angel hair) were under salted. The spicy dish was not spicy at all and the mushroom risotto had about 5 sliced mushrooms in total. Our waiter was not very attentive, it felt like he thought we could t afford to be eating there. He said he’s being bread, he didn’t. I had to ask for a water refill twice. At one point he commented on how my water glass was empty but then never brought me a refill. For the price point of this restaurant, I would really expect more. In the past I have eaten here and been really impressed with food and service. Hopefully they were just having an off night…

My salad was good--but a bit overloaded with rocket. I also had a second appetizer instead of a main. It was OK but not delicious. Duck confit over portobello mushroom raviolis sounded good, but the confit was shredded. This rendered the duck tasteless. Bad idea. They have a pretty large menu, but little of it seems inspired.

Fantastic food - unique flavor combinations- delicious! wine list was comprehensive and, at our request, the owner gave us recommendations for pairing with our meal - it was perfect! Our server, Sabina, was outstanding. She is very knowledgeable and professional; she was a pleasure to interact with. We are returning to Santa Barbara in July and definitely plan on dining here when we do.

The filo Shrimp is my all time favorite appetizer, no restaurant does that recipe better than Opal. We had a fillet Mignon and a Rib-eye, both steaks were cooked to perfection. The portions are generous but not obscene, service is professional without being syrupy, they're nailing it.
