Oliveto is a lovely restaurant! I am sorry to hear that they are closing soon.
Sad to hear that they're closing. Lovely meal with fine service, better than when we were there a week ago.
Great as always
wanted to dine there one last time before they close! food and service great per usual
Glad we were able to go before they close. A lot of heaters outside which helped on a chilly night.
We went there for truffle night. Turns out truffle night was last week, but their website hasn’t been updated in two years so I have the wrong dates.
Sunday night the main kitchen isn’t open, just a café kitchen. So the menu was smaller and less interesting.
Service sucked. The restaurant is closing in a month, the best employees have already fled, and nobody really gives a damn
Read that the restaurant will be shuttering at the end of the year, so finally made a point to go! Food was good, but some things do not need to be "reimagined" e.g., bread soup should be a soup, not a muffin (or whatever that was). Also, our waiter (Tony) could not have been more disinterested in service.
Better than expected- excellent service and their smoked foods are sublime.
Made my reservation the day they announced they were closing (tons of reservations were open so clearly one of the first). The greeter was not friendly, was very whispery to the man who was to seat us and we got seated at a table that was right in the path of service. We asked to be moved to one of the open two tops toward the back. We were told no they were fully booked. While that might have been true that table Elsa’s open when we were seated, the couple seated there didn’t stay any longer/shorter than we did so the “turn” would have been the same. Restaurants often seat two women at a “worse” table than a couple maybe assuming women don’t order as much/tip as well. Not the case with me and my friends. In fact one couple were in/out with one drink each and an entree whereas my friend and I had a bottle of wine, app, 2pastas, a main to share, dessert and cappuccino and another glass of wine each with dessert.
I have the “brown butter sage” pasta. Very disappointing. It was basically a “kid pasta” with butter. No flavor to speak of. Definitely not browned butter with sage. My friend’s pasta (orchiette) was meh, steak was good. Carrot cake good.
Overall disappointing “last experience” at Oliveto. .
Thank you for 35 years of wonderful, creative food and being a place to gather with friends and family for special times.
Food was not as good as usual. My pasta was stuck together and didn’t;t have much flavor. Duck was too rare.
Oliveto's is the epitome of fine dining. Very good food, wonderful service in a beautiful setting. This is a special event restaurant and it will be missed.
Everything would have been outstanding except our food arrived room temperature instead of hot and the starter plates were still on the table when our main course was brought out. That's not acceptable for such a fine dining experience.
BUT I hate to write this since they are closing soon and they are still our favorite restaurant.
Food was spectacular, as usual. Service was polite but spotty. Perhaps fallout from the pending closing?
Our dinner was fine, ultimately. I had gone to the restaurant the day before to request indoor seating, which was available. When my friend arrived (before me) she was told only outdoor was available. When I arrived, I advised the hostess (not the one from the day before) that our seating had been changed the day before. We were finally seated indoors. My friend had also asked about a table inside, when she arrived but was told it was a table for 4. Shortly after that, 2 people were seated there. It seemed like a lot of staff were standing around, not clearing off tables or taking orders. It was Truffle Night upstairs, but there seemed to be plenty of staff downstairs, just not being very efficient. I am sorry that Oliveto is closing, but it also seems as though no one is currently in charge, which may be the reason that patronage has slipped a bit and the decision was made to close.
Hope the Kleins find someone who will continue the business! PS the pizza downstairs is excellent.
I wanted to give this place more stars, but the reality is with it closing due to covid the service & quite frankly the food wasn't all that.
Had a friend in town so we took the opportunity for a memorable dinner at Oliveto. It was pleasant dinner
Full menu is only available Wed through SUnday
We could not reserve upstairs but were upgraded when we arrived at the restaurant. We had a great table, great waiter and a terrific night with friends. Since Oliveto is closing at the end of the year we cut them a lot of slack in so far as 1) we never could get a live person on the phone to make modifications to our reservation 2) Even though the upstairs was completely full by 8 pm. there were only 2 waiters and 2 other staff. Our waiter was excellent though! He was totally busy and yet was thoughtful, friendly and wonderful. As an old-school waitress I couldn't imagine that the two waiters served the entire restaurant and did so with aplomb! So please everyone be so very kind if you experience this because I'm sure the other waitstaff has "moved on". We will try to return before the place closes but catch a night that we can opt from the larger menu. Great food!
Have not dined at Oliveto's in quite some time and decided to dine before they close. The food was on par as always, however the service was terrible from the start. Entering the restaurant there was no one to great us. Considering we had a reservation this was perplexing to say the least and we were not alone there was another party with reservations just as confused as we were. What made it worse the other staff seemed to be enjoying themselves. When the other party address them they stated the the hosted step away and would be back. However, as soon as the hosted return the staff previous spoken to came over to help. This was just the start. After being seated we were ignored for greater than 20 minutes this was once again perplexing as there were staff moving all around us. Finally some one drop off water and I do mean place the water on the table without a word. Another five minutes go by so I flagged a wait staff to inquire about being totally ignored. Since twenty-five minutes had passed we were ready to order and place our order. At no time were we offered bread and thought it must no longer be provided until a new party was seated behind me and was immediately offered bread. Overall, the wait staff appeared to be very young which does not mean that they could not have done a better job they seemed inexperienced.
I know Oliveto is in its last throes, and we booked dinner to show support and appreciation for the years as a community landmark. Honestly, if they can't maintain quality and service until the end, they shouldn't be encouraging folks to come in. Our experience on every front was awful. Service was slow and forgetful, food was extremely late and mediocre and the atmosphere upstairs was sad.
they had a good run - sorry this last experience will leave a bad taste.
We had a very nice experience but the service was mixed in quality. The drinks were late in arriving. but then they provided us with extra plates as we were sharing the various dishes we had ordered. The Lemon Drop cocktail was quite refreshing and delicious. We were slightly disappointed that the dessert options appear to have been reduced from our pre-pandemic experiences with only one dessert listed.
The food, on the other hand, was, as expected, excellent and we were able to carry on a conversation without having to shout to hear each other. We are sorry that Oliveto is closing at the end of the year after so many memorable dinners there. It was our go-to choice after Bay Wolf closed. Always an enjoyable experience.
Sad, been there dozens of times in the last 6 years. Food was served lukewarm, service slow, menu limited, they should close tomorrow, not wait till the end of the year
Disappointed. Certainly not up to previous standards. Food seemed like yesterday’s leftovers, had to send lasagna back to the oven. Service was inattentive.
Go before they close at the end of the year. A special place.
A very wonderful and yummy experience. The server, Todd, was very helpful with the vegetarian in our group and did not make us feel like we were trouble at all. Have only dined out a few times since the pandemic and so glad we chose Olivetto's for a special night.
Always enjoyed Oliveto. The duck was amazing as was the sage and brown butter pasta. The steak was also perfectly prepared
Would recommend dining here before it closes
What a joy to be able to dine in a calm and quiet environment with excellent food and service. Sad that they are closing but happy to have enjoyed Oliveto for 35 years. The controlled noise level makes for easy conversation. Excellent mushroom appetizers and the scallops and beluga lentils were delicious.
We will miss you and be sure to come back at least once more before the end of the year.
Sublime flavors presented in the most non-obtrusive, genteel manner.l
Great place. Delicious food! I would recommend this place to all people visiting East Bay.
The food at Oliveto is reliably good, often great. This restaurant has been serving and delighting diners for over 30 years and I am sorry it's closing at the end of 2021. Make a reservation NOW if you want to enjoy a really good meal!
Always a great experience- good, presentation, wine list, service!
Shane - Was our waiter and he was excellent. We will miss Olivetos.
Ambiance is very good. Comfortable setting and good acoustics--able to hear table conversation even though restaurant was full. Food was fair. The dishes may have had good quality ingredients (per menu) but too many had the featured ingredient mashed up with various other things, so hard to tell or taste what one was actually eating.
This has always been one of my very favorite restaurants. I started eating here when it open in the mid-80s and it has always gone from strength to strength. That it will be closing at the end of the year is so sad, and it will surely be missed by its loyal client base and by everyone who delights in great food!
Only meal in 35 years thatwas below par. One of my 2 favorite restaurants in Bay Area. Haste to I see them close
Always a delicious delight. Always reliable and relaxed. An essential classic.
Lovely anniversary dinner. Perfect
Oliveto was, as ever, excellent. The food and service were both spot on. I particularly appreciated being able to get a delicious wine at a reasonable price. It was good to be back.
