Shane was a great waiter he was very attentive and even though he was obviously busy he still did great and made sure to keep up with our needs. He has a great sense of humor and definitely will be back.
Good to be back! Expected more space between tables. Entrees were good except for wild rice with mine- tasteless cardboard. Very good service.
I forgot there are not many non-meat choices. Unusual for an Italian restaurant.
Lovely evening. Perfect outside dining ambiance with yummy food, well prepared, and good drinks, served quickly and with grace.
Oliveto has returned stronger than ever. The food was outstanding, presentation very tempting, the service was friendly, the manager on top of things that might go wrong like the computer going down, very enjoyable evening.
Prices seem higher, portions smaller, and there's no more olive bread...but happy to be back upstairs.
My partner and I are vegetarian. If you are vegetarian I would not recommend this restaurant. There were little options and even small portions. The service was phenomenal. We had the pleasure of having Todd serve our meal. He was the only bright spot. Everything else was horrible.
I brought my son here as he typically likes dining out with me which is rare in this weird time and they were busy so I let them tend to their work and waited patiently. Then I noticed they weren’t just busy we were not being treated like everyone else there. I loved this place last time I went but this time it was much less friendly.
Delicious, beautifully presented, innovative food, and not that expensive for what it was. Everything we had was spectacular and the service was caring and unobtrusive.
We went to celebrate our anniversary. The atmosphere upstairs is great; very classy! We had the salumi first. It was okay. We got the ceviche next . It was great! I got pasta for a main course. It was good, but, small as a main course.
My wife got the flatiron, which was good, but, also small for $38! The buttermilk cake was good. The cappuccinos were excellent!
Fallen from grace! Very disappointing to see this establishment not what it once was :-(
Overall lovely dinner. The main issue we had was not with Oliveto but with OpenDoor. When I booked the reservation on OpenDoor I specified an indoor (standard) table. However at the restaurants end it said unspecified and we were initially seated outside in their parklet, which was fine but not what I had invisioned for our 23rd anniversary dinner (quiet, intimate as I remembered from pre-pandemic dinner there). The staff at Oliveto was very understanding and moved us inside when a table opened up, which was lovely.
The food was delicious and excellently prepared!
Oliveto is a restaurant that has seen better days. They're living in a fantasy that was shaped by Christian Bale's character in, American Psycho. The chef creates a menu that is BEYOND pretentious for pretentiousness' sake. They nouveau portions are laughable for the price.
I have had so many memorable meals here, often special occasion, for many years, I think decades, and prior visit was a couple of years ago. This again was a special occasion to celebrate a high school graduation along with post-quarantine, post-vaccination, 80th birthday, etc. Sadly not like prior visits and hope it has to do with the struggles restaurants have endured with pandemic and NOT the new normal. I don't want to go into every detail, though I could. Company made the night anyway. We know the standards that Oliveto's can have and likely like many are simply trying their best right now. Hope the exceptional Oliveto's can return again.
Maybe it's pandemic-induced scarcity, but the food was memorably good. Portions were fairly small, which left ample room for dessert. That turned out to be a good steer, as we ordered all four desserts and each was a delight.
They're still figuring out service, post-pandemic. The first table they put us at, when the room was empty, wobbled. There were various clues that people didn't have a lot of experience in their roles: silverware in the wrong place and things like that.
But they can still cook!
Oliveto is evidently still suffering the post pandemic blues. The salumi plate was sparse and throwing in the Indian papad didn’t work. The allegedly “Roman” carciofi was anything but, a weird combo between boiled and fried and both inedible and inauthentic. The sea bass was good but that alone didn’t save the day and the menu was just a hodgepodge of greatest hits. The ambiance and the lovely dining room and first class service translates to 4 stars
Meh. Bad food, decent service. Sad - it used to be so good.
Great welcoming service, delicious food and fun outdoor dining!
What was with the service?! The waiters missed all sorts of social cues. I actually had to verbally ask, "Excuse me please. Can we order now?" I also had to ask her verbally if she could take our plates. Do they not train their waiters anymore? We had a great time laughing at how bad the service was. The food was amazing and came out very quickly.
Meal itself was good; problem arose prior to our arrival when restaurant called to confirm reservation indicating the only option was OUTDOOR dining when we had specifically booked INDOOR through the OpenTable site. Host claimed upstairs restaurant is not open at all on Sundays and thus not available for indoor seating which was directly contradictory to the booking choices available on the website (I chose restaurant, NOT cafe & indoor, NOT outdoor). Host on phone indicated they'd had a similar complaint the week before. Also learned on arrival we would be eating in the Cafe (different menu than restaurant's). No one in the restaurant acknowledged the incorrect info on the website-unclear if it's a restaurant problem or Open table problem but there was no attempt at service recovery for the loss of the dining experience we expected.
Olivetto cafe has always had amazing food and drink. I really love the owner and his attention to detail. They’ve also changed just enough over the years to keep it interesting, but are known for consistency too. A tough balance to strike a d they do it well.
The atmosphere is more vibrant downstairs than up, but I like to people watch on the street, and that may not be for everyone. Upstairs does have its time and place for more quiet date nights and families who need to hear each other. The owner has installed a state of the art audio system to allow overall room noise cancelling and focused audio for those at your own table.
The wine selection could be more Italian focused, like it could be entirely Italian IMO, but the Italians that we tried were good. And the cocktails are all good. One knock on the food is that the selection is not always broad enough. I mean sometimes you want a steak, but they only have lamb and fish. That being said, it’s because they are seasonal, local and quality focused, so I always understand and go with the flow. The food is authentic Italian and incredibly well prepared, seasoned and thought out.
Olivetto is an overall neighborhood icon and I imagine will be for years to come.
Incredible slow. Many were served and done that arrived well after we did. Mixed up who ordered each dish. One was wrong so one guest didn’t have food when others did. Gnocchi was over done. First time trying this place. Will not go back and would not recommend.
Our server (Todd) was terrific.
The food is delicious and beautifully prepared. Service is excellent, and ambiance pleasant and unintrusive. Oliveto is one of my favorites!
Very limited menu and the food was not great. Our server was good, but they were shorthanded so it took too long.
It was great to be back at Oliveto. Aside from moderate traffic noise, the evening was perfect for outdoor dining. We never even used the heater. Food and drinks were good. Great to see familiar servers there, as well.
Great meal, prices are spot on and the service was great. Server took time with us even though he was busy.
Perhaps this is what the pandemic has done to restaurants? Food quality (both in ingredients and preparation) was not what I was used to from Oliveto with a very limited menu. I hope that as things normalize it can return to its former self.
Felt like nobody was in charge. Loose service, mediocre food. Overpriced.
The food was outstanding. Looked great and tasted better. Delighted to be back in the upstairs dining room after 15 months. The wait staff is in the process of being reconstituted. Service was a little disorganized, which did not surprise us given the circumstances. I’m sure things will come along. We will definitely be back sooner than later.
It was a little cold even indoors. Overall it was great service. They have a decent wine menu and the food was delicious. Very nice choice for Italian.
They are working out some kinks with the return to full scale. Service was slow and food was lukewarm. We had an absolutely stellar time here two weeks ago, so this was a bit of a disappointment.
Disappointing experience. We were sat at the worst table in the place even though we had indicated in our reservation that it was for our anniversary. The server barely checked in with us and seemed to be giving the other patrons more attention. Food was also delivered cold. The server remedied it which was appreciated. The food was good and well-priced.
If you are under 50 years old it seems like they view you as less important. The table next to us was having a loud inappropriate conversation about race which was probably induced by the several bottles of wine they appeared to have imbibed in. Not the best ambiance for a special dinner.
If this place wants to survive, they shouldn’t ignore their non-Boomer patrons. They could have made more money off of us if they had asked if we wanted refills on drinks or more dishes.
We were celebrating a foreign students graduation from UCB. Our guest found a hair in her salad. We called over one of the staff who said it wasn’t a hair but the cheese. Our guest asked for a supervisor and then the supervisor said no it was cheese. However upon closer inspection he admitted that it was an eyelash and most probably the guests! The final resolve was to take the salad off the bill. Our guest had been a server at a very high end Japanese restaurant in SF and was appalled that the staff questioned her complaint. We were too! It was embarrassing for us as well as our guest. Your food was delicious and our individual server, Natalia, was very nice. It would have been a perfect evening, our first in a restaurant since Covid, if your Maître d’ had just said he was so sorry instead of accusing our guest.
Four colleagues enjoyed a lovely business meal outside in the new out door seating arrangement. It was a bit more chilly than anticipated , but the staff eventually turned on the heat lamps which helped tremendously. The meals were very delicious, portions “just right”. The staff are attentive, engaging and responsive.
Great COVID friendly, open air masked waiters and friendly staff. Tables spaced nicely.
Oh wow, where to start with HOW bad this meal was?? I booked an outside table TWO months ago for my daughter's graduation. Upon arriving, we were sat at a table on a slope. SO sloped that our bodies were actually FALLING OFF OF THE CHAIRS! This also made the table incredibly unstable and rocking, with about a 2" difference between the legs. If we had actually eaten there, our food would have landed in our laps.
I should also mention that the patio further from the restaurant was NOT full. After sitting for a full 15 minutes, a waitress finally took a drink order. At this time, she also attempted to straighten the table, to no avail. Oh and the outside heaters above our heads? NOT working. So at that point I asked the hostess if we could move inside and she said the wait "would be about an hour for inside." So she moved us to the further outdoor patio. There we didn't have a slope or a crooked table, but again, the heater was NOT working. It was freezing (about 50 degrees) and we sat there for a good half hour waiting for the drinks and the salad order. Finally 2 of our 3 salads came. At that point, I saw a table being put together INSIDE where she said it would be an hour wait. However, they were squishing in a table to accommodate a party of 6. Again I went to talk to the hostess to see if we could move inside. She said she would see but in the meantime did we want space heaters and I replied yes. So they brought one space heater. Just one. Even though she said heaterS, plural. After about 20 more minutes, they finally moved us inside, upstairs. And then our 3rd salad came. Except it wasn't what we ordered. Wrong salad.
So all in all, NOT a great experience. I get that it's "Covid" but that isn't really an excuse anymore. No working heaters at either outside table. Drinks, late. Salads, wrong. Crooked tables with chairs that you literally fall off of. Food that was mediocre at best. When we finally got our meal, it was pretty meh. How sad for my daughter.
The food was just ok. Much too rustic and under seasoned. Didn’t feel there was a theme, just random Italian things. Super understaffed
Been here before when it was much better - must be covid impact - which is understandable in the short term. Service slow, food mediocre at best. Lamb leg was like jerky, Chocolate cake was akin to a hockey puck - needed two hands to cut into it! Hope it returns to its former quality soon.
The food was well cooked but not all that inspired.
