Oliveto Café & Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We used to love coming to Oliveto. Unfortunately over the last couple of years, both the service and food has disappointed. Service was slow, unfriendly and cold. Our waiter at Fentons (where we opted for dessert) was way better! Also the food quality was pretty mediocre and no longer merits the prices they charge. When did they start charging for bread?!
A wonderful place for a special get-together with friends or a special date. The menu choices were nicely varied and those dishes we ordered were outstanding. Also, the bread is to die for! Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. A great night overall.
I have been here before. This time was a bit disappointing. The soup was delicious. The gnocchi were heavy. Since they make their own pasta, it should have been light as a feather.
Given it has been special in the past, I would try again. It is a lovely environment
For me, it is one of the best Italian restaurants in the Bay Area. The pasta dishes are just wonderful. They are unique and extraordinary. The wine list is very good especially
the brunello and rosso di montalcino. It is pricey but reasonable and worth the money.
I recommend the spaghetti neri.
Beautiful experience from beginning to end. Lovely atmosphere, quiet and nice mood set by lighting. We come to Olivertos when we want to have a date (after 43 years married-haha!) or have a special occasion. Food is uniquely presented and always good. You will not be disappointed! Have also come for lunch, equally good in all ways, but dinner is the time they shine.
Just walking up the stairs you knew you were in for an experience. We sat at a window table that overlooked the hustling streets below. We were greeted by our waiter graciously and the evening began with the owner Maggie bringing us the menus hot off the press. We started with two glasses of sparkling rose and beef crudo with castleventrano olives, mint, and persimmons. Next was the most silky smooth cauliflower soup that I ever had with pine nuts and raisins garnished around the bowl. The fried brussel sprouts were not to be missed and we took our waiters word on it. We finished with the ricotta cheese raviolo with brown butter and sage. To top it all off we had the pumpkin spice cake to make this a truly seasonal four course meal. I highly recommend dining here and can't wait to come back. Thank you!!!
This restaurant was once really great but now is just ok. My pasta was almost cold and my husband's chicken was ok. None of our dishes was excellent. We asked that our guest's dessert was identifiable as a birthday dish - after four tries it received a candle. Disappointing.
Worst service at a Bay Area restaurant in years. Waiter was surly. Ordered 5 courses and told waiter my wife and I would be sharing. The courses came at the same time, not coursed out. No share plates. Although the couple at the next table was sharing and had share plates. One of the dishes we ordered was raviolo with duck sugo. What we were served was a tortelloni with brown butter, sage, and basalmic. I mentioned it to the waiter and he looked me straight in the eye and said we did get the duck sugo, but the duck was so cooked down we probably didn't notice it. Also, when serving, he did not tell us the dish name or components (a nicety I've come to expect from fine restaurants). Finally, when he took my card for payment, he told me it was declined. I was bewildered, but gave him another one, which he also claimed was declined. I checked both accounts quickly on my phone, worried about identity fraud. They were both fine. Finally, he took a third card and called it in over the phone. Awful. Even when I worked retail, the machine often behaved funny. We always tactfully suggested that maybe a different card would work. Not claim it was declined. A very unpleasant experience all aroubd. Too bad, I'd high hopes for this old classic restaurant. But I think it's resting on its laurels.
Have been to Olivetios for years. It’s my go to place for exceptional food, quite ambiance and excellent service. Shelly is a wonderful experienced hostess. The servings are smaller but what I want is quality of the pastas, appetizers and main dishes. Table cloths, carpet, muffled noise factor that makes for an enjoyable relaxing experience. Check out the menu and see what you think. It’s an older crowd that wants to talk and hear the conversation. Olivetios is the only place I know in Oakland that provides a diligence to fine food and wonderful experienced staff that makes it special.
Be aware when Oliveto's is serving one of their special dinners. If it's mushrooms, and you don't like mushrooms, don't go. Also be aware that they will not make substitutions. Don't like kale? All they will agree to do is take the kale off your plate. The service was slow and it was impossible to get the server's attention. She did not ask if one member of our party would like another beverage until after we'd been served the meal and we were half finished. She knew it was a birthday event, yet the service was still bad. There is no incentive to provide good service when a 20% gratuity is automatically added to the bill. The only reason I rated the food fair is because 1 out of 3 people was satisfied with their meal.
I started to write a review and it disappeared. I have been dining at Oliveto for about 15 years. I have watched the menu go from "exotic" which meant that I had difficulty finding dishes that appealed to me to diner friendly. I now thoroughly enjoy the menu and find almost all dishes to my taste. This time although the food was spectacular as usual, the service was abysmal. Our waiter apologized for the delay almost each time he came to the table. The initial delay upon seating was clearly his fault. The extra-long delay between starters and entre could only have been caused by failure to tell the kitchen to fire the dishes. Our servers name was Michael. I have NEVER (since the restaurant instituted the 18% add on) left only the 18% tip. This time we left 18% only because we understand that the staff relies upon that for their livelihood. I do expect to come back but not with Michael as our waiter.
Lovely atmosphere with attentive service. Food is distinctive. Do not expect to get American Italian or big plates of food. If I had a lot of money, this would be my go-to spot because the food is treated in a very thoughtful way. My husband's steak was delicious, and the bed it sat on was innovative and delicious as well. Great cocktails and wine.
I’d read the positive reviews about Oliveto and was excited to go. I made reservations for my anniversary, and noted this special occasion in my reservation.
The service was average/poor. Although everyone was very friendly, we didn’t feel attended to. We were seated next to a couple who arrived after we did and were served before we were. After every course, our plates remained on the table for 5-10 minutes as servers whizzed by us attending to other guests. Our server didn’t offer us dessert. The sommelier took our order, and provided us with the check. In fact we didn’t see our server again after he took my ice cold steak back to the kitchen and brought it back to me.
My husband and I were very disappointed with our experience here, especially on this special occasion.
There are very few good quality, well served, quiet restaurants for a business lunch meal. Olivetto cafe is located upstairs, it is not the bistro on the street level. The Cafe is very good for discussions on many levels, from incidental, to jokes, to serious business. It is also located with parking nearby and almost next to the Oakland Rockridge Bart station for easy access.
I suggested this place to my two women friends because I had eaten there the night before with my husband and another couple. But the same waiter who was so gracious and friendly when we were two couples was distinctly bored and perfunctory when it was just us women. He was MIA, sending out a parade of confused kitchen help to struggle with finding the right table for our dishes. There is an 18% service charge built in, and you feel it. The whole experience was distinctly unpleasant.
This was my first time at Oliveto and overall it was very good. Our waiter was wonderful and the service was excellent. He was kind and informative, and every course of our food was ready very quickly. The room is very pretty and the insulated walls and ceilings make the acoustics very good here. There is a comfortable hum (it's not strangely or oddly quiet) but you can have a conversation which is SO hard at most restaurants!
Our food was overall very good, though there were some misses. Our salad was delicious, however of our 3 pastas only one was what I would call excellent. One was a little plain and a second one was overly salty. Not inedible - just not amazing. We had two desserts though, and those were both delicious. The pumpkin cake was so good (and it's the owner's own recipe) that we asked for and got a copy and plan to make it!
Well crafted dishes overall. Vegetarian main dish sformatino was underwhelming though the chèvre fonduta sauce was nice. Missing another element of texture density and complexity. Something else with more substance was needed... Beef Tatar like appetizer dish "cruda?" with persimmon purée was delicious as was the bread. Crab app bright but a little too lemony and tiny. Husband's fish was excellent though slightly on the overcooked but great crispy skin side sear. Pasta dish spaghetti neri with shrimp was tasty but when served in such tiny portion as a secundi it loses that pasta warmth and satisfaction. Desserts simple and elegant. Lovely timeless ambience. Service surprisingly slow and inattentive for high end restaurant. Nice servers but not the level of attention one would expect for ~$125 per person. Not what I remembered from prior ~5-6 visits in the past.
One of the guests wanted to order a dish from the down stairs menu and was told NO. A good restaurant would have made that happen. As 3 of us were from S Calif I guess it really does not matter. When I do come back to N Calif I would not eat here though.
I have dined there at least 20 times, and this was the first disappointing meal I have experienced there. We were three people with two of us sharing three items. Our server was unable to remember who the sharers were every time he delivered a plate. In addition, we ordered two beef entries, one rare and one medium rare. He got these wrong, too.
Oliveto Restaurant and Bar always provides a sophisticated dining experience which is unique in East Bay Restaurants. As much as there is very good food in the East Bay, there is very little elegance to go with it. Bravo Oliveto for serving gourmet cuisine in elegant surroundings!
First time at Oliveto, but lunch was indeed very nice upstairs, pasta and cod just delicious, everyone else appeared to be enjoying the succulent pork chop so will have to order that next time. Service very professional, maybe too serious but that's cool, this restaurant is solid!
