Wonderful evening with nothing to complain about.
One of our favorite restaurants. Fabulous holiday ambiance and delicious food! Thank you!
We received a warm welcome and had excellent service, but the food was not stellar. The swordfish was overcooked and didn't have much flavor and the Piedmontese ribeye was very fatty and not properly cooked - it had to be sent back.
We had just been in NYC and the prices are comparable, if not higher here at Oliveto, and the food not nearly as good as some of the wonderful places we ate in New York.
Our meal for two was over $250 and it included three alcoholic drinks, one soup and one salad, one pasta and one meat entree plus 1 dessert. They included 18% service charge. Way too high for the food we were served.
Not likely to return.
Excellent dinner in every respect
One of the best restaurant in Berkeley-Oakland no doubt.
It had been awhile since we visited Oliveto’s and we were delighted to experience a very innovative menu with delectable flavors. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about every item offered and enthusiastically offered recommendations. I really loved the raw scallop appetizer and the pasta with Oregon Dungeness crab. Friends had the pork chops, ravioli, and steak and raved about how fresh and delicious everything was. Oliveto’s was packed yet we could enjoy a conversation. Definitely an excellent restaurant that stands the test of time and dedication to excellent preparation and execution.
I have enjoyed many memorable meals @Olivetos . Dinner
Was say very mediocre. Nothing was spot on as is normal. Perhaps new folks in the kitchen not sure but it’s only a first world complaint
The beet salad was delightful. I wish I could replicate. The fish was perfectly prepared with a firm glazed finish and a light and tasty center. The dining room is handsome and comfortable. Really a lovely lunch!
Loved everything except it was cold! Cold air whooshed upstairs from the front door.
Great meal and a lovely space. One in our party cannot eat dairy, and the server and chef went out of their way to identify all the items on the menu that person could eat. We'll be back.
The menu is innovative, but still approachable. The food is prepared well: nothing is over- or under-seasoned or over-or under-cooked. The Community Grains bread and pasta is the best in the Bay Area. This is one of my favorite places to eat in the country, let alone in Oakland.
Upon entering the upstairs restaurant we were greeted by friendly staff. We were celebrating a couple of birthdays and would recommend Olivetto for any special any special occasion. The Sommelier was very helpful with our wine selections. The food was delicious and was so excited to enjoy some shaved white truffles on my pasta. Will be returning real soon!
The food was just ok, on the greasy side. There seemed to have too much sauce on the pasta, and man, the portion was extremely small.
Great restaurant to meet an old friend of 50 years, on the day before Thanksgiving. It was very quiet at first, after arriving at 11:30 for lunch. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful, kind and cheerful, as he accurately described the menu items and anwered our questions with patience and thoroughness. As the restaurant became more filled, the noise level rose, but it wasn't too bad for our aging hearing, for we were next to the front windows. Our waiter of course became busier, and checked in with us less frequently, but that was understandable, especially since we also no longer had questions. The best thing was that we were not urged to leave, so we had a long-planned visit of two hours, both of us meeting in Berekely after travelling from afar. We kept our eyes on how full the reaturant was as the two hours passed by, and when we left there were stilll a couple of open tables. The lunch menu was suberb with sseveral fine offerings and delicious as always whenwecome to viti Berkeley. Thank you for being open on this very busy day before Thanksgiving.
I hadn’t eaten at Oliveto for many years. It qualifies highly as a reliable venue to enjoy a quieter dinner with friends whom you actually want to converse with. The service was outstanding: knowledgeable, friendly, wine-smart waiters and well-trained servers.
Menu is very heavy on richer foods. We’d have liked to have been able to order some of the simpler green sides available on the downstairs bar menu. My duck sausage appetizer was a perfect starter, especially when shared with a companion who had ordered the leafy greens salad. Mains were pastas with a little more butter than I’m used to, but delicious to the last bite. A glass of Sauternes chilled to perfection made the sorbet and apple desserts all the more enjoyable.
The service was shockingly poor, ranging from inattentive to incompetent. However great the food
I was unimpressed by the price and the small portions. The food was ok but not worth the price.
one of the lovliest sports in the east bay. excellent food and ambiance
I will start by saying that the food, once we finally got some, was good.
However, the service made it a horrible experience. This was our first time dining at this restaurant, and we crossed the bay specifically for the truffle menu, only to discover that the wait staff here has perfected the art of walking pass patrons without making eye contact.
We sat at our table for about 20 minutes without anyone acknowledging us. No one to ask if we wanted a drink, bread. Nada. Finally a woman (not a server) came by and took our order, as she was not able to find any servers available. We then sat there for about another 30 minutes without any food, drink or wine, while various servers walked pass us as rapidly as possible and avoided our attempts to get their attention.
Finally, I literally had to yell "excuse me" to ask about the wine we ordered. Turned out the server never put in the order! Her whole attitude was to make excuses and bordered on being rude. As if we were imposing on her!
Our reservation was at 8:45. By the time we got our wine, it was past 9:30. It was close to 10pm when we finally got our first courses. All of this was made even more intolerable as the restaurant mandates a 20% tip!!
Never will we come here again. Plenty of other places with just as good food and fabulous warm service. Just head down the street to Belloti instead.
Truffle Dinner! Excellent food. The Crudo of Scallops and the Celery Soup as starters set the evening! Our second course of handmade buttered pasta with white truffles was fantastic! Our last courses of duck sausage and braised pork put us over the top !
Made reservations for the Truffle dinner week. Enjoyed the meal and the fresh truffles. Staff was friendly and warm. The room is acoustically modulated to allow you to have a conversation without interference from other patrons. I found this very pleasant and the lack of music was not missed. I only noticed at the end of dinner when I turned on my focus on the decor, lighting and sound.
I met a friend for dinner last Wednesday night, and while I was waiting no one came by the table to offer a drink until I flagged someone down. We ordered dinner and my chicken came out cold. I mentioned this to our server who apologized and took it back to the kitchen to be re-heated. I waited nearly 20 minutes for my dinner to be heated and served again, and, finally, when it came, it was still tepid. It was 9:45 and I was starving and ate it cold. I will not be returning to Oliveto.
Loved truffle week dinner. I’ll be back next year!
Unremarkable food and slow service, not sure if we will come back
Oliveto stands the test of time! After 30+ years I say it is still one of the East Bay's best! Can't wait to go back.
Great. Always meets my expectations.
Love the new chef, Brian Griffith -- he's really done a terrific job -- the food at Oliveto has never been better. Been going here since it opened 30+ years ago. Highly recommend for lunch and dinner.
Delicious food. Excellent service. We had a leisurely lunch and never felt rushed.
This is a beautiful restaurant with great service and good food. I feel the serving size could have been slightly more generous but the taste was superb. Always a reliable choice for a nice meal.
Olivero Is our favorite restaurant. This meal in particular was exquisite. The service was excellent.
Food is very good. And the service is also good. Maybe a cut below Chez Panisse, but still a fine restaurant.
Food was pretty good, but we ordered a fig arugula salad which came without the figs. The waitress then served us a small bowl of figs with dinner but did not take the “fig salad” off the tab. We were also told one price for a glass of wine when we asked the waiter and then a higher price appeared on the tab. This was changed on request. There are too many other good restaurants around to make it worth while gonna to this one again.
Had the bread basket, the tuna appetizer, the octopus main with side of roasted brussel sprouts, the caramel ice cream for dessert and then tea. ALL delicious!!
I have been here before and been wowed by everything, but this time both the host and the food service people were distant and abrupt and seemed like it was a bother to be serving us that night. The meal also seems to be rushed and we felt that just because we booked an early table, does not mean that they have to get us out in an hour. At this point, I shall not return, because there are many more restaurants in the area that are happy to serve me.
Nice and attentive staff,
Food is amazing and consistent
It was a disappointment. We were seated at the worst table possible. It was a tiny, impromptu table, under a fan and an arrangement of dried leaves; there were other two tops available. We had made our reservation two weeks prior.
The woman who led us to the table made it clear that this table was what she felt we deserved. As two older women of color, the whitening of this community has made life more uncomfortable, that said, we didn’t expect to be treated like homeless walk-ins. Let’s discuss wine pours. My friend owned a wine store with her husband for 30 years, she knows what a 5 oz pour looks like; the seater poured us each a $21 “glass of wine” that was a 3 oz pour at best. If you don’t want to serve someone let them know before you take their money.
Would never go back
Our server was outstanding. She gave knowledgeable suggestions that were perfect. Food was delicious too.
Great dinner and friendly service
I brought friends and family to celebrate a birthday. 3 of us had food allergies and intolerances, which usually isn’t an issue. I included this info in my reservation. I observed the server had no knowledge of helping diners select appropriate dishes based on ingredients. My niece and I came away with stomach pain, fortunately no worse. I have dined all over the world with food intolerances for 7 years with very few problems. I was surprised that Oliveto, with its reputation and location in the land of tolerance couldn’t assign us a more experienced server. We paid $800 for this meal. The food was between fair and good for the adapted dishes. All of the wait staff were polite and the other diners enjoyed their food.
