Oliveto Café & Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Everything would’ve earned at least four stars , but my entree, a pork chop, was inedible. For the first time in my life I had to send food back to the kitchen. It was thick and quite literally rock hard all the way through, every bit of moisture gone. Sending it back, I changed my order to the soup (very good) but by the time that arrived, my companions were nearly done . It would’ve been a bit better had there been an apology from the kitchen, but that didn’t happen. My companions had never been to the restaurant before and it was meant to a treat. .. that said, it was lovely to eat where conversation did not mean having to shout. Outside of the rock hard pork chop, the other dishes were quite good. I’d liked to have been able to write a glowing review.
Wonderful winter meal with creative (but not “over the top”) dishes using best in-season ingredients. Service was attentive and informative. Appetizers included beautiful small plates (hot and cold) featuring well-pared flavors and textures. Engineered acoustics are fantastic, allowing comfortable conversations at every table while maintaining a lively vibe in the room!
We have dined at Oliveto many times, both at the casual cafe on the ground floor and the formal restaurant upstairs. Both are terrific. This evening we had dinner in the restaurant. The food, as always, was great and the service was attentive but unobtrusive. Our server was knowledgeable and charming. And it's right across the street from Rockridge BART! Love this place.
What a difference the wait staff makes! I have given a review of this place before, with high marks in all categories. We came recently for a special date night and made note of that where they ask why you are coming in. The food was excellent, as it always has been at Olivetos when we have come in. But the waiter, Kaitlyn, was almost non verbal, looked like she was bored or otherwise not wanting to be there, and did not check on us as is usually the case there. We saw her going to tables around us, but she was not really attending to us at all during the duration of the meal. It affected our experience because we had to be vigilant to catch her when she was close by, and the biggest reason I am writing is that the tip is automatically 18% and is added to our bill. I would NOT have given her much of a tip, to show her how her service was. But did not have the chance. Hopefully she will see this or have it brought to her attention, and do better next time. Not with me, we will move to another table if its Kaitlyn that is in charge of our table. (ps I am not usually so particular or snotty, but that was ridiculous and noteworthy).
The food on this occasion was really lovely. We really appreciate their sound atmosphere i.e. the dining room is sound engineered so that even when they are full to capacity, you can carry on a conversation easily. We have eaten here on and off over the years ever since the Paul Bertolli days, and at times have been disappointed with some dishes. But this evening everything was excellent. Service is attentive but not intrusive. We are already booked to return with friends.
The New Year's Eve dinner was less than we have come to expect from Oliveto's. We had a 6:15 seating; it was busy, but not overly so. Service was poor, we were not offered a chance to order a cocktail, we had to ask for bread, and on one course, the meat was delivered but we had no utensils left on the table. We sat for several minutes before we could catch someone's attention. Food was ok, but not up to Oliveto's usual standards. Risotto was chalky, not creamy, hot courses were, at best, warm, and the dessert was uninspired. We'll be back based on prior experiences. Hopefully, they will have regained their footing.
Had not been to Oliveto upstairs in a few years. The dining room is beautiful and festive, warm, welcoming, and comfortable. Small but interesting cocktail menu, extensive wine menu with a range of prices, helpful waitstaff. The four of us tried each others' orders, and loved the swordfish, the shaved brussels sprouts salad, the creamy and savory tajarin with mushroom ragu, the vegetarian kabocha entree. The desserts were just right and we got a kick out of the maple pudding with Dulcey pearls. A very enjoyable evening for four!
So disappointing! We have had our family Christmas Eve dinner upstairs at Oliveto for many years and have always loved the food and the festive ambiance. This year was such a different experience. Our server was extremely unfriendly, bordering on rude. The entire meal was a strange assortment of mistakes. My chicory salad was full of improperly cleaned produce and was gritty and inedible. The beef merguez sausage (at a fairly high price), was really not much more than a hot dog, and was served with hard, undercooked potatoes. The pear crostata was stale and flavorless. I think I would forgive the disappointing food if the service had been friendly and welcoming, but we were not treated well. We won't return to Oliveto.
Enjoyed our beautiful table near the bar. Food was delicious. The smoke pork chop was fantastic. Unfortunately we left with a bad feeling. Our waitress stopped my husband as he went to the bathroom and she commented to him that she knew we were celebrating a birthday, which he confirmed with her, she wanted to know who's birthday, he told her. And that was that -- birthday was never mentioned again -- very odd. We are unclear why she even asked.
I was pretty surprised and disappointed at how lacking in creativity and inspiration the food was at Olivetos. Given its reputation, it was a huge disappointment. The food was lacking in flavor (except for the dessert), and pretty much bland. The service was slow. I didn't feel any fun, creative energy or excitement reading the menu or eating the food. Very sad.
We have been regular customers for 20+ years, obviously loving it all the while.
Now the prices have become higher than the value of the plate and the wine list is completely unacceptable as far as pricing goes.
The service was good enough, but the young people have not been thoroughly trained, especially about wine and refinement of service.
The cover charge was the capper
Goodbye oliveto. Arrividerci
Service was offensive, went there for my birthday and was treated incredibly poorly. They miscounted our money and charged my friend 100 extra dollars on her card that she has yet to be refunded. For the amount of money I paid the overall experience was less than luster. Will not be going back. If I go to a nice restaurant for a special occasion and spend as much as I did I expect 5 star service and respect as opposed to the condescending nature I received from the manager who looked down on us because of our age.
Food is very good. Endive-crab salad was passable; the other dishes were all delightful. It's at the BART station. It has a special noise abatement system that works very well. Oliveto sounds and feels busy and bustling, yet you can talk to the person across the table without shouting. It's kind of expensive, so the crowd upstairs tends to be over 40. This cohort also appreciates the sound abatement, I'd suppose.
I would never come back here again because of the food quality, it was overpriced and just wasn't that good. We got a Brussels sprouts salad for appetizer and was surprised that how small the portion was and how the flavor was bland. I got the same impression from pasta and main dish: I got a sea urchin carbonara but could not taste sea urchin at all. It was just a mediocre carbonara and is not worth $21. Their desserts were better than appetizer and entree and the customer service was ok though.
We mostly had a very nice experience dining here.
We had eaten there three or four years ago and had an excellent experience. I don't know if the kitchen management changed between then and now but the apps and main courses were very small for the price tag. Sformatino of butternut squash, chestnuts, and delicata squash was particularly disappointing. It was barely big enough to call a light appetizer, yet was offered as "secundi"and had no flavor. Having said that all the other dishes were exceptional in flavor (just tiny portions).
I would still recommend it. The service was excellent and the food came out very timely without huge gaps between courses.
For no good reason we had not been to Oliveto for several years. We very much enjoyed the return. Very good food, and friendly and prompt service. We were warned that the dining room was on the second floor. What they didn't say on their website is that there is elevator access, although you need a staff member to use it. I could have made it up the stairs, but was happy to use the elevator.
Oliveto always offers good food, but the main reason we go there is for the terrific noise-cancelling sound system that allows us to enjoy conversation at a normal level--even when the restaurant is packed.
The lunch menu is a bit thin and on this last visit it seemed a little flat. Too many similar dishes with too few choices.
Service was ridiculously slow. It's a busy time of year, but even as the restaurant dramatically thinned out, our wait staff was gone for long periods of time, and what we had planned as an hour and 15 minutes dragged out to two hours.
