A relaxing escape from the bustle of the city. The food is light, fresh, and full of flavor.
Loved everything about Onsen - the fact that it's attached to a modern bathhouse, the restaurant feels like you're in Japan. The menu is well executed with outstanding izakaya dishes and a solid sake list. Such a hidden gem in SF!
Food is great! I had a hard time choosing what to take, everything in the menu sounds amazing. Would most definitely come back
Bathhouse followed by the most delicious Japanese fare
Fun meal with great Sake. Enjoyable atmosphere. Friendly, capable and engaging staff. Great night out.
Awesome awesome awesome, seriously love this place
Best SF Dining experience! Highly recommend going to bathhouse and then dinner. It’s perfectly paired and staff is incredible 😃
Once inside the door, the dining experience was excellent. Beautiful setting, excellent service, creative food. The only reason I am not giving this restaurant a 5-star rating is because I mis-read the map and thought the location was on the edge of the Tenderloin - not in the middle. Walking from Civic Center BART to the restaurant was quite unpleasant, and more unpleasant walking back. I recommend the restaurant but not the walk.
Food & baths experience were a perfect pairing. So glad I stumbled upon this place while visiting the SF area.
Excellent food. Music was a bit too loud but also discordant. Could the management choose some traditional Japanese music, perhaps?
The service was outstanding and the food was above and beyond my expectations. I’m still thinking about it three days later. Such a good meal!
Amazing food!!! Amazing service!!! The menu is very different and innovative :)
good food but worst location and terrible service
It was heavenly to say the least. This place was beautiful and we tried the Onsen in the morning it was just what we needed. I can’t wait to come back! The pork skewers are to die for! The experience was amazing!
Very overhyped. Food is decent and doesn’t look anything like the pictures. Disclaimer: we only went for the dining experience and not the bath or spa.
Of the four skewers that we got, the chicken meatballs was our favorite (great flavor, unique style). The cod was substantial and filling, but unremarkable.
We would not order the steak or the squid again, namely because there was so little on each skewer (felt like half of a small squid separated into two portions, and two thin slices of beef). The flavor for both was also very simple and underwhelming, so they were disappointing in flavor as well as value.
Wonderful sake selection.
The starter dishes are the true stars of the show here. If you enjoy mushrooms, you must get the mushroom dumplings: earthy rich flavorful dumplings swimming in a silky chicken broth. We also loved the pickles assortment (full of fun veggies like romanesco, leek, okra). The sashimi was fresh and priced well.
the food was delicious - but after a few hours at the spa, we needed more substantial food rather than the small bites (that were tasty, but expensive).
Beautiful meal in a lovely setting. We visited the bath house before dinner and it was such a fun experience. Great date night!
Fabulous!!! Would highly recommend going to the onsen baths beforehand, then enjoying the onsen restaurant. The food is small bites / bar food - perfect post-soak snack!
Loved it! Only the steam room wasn't working the whole time we were there, everything else was amazing
I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while, finally made it. Not the most convenient or desirable location. Everyone in the group really enjoyed the food. The lamb & quail skewers were very good. The dumplings and wontons were even better. Service was attentive and well paced. Small space but nice. We’ll return
The food at Onsen was amazing. They took well-known dishes and added an interesting flavor twist to everything. The decor was beautiful, I really loved the hanging origami birds. We will definitely be eating there again.
A friend from NYC was in town and I always wanted to give this a try. Definitely do the soak before dinner (hour and a half before) as you’ll be “blissed out” during and super calm. Food was a little pricey for the portion but was delicious and worth the cost. MUST do the wontons, we could’ve had a order per person.
Onsen is an exceptional find in the heart of the tenderloin. A true gem. This one of a kind restaurant offers everything that one can expect in an eclectic Japanese setting. And the food is delicious. I also enjoyed the sake flight.
Great experience. We enjoyed the baths and dinner, both of which were outstanding.
Onsen is the perfect place to unwind at the end of a busy day or week with a group of friends or a special someone. I highly recommend you check it out. We went after work on a Friday and made 6:15pm reservations for the spa and 8:00pm dinner reservations. The food, service and spa were all impeccable.
some of the most authentic japanese food i’ve had in sf.
Decent restaurant in a bad neighborhood (Tenderloin). We walked from Union Square along Eddy Street, which we would not recommend. Take a cab or Uber or drive!
Highly recommend dinner and a soak for a special occasion!!
The food was incredible and the overall experience was exceptional. Highly recommend.
overall is good, but bathroom is small, there were over 10 people when we were there. Space is compact and little noisy. Bathroom is beautiful and steam room sauna room are great.
quality has gone down from my last visit. all foods were over-salted and the price is not justifiable for what you get. chawamoshi is just steam eggs. $13 each. despite that we ordered almost everything on the menu because we were hungry.
The food at Onsen is so exquisite and thoughtful - and the drinks and cocktails compliment it all beautifully. I love the baths and the restaurant, but if you only have time for one -- go for the food, it's really special. If only the location didn't drag you through the dregs of humanity to get to the front door.
So great to have a traditional-style Japanese bath house in the City. Loved the food too. Better than what I was expecting. Excellent sake list.
Everything was fantastic! The food was beyond our expectations and the service was great
Real, leave it at that.
Perfect dinner. Very Nice service. Even with three children who were expecting regular sushi and maki, they loved it very much. I can highly recommend this restaurant !!
Good not great food, reasonably priced. Trout appetizer was the highlight. Chicken wantons were cold when they should have been served hot.
Most delicious food. Had the dumplings and Gyozo. Out of this world delicious! Amazing service and ambiance. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes.
