Oliveto Café & Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The flavors and presentation were world class. However, of the 4 dishes served, the meat on 3 of them (2 were beef, 1 was rabbit) was barely lukewarm. And for the price (18 for pasta, 27 for angus beef, 28 for rabbit), the portions were ridiculously small. The huge stuffed pepper on the rabbit plate was truly excellent and large enough to compensate for the 4 small slices of rabbit. The other 3 diners at the table were not so fortunate and left wanting more food (we got large desserts elsewhere after our theater engagement).
The menu at the Restaurant is unique since it changes weekly depending on what is in season. We attended the Atlantic seafood dining experience and it was not only fun to try new seafood, but it was all delicious. I'm sure the Cafe is delicious as well, without the higher prices.
Had the Mid-Atlantic seafood dinner. Quality of seafood was good and prepared well. A slightly lighter touch with the salt on a few dishes might have worked better. Service was not rushed (Thu 8pm) and we were able to spend a leisurely evening enjoying a tasty meal and good conversation with good friends.
Since Bob Klein hired Jonah to replace Paul Canales there has been a giant change in attitude and the food. The recent dinner was an Eastern Seafood special and for four days they cook lovely fare. Lobster rolls, Frito of Soft Shell Crab, pasta with scallops and a tajarin with lobster that was ethereal. The fish entrees were also good and the wine excellent as was the service. A *** meal and restaurant, once again. Takes one back to Paul Bertoli.
Service was very good, after we were ignored for the first 15 minutes. It was explained to us that this resulted from a mixup in waitstaff assigents, but that doesn't explain why the owner and maitre d' (both of whom were present) did not spot something amiss. Food was outstanding, as usual.
Three of us had the sand dabs. It was a pathetically small portion. They were well prepared and very tasty, but there wasn't much to eat. A few tasty bites for a $27 entree. The chocolate cake dessert and fruit tart were excellent and decent sized.
The service was alright. They were very efficient at repeatedly offering to clear our empty plates from the table. They gave us a tiny portion and then kept trying to take two of the three plates away before everyone was finished.
If cost is no object and you order a lot of dishes, you'd probably like this place. I won't return.
Arriving at Oliveto, we were greeted by three models who were not overly welcoming but at the same time not dismissive. We had reservations and even though we were 15 minutes early (we had planned to get drinks) we were seated immediately. Our table upstairs, despite a half empty room, was wedged in a corner over the stairwell entrance. This was made worse when a group of five was seated in the round table next to us, really making the ambiance less than romantic. Our waitress was very attentive, welcoming, and friendly. The food was very good, but frankly overpriced for the quality. Presentation was very good. Overall the quality and atmosphere, while very good, don't justify the hefty price.
Asked doe quiet table for 2 and got it. Wonderful tastes and others appeared very happy with their choices as well. Regular portion is called "moderate" and probably smallest size entree' I ever had. Same with my wife's order. For $5.00 more one can order a larger size, which apparently a tad more generous. Why not charge $2.00 or more and compromise with a reasonably moderate portion? Hmmm. Kind of gimmicky. We had salads first, bread was great, wine a little spendy by the glass. Restaurant is upstairs, linen draped tables; downstairs is same menu in a Cafe setting. Reservations only taken for the restaurant. Nicely dressed crowd--no backwards (or forward facing) baseball caps. Overall fine place and we will return.
Olivetto's was outstanding! It was my husbands birthday and I provided specific instructions through OpenTable which were followed to the T, making it a very special evening. The food was absolutely divine. The salad was lightly dressed allowing you to enjoy the taste of the food not the dressing, the ravioli was fresh and cooked to perfection, and the vitello was simply out of this world. Thank you Olivetto!
My husband and I go to Oliveto's when we have a special occasion to celebrate. This time we went for our anniversary. It has been some time since we had been there (over one year) and were disappointed in the limitations of the menu. Many pasta dishes, but what disappointed us the most was that the menu had a lot of dishes featuring "game", i.e., rabbit, hen, etc. which does not interest us. There was one salmon offer which, again, was served with an eggplant puree that did not appeal to either of us. So, we each chose a pasta dish. The good news is that the pasta itself was absolutely delicious. I had a dish with scallops that were delicate and flavorful. My husband's dish was a big disappointment...it was thin pasta noodles with mushrooms
While the food at Oliveto's is quite good, for those who have been there often, it is beginning to feel tired. The menu is consistent but the food no longer seems cooked with passion, as it used to be.
Perhaps this is too picky, but that's what happens with restaurants that set so high a bar-it becomes more difficult to maintain.
My wife and I had pigeon and rabbit... the pigeon was exceptional (even at $31), the rabbit was... meh... Amazing wine list (if you like Italian wines). At $100/head with a bottle of wine, you can't do it every day, but it's worth a few trips per year to check in on the menu.
Everything was wonderful. Food and service were excellent. My only criticism is that the wine list did not reflect enough California products. Bringing a friend there from the east coast who wanted to taste some interesting California wines left us both wanting!
I've eaten there several times before and was always thrilled. This time I was quite disappointed. The salad dressing was so salty as to be almost inedible. My pork chop was a bit overcooked and otherwise quite dull. The three grilled asparagus were overcooked, and the bean puree also dull. My companion's beef was tough and didn't offer much flavor.
it's an elegant room, relatively quiet, and the service was excellent. Perhaps it was just an off night in the kitchen, but it's an expensive enough place that there shouldn't be off nights
Maybe it was an off night in the kitchen but this was not up to par. Flavors were just not there - the prep was not stellar. The special cocktail with Vodka and grape juice was delish....but lets face it, you go to Oliveto for the food not the cocktail. The dessert was even not up to snuff....disappointed.
Oliveto has been one of our top favorites for years--we go from 2 to 4 times a year for an all out special meal and never minded spending big bucks. This time, however, was a real disaster. We waited at least 25 minutes to receive bread, 30 minutes to have our order for wine taken, and 45 minutes to take our food order. The appetizers may have taken another 40 minutes to come--so long that two tables near us had come and gone, new diners were seated, and they were served their appetizers before us! My husband's porcetta appeared to be a good size serving, but once he started to eat it, found it to be arout 3 ounces of pork and about 12 ounces of fat, which he had to leave unappealingly on his plate until they took it away. Disappointing.
The food was excellent. The dishes were very well prepared and the presentations were well done. The rabbit really tasted like it had been spit roasted. Oliveto is rightly known for its cuisine, but the waits between courses were much too long. The waiter was attentive and the serving excellent. But the tables are quite close together and the noise level was very high on a Friday evening. It was difficult to talk and I like to be able to have a conversation with my friends.
