Onsen's modern Norcal Japanese interior design and sharable Japanese inspired dishes make an ideal choice for a date, a friends gathering, or for group outings.
The restaurant offers the Noka dining room, featuring a family-style shareable dinner for 6 to 12 guests.
For reservations larger than 6 or to learn more information about events please call us at (415) 441-4987 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Onsen is a communal bathhouse as well, please visit our website www.onsensf.com or give us a call to reserve a soak before or after your dinner.
A friend from NYC was in town and I always wanted to give this a try. Definitely do the soak before dinner (hour and a half before) as you’ll be “blissed out” during and super calm. Food was a little pricey for the portion but was delicious and worth the cost. MUST do the wontons, we could’ve had a order per person.
Onsen is an exceptional find in the heart of the tenderloin. A true gem. This one of a kind restaurant offers everything that one can expect in an eclectic Japanese setting. And the food is delicious. I also enjoyed the sake flight.
Great experience. We enjoyed the baths and dinner, both of which were outstanding.
Onsen is the perfect place to unwind at the end of a busy day or week with a group of friends or a special someone. I highly recommend you check it out. We went after work on a Friday and made 6:15pm reservations for the spa and 8:00pm dinner reservations. The food, service and spa were all impeccable.
some of the most authentic japanese food i’ve had in sf.
Decent restaurant in a bad neighborhood (Tenderloin). We walked from Union Square along Eddy Street, which we would not recommend. Take a cab or Uber or drive!
Highly recommend dinner and a soak for a special occasion!!
The food was incredible and the overall experience was exceptional. Highly recommend.
overall is good, but bathroom is small, there were over 10 people when we were there. Space is compact and little noisy. Bathroom is beautiful and steam room sauna room are great.
quality has gone down from my last visit. all foods were over-salted and the price is not justifiable for what you get. chawamoshi is just steam eggs. $13 each. despite that we ordered almost everything on the menu because we were hungry.
The food at Onsen is so exquisite and thoughtful - and the drinks and cocktails compliment it all beautifully. I love the baths and the restaurant, but if you only have time for one -- go for the food, it's really special. If only the location didn't drag you through the dregs of humanity to get to the front door.
So great to have a traditional-style Japanese bath house in the City. Loved the food too. Better than what I was expecting. Excellent sake list.
Everything was fantastic! The food was beyond our expectations and the service was great
Real, leave it at that.
Perfect dinner. Very Nice service. Even with three children who were expecting regular sushi and maki, they loved it very much. I can highly recommend this restaurant !!
Good not great food, reasonably priced. Trout appetizer was the highlight. Chicken wantons were cold when they should have been served hot.
Most delicious food. Had the dumplings and Gyozo. Out of this world delicious! Amazing service and ambiance. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes.
Lovely spot, super chic but busier than I would have wanted on a Friday evening.
Did the spa and then had dinner - it was honestly such a treat. It really feels like you're a world away when you're in the spa and the meal after was really delicious. The foods were fresh and the service attentive. We took advantage of the sake tastings and really enjoyed ourselves. I found the meal to be a very good value.
Very nice atmoshpere, feels like Japan in San Francisco, great food, absurd location in the middle of all homeless.
One of our favorite date spots! The food is incredible, and the baths are super relaxing.
Came here for date night. What's better than a bite to eat followed by a soak? The foods presentation was amazing but lacked flavor and balance. The service was awesome and he made everything fun. I was actually taken off guard by the cider. Who knew a Japanese bath house would have the best Spanish cider I've ever had? The soak was wonderful but the steam and sauna were too hot. I'd return for movie night or just a soak.
Good food Good Service
Yakitori (grilled chicken on stick) was awful. The sauce overpowered the meat and could even taste the meat at all. Also the waiter/waitress didn't know what shichimi (hot pepper) was in a Japanese restaurant and also didn't know the difference between shichimi and sansho (chinese pepper). Everything was overpriced and there wasn't a variety of food on the menu. The architect did a great job but the food was so disappointing. I might go to place next time to try the onsen (hot bath) but would never go to eat again.
Loved the bathhouse. Was able to relax completely. Deep hot pool, eucalyptus/tea tree steam room, deliciously hot sauna, and cold shower. Peaceful ambiance. Well thought out meal. It was a deeply centering and intimate experience.
Incredible seasonal menu and delicious, inventive dishes! Would come again and have already recommended it to multiple friends! :)
Great small intimate space for dinner. Highly recommend doing the bathhouse then going to dinner!
Eat here! Never disappointed, we eat here every time we visit San Francisco. If you are put off by the location take an Uber/taxi.
Food and drinks are really good. It's even better when it is paired with the bath after.
Not my type of food. I'm not very adventuresome , so was disappointed in menu.
Our server wasn't very helpful with descriptions. It was a birthday dinner for me chosen by others.
Cute, intimate restaurant in the Tenderloin. There are only about 6 tables of 2-4 seats and some counter seating. Making reservations in advance is a must! Menu changes regularly with a few staple dishes. Many of the dishes have a unique twist to them, which I enjoyed. My favorite dishes were the Smoked Trout Crispy Rice and the Chilled Somen Noodles. Service was friendly, but they tried to charge us for two beers we didn't order...make sure to double check your receipt is correct!
Visiting Onsen is always a wonderful experience for me and guest. From the relaxing bathhouse soaking session to dinner with delicious, beautifully presented dishes. I’ve been going at least once a year ever since their grand opening week. I’m very pleased with the evolution of the interiors & ambiance and the consistent quality of Chef George. This is a business I often tell my friends and colleagues to visit because it’s a favorite of mine.
really great gem tucked into a not so pretty part of SF.
It was such a really good dinner after the spa. Highly recommend!
Food was fantastic and overall a very enjoyable experience!
Most dishes were spot on, but a couple weren’t great. Avoid the ramen. The quail was super flavorful in the ramen but the broth was a bit thin. Service was excellent
Great food , and great sake
Loved everything about our experience here. The spa was very intimate and calming. The food was incredible. Portions were very small for the price but still very good. Chocolate cake was a great way to end our afternoon.
Onsen is truly spectacular. The food was like a symphony in my mouth. I think I repeatedly told the wait staff that it was the best food I've ever eaten and I'm a self-proclaimed foodie. Additionally, I had not been able to eat Japanese food in the past year since gaining of a severe Shellfish allergy. The staff at Onsen were so incredibly accommodating with the allergy and I was able to eat almost everything on the menu. It was such a dream to be able to eat Japanese food again. We ended up ordering almost the entire menu and was blown away course after course. Between the kind team working at the restaurant, the melt-in-your mouth food, and the ambiance, I would recommend this restaurant to everyone and anyone. In fact, immediately after dining, my significant other and I called my parents to let them know they NEEDED to check this place out. Do yourself a favor, if you're looking for a special evening, go to Onsen. You will NOT be disappointed.
