Oliveto Café & Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Have been to Olivetios for years. It’s my go to place for exceptional food, quite ambiance and excellent service. Shelly is a wonderful experienced hostess. The servings are smaller but what I want is quality of the pastas, appetizers and main dishes. Table cloths, carpet, muffled noise factor that makes for an enjoyable relaxing experience. Check out the menu and see what you think. It’s an older crowd that wants to talk and hear the conversation. Olivetios is the only place I know in Oakland that provides a diligence to fine food and wonderful experienced staff that makes it special.
Be aware when Oliveto's is serving one of their special dinners. If it's mushrooms, and you don't like mushrooms, don't go. Also be aware that they will not make substitutions. Don't like kale? All they will agree to do is take the kale off your plate. The service was slow and it was impossible to get the server's attention. She did not ask if one member of our party would like another beverage until after we'd been served the meal and we were half finished. She knew it was a birthday event, yet the service was still bad. There is no incentive to provide good service when a 20% gratuity is automatically added to the bill. The only reason I rated the food fair is because 1 out of 3 people was satisfied with their meal.
I started to write a review and it disappeared. I have been dining at Oliveto for about 15 years. I have watched the menu go from "exotic" which meant that I had difficulty finding dishes that appealed to me to diner friendly. I now thoroughly enjoy the menu and find almost all dishes to my taste. This time although the food was spectacular as usual, the service was abysmal. Our waiter apologized for the delay almost each time he came to the table. The initial delay upon seating was clearly his fault. The extra-long delay between starters and entre could only have been caused by failure to tell the kitchen to fire the dishes. Our servers name was Michael. I have NEVER (since the restaurant instituted the 18% add on) left only the 18% tip. This time we left 18% only because we understand that the staff relies upon that for their livelihood. I do expect to come back but not with Michael as our waiter.
Lovely atmosphere with attentive service. Food is distinctive. Do not expect to get American Italian or big plates of food. If I had a lot of money, this would be my go-to spot because the food is treated in a very thoughtful way. My husband's steak was delicious, and the bed it sat on was innovative and delicious as well. Great cocktails and wine.
I’d read the positive reviews about Oliveto and was excited to go. I made reservations for my anniversary, and noted this special occasion in my reservation.
The service was average/poor. Although everyone was very friendly, we didn’t feel attended to. We were seated next to a couple who arrived after we did and were served before we were. After every course, our plates remained on the table for 5-10 minutes as servers whizzed by us attending to other guests. Our server didn’t offer us dessert. The sommelier took our order, and provided us with the check. In fact we didn’t see our server again after he took my ice cold steak back to the kitchen and brought it back to me.
My husband and I were very disappointed with our experience here, especially on this special occasion.
There are very few good quality, well served, quiet restaurants for a business lunch meal. Olivetto cafe is located upstairs, it is not the bistro on the street level. The Cafe is very good for discussions on many levels, from incidental, to jokes, to serious business. It is also located with parking nearby and almost next to the Oakland Rockridge Bart station for easy access.
I suggested this place to my two women friends because I had eaten there the night before with my husband and another couple. But the same waiter who was so gracious and friendly when we were two couples was distinctly bored and perfunctory when it was just us women. He was MIA, sending out a parade of confused kitchen help to struggle with finding the right table for our dishes. There is an 18% service charge built in, and you feel it. The whole experience was distinctly unpleasant.
This was my first time at Oliveto and overall it was very good. Our waiter was wonderful and the service was excellent. He was kind and informative, and every course of our food was ready very quickly. The room is very pretty and the insulated walls and ceilings make the acoustics very good here. There is a comfortable hum (it's not strangely or oddly quiet) but you can have a conversation which is SO hard at most restaurants!
Our food was overall very good, though there were some misses. Our salad was delicious, however of our 3 pastas only one was what I would call excellent. One was a little plain and a second one was overly salty. Not inedible - just not amazing. We had two desserts though, and those were both delicious. The pumpkin cake was so good (and it's the owner's own recipe) that we asked for and got a copy and plan to make it!
Well crafted dishes overall. Vegetarian main dish sformatino was underwhelming though the chèvre fonduta sauce was nice. Missing another element of texture density and complexity. Something else with more substance was needed... Beef Tatar like appetizer dish "cruda?" with persimmon purée was delicious as was the bread. Crab app bright but a little too lemony and tiny. Husband's fish was excellent though slightly on the overcooked but great crispy skin side sear. Pasta dish spaghetti neri with shrimp was tasty but when served in such tiny portion as a secundi it loses that pasta warmth and satisfaction. Desserts simple and elegant. Lovely timeless ambience. Service surprisingly slow and inattentive for high end restaurant. Nice servers but not the level of attention one would expect for ~$125 per person. Not what I remembered from prior ~5-6 visits in the past.
One of the guests wanted to order a dish from the down stairs menu and was told NO. A good restaurant would have made that happen. As 3 of us were from S Calif I guess it really does not matter. When I do come back to N Calif I would not eat here though.
I have dined there at least 20 times, and this was the first disappointing meal I have experienced there. We were three people with two of us sharing three items. Our server was unable to remember who the sharers were every time he delivered a plate. In addition, we ordered two beef entries, one rare and one medium rare. He got these wrong, too.
Oliveto Restaurant and Bar always provides a sophisticated dining experience which is unique in East Bay Restaurants. As much as there is very good food in the East Bay, there is very little elegance to go with it. Bravo Oliveto for serving gourmet cuisine in elegant surroundings!
First time at Oliveto, but lunch was indeed very nice upstairs, pasta and cod just delicious, everyone else appeared to be enjoying the succulent pork chop so will have to order that next time. Service very professional, maybe too serious but that's cool, this restaurant is solid!
What a huge disappoint. Food was decent but nothing outstanding given all the great places to eat in the East Bay. Service was atrocious. No one approached us for 20 minutes. Throughout the evening he wouldn’t make eye contact with me. It was like our table was invisible. Just inexcusable. We will not go back.
I have been in Oliveto's many times over the years, and have always considered it to be a restaurant for special occasions.
It was the place where we had dinner with my wife before my daughter came in the world ( immediately after!) and in this weekend, 19 years later, I took my family there for the Parents weekend in Cal.
I was disappointed with the experience. Despite the excellent tasty dishes, we had terrible inattentive service. In addition we found a hair in one of our salads and had to send it back .
The way this was handled was inappropriate despite that these things happen.
Not only they charged me for this, but also added a mandatory 18% tip for a party of 4!!
The other things that went wrong were: Small portions, even for Primi charged for full portion lack of attention on serving the deserts. Luke warm Hot chocolate.
I did not make a fuss for either, because I did not want to sour the occasion for the others.
This is the last time I, or my family will dine there!
Food Great. Service not so great. We enjoyed a delicious lunch this week at Oliveto. Great to have a place to go that is conducive to conversation. All the dishes --soup, salads, and pastas were wonderful--just perfectly spiced to our liking. They must have had a 'no show' among the waitstaff, and the personnel shortage resulted in lousy service. This hasn't happened before at Oliveto, so it won't deter us from continuing to be a frequent customer.
our lunch was lovely. the cantaloupe soup was amazing. great flavor. other melons were blended in as well and it was lovely. salad was nice and crips and not overdressed. bread was warm and crisp like bread should be. cod was delightful. cooked very very well. tea was yummy. loose leaf!! service was very on spot, not too intrusive. manager came by to say hello.
We arrived ten minutes early for an 11:30 reservation . The manager confronted us in an unfriendly manner, objecting to our intention to sit down at the table and talk while waiting for the menus, water, etc. She came back several times with a scowl on her face and was overall hostile throughout the entire afternoon. Maybe she was having a bad day and it was nothing personal, but it gave a very bad impression that I've never experienced before as a patron for more than fifteen years.
Beautiful menu, lots of great suggestions from wait staff who know about the food being served. I love this place for a lovely, special dining experience to celebrate! Have always had great things to say about the food, specialness and celebration being observed. I have taken family, friends, older kids and business partners and its always been appropriate for all.
They do a good job with quieting the place, even though it is in a busy part of college avenue/Berkeley. Coffee house below is a hot spot for drinks and date night--
We generally enjoy the food at Oliveto, so that was no surprise. But the service was particularly good this time. Really excellent wine recommendation that blended with all the disparate dishes we were sharing. And they didn't flinch when we ordered pastas as our "dessert" course, even though the kitchen was trying to close. That was super nice.
