About

Olmsted offers an approachable, seasonal New American menu from Chef Greg Baxtrom (formerly of Alinea, Atera and Blue Hill Stone Barns) and partner Ian Rothman, former horticulturist at Atera. The intimate eatery is rich with wood detailing and features white brick walls, a chef’s counter and a lush backyard garden with seating where it grows fresh ingredients for the kitchen.

It's been a year since we dined at the Olmstead and to this day we still talk about how it was the worst dining experience we've ever had! We called ahead to see if they had vegan options for their Thanksgiving dinner and they said they absolutely could provide vegan options for the multi-course Thanksgiving meal. What my husband (the vegan) wound up getting was literally a single slice of burnt sweet potato and THAT WAS IT, aside from a fruit platter that was- I kid you not- made of up canned mandarin oranges! It was almost laughable. While the rest of the family was eating multiple courses (which were generally under-flavored and overpriced), he had a single plate of one slice of sweet potato and a bowl of canned mandarin oranges. The staff was also pretty stuck up and did not seem apologetic. To this day it was one of the worst meals we've had and will likely be an annually revisited holiday tragedy for the next decade. If you're a vegetarian or vegan, I cannot recommend this place unless you want a tragic story to revisit every year.

DO NOT GO IF YOU ARE A VEGAN, VEGETARIAN OR PESCATARIAN. Literally one of the worst meals we have ever received. We paid for a multiple course dinner and the vegan and vegetarian had to sit most of the courses out. Of course, we were told before making our reservation the restaurant "absolutely could" accommodate a vegan and pescaratian. The vegan was literally served a slice of potato on a plate (that was it!) and for dessert a "fruit platter" which was a bowl of sliced apples ad canned mandarin oranges. The pescatarian didn't fare much better- a tiny piece of bland fish with mushy broccoli on top- nothing else. It was very insulting for the price. Meanwhile, the meat-eaters in our party had multiple courses and sides with their meals. Again, if you are a vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian stay far away from this place. Very disappointing.

Very innovative presentation. The menu has a decidedly Asian influence in the presentation and the method, but the ingredients were high quality organic and local. It was a nice, unusual twist and it worked well.

The room is very nice, the backyard is really lovely. Next time I'd like to go when the weather is a bit warmer and enjoy a drink in the garden.

The Mezcal cocktail was very very tasty. Wines were good - nice selection, some good unusual picks.

I am impressed with the quality and creativeness coming out of that small kitchen. Well done!

Delicious food. Nice waif staff. Almost satirically over the top presentation. Small portions. Excessive pretension. Basically a hipster joint.

The food was really delicious. We enjoyed the entrees more than the small plates and the appetizers. The portions were a bit small. The pork neck was perfectly cooke and delicious and the Tagliatelle made of rutabaga was amazing.

This hard to score reservation is well worth all the effort. Lovely warm indoor space and wonderful garden. Friendly helpful service. Wonderful innovative delicious reasonably priced food. Excellent wine selection at moderate prices. Specifically, the crackers, cauliflower and monkfish were amazing and be sure to try the Morgan's meats. Loved the carrot crepe and cod fritters. And the trout and pork were wonderful. But favorite of all was the "Tagliatelle "...simply devine! And save room for the s'mores out in the garden. In all, a perfect meal and evening out with dear friends!!

We were very pleased with our experience. The restaurant decor is beautiful. The plating is beautiful. The food is very good but perhaps not as great as some reviews would have you believe. The carrot crepe, which put the restaurant on the mark according to our waiter, was good but not great--but for the calms, which added a nice, salty component. Otherwise, the flavor wasn't sharp enough. The crawfish boil crackers tasted as described, like cajun pork rinds. The tagliatelle was our favorite. We could have licked the plate, the sauce was so good. The pasta had a nice slight crunch.

Consistently good food. Been here three times and have had to wait months to get a reservation. The smores dessert option to be enjoyed back in their garden/waiting area was a fun experience. Excellent service and food...but, I also doubt I will wait again that long to come back.

Was a little nervous about the menu as I am a vegetarian who happens to also be very picky! We mentioned this to our waitress who immediately let us know all the items they could change and make vegetarian! Instead of making a dish and removing the meat they clearly thought about how to make the dishes vegetarian while still delicious. Very much appreciated the flexibility of the kitchen and the great staff. Make a reservation in advance as it fills up fast!

We loved the food - they're relatively vegetarian friendly (just ask - a few of the menu items can be made veggie). Great cocktails & wine list. Spending time in the backyard is a must! When you finish your meal, ask to sit outside for an after dinner drink & dessert. It's complete with blankets and heaters even if it's a bit chilly out.

A bit over hyped after a 2 month wait to get a reservation. The trout was a bit cold and would have been nice with a small side. The rosemary drink was great!

Two members of our party had a last minute emergency, but it wasn't an issue and we got relocated to the chefs counter, which was a lucky break for us. Food was, unsurprisingly, incredible. I was particularly impressed with the wine selection which really focusses on lower price but very interesting bottles. I can't wait for an opportunity to go back and try the few things we didn't get through on the menu.

The wait times were painfully long. Our server was a somewhat abrupt and rude- the wine he recommended was underwhelming and overpriced. Fortunately the food was worth it.

What a wonderful meal. Two friends and I dined at Olmsted this past week and couldn't possibly have been any happier. From start to finish, we were treated exceptionally well by the team, enjoying a wonderful bottle of wine recommended by our server, and enjoying one of almost everything on the menu. Chef Baxtrom and his team have done a wonderful thing at Olmsted, bringing creative, incredibly tasty and beautiful dishes to a laid back dining room and at a very reasonable price. I can't wait to go back for the spring menu, which the chef was working on as we made our exit late in the evening. Restaurants like this are why I drive from northern NJ to Prospect Park on a Wednesday night after 12 hours of work, and they (especially this one) are really special when they deliver. If you can, get there before the menus change over and try the rutabaga tagiatelle, it is mind blowing!!!!

Made the reservation two months in advance and the food was well worth the wait. Service was attentive without being overbearing and food was relatively quick. Decent selection of wines by the glass but even more impressive is the most expensive glass is only $14.

We had an excellent experience at Olmsted! At first we were a little disappointed because they say us at the Chef's Bar and my Open Table selection was for standard seating. But they cleared it up quickly and we didn't have to wait too long. Overall it was an excellent experience.

We came away from our meal at Olmsted completely pleased by the level of food and service. The restaurant offers an incredible value, considering the quality of the ingredients and the cooking techniques on display. We loved everything we ate -- the duck, uni pierogies, crawfish crackers, chawanmushi, scallops, frozen yogurt. We'll definitely be back -- although getting a reservation is tough at this popular and delightful restaurant!

Olmstead is a restaurant that opened in summer 2016 in Prospect Heights Brooklyn. It is a very popular restaurant with a young hop vibe.
The food is fantastic and very approachable. I love the take on great flavor combos. I had the amazing butternut squash soup, the carrot crape, the short rib, the trout and yougart for dessert.
My advice make reservations. You will not be disappointed.

Great meal, four ladies we basically ordered and enjoyed the entire menu. It was worth every calorie. We were guided to two nice, fairly priced bottles of wine, I always appreciate that.
I can't wait to go again ... hopefully Max will find me a nice table.

One of the best values you'll find in New York City, definitely try out this restaurant. That is, if you can get in. My boyfriend and I shared four full courses and a cocktail each, all for less than $100 total. A carrot crepe was flavorful, while the cauliflower was forgettable. The winning dish was a salty and rich, brown butter-soaked "tagliatelle," actually made from shaved rutabaga. And for dessert, we savored the frozen yogurt topped with a whipped lavender honey. All-white except for a few violet petals, it's a study in contrasts: warm, sweet honey against cold, tart yogurt. Once the crowds die down, I'll be envious of neighbors: It's sure to be a Prospect Heights institution for years to come.
