Wait staff was attentive but not in your face. The tomato dish was unbelievable!
Wonderful food and setting. Service was very good too. Love the homemade pasta and fresh veggies.
In all fairness, there was a street fair outside the evening we went for dinner. Maybe they were short staffed. Our server was friendly and nice but the service in general at the restaurant was slow. We had salads of greens and each had a pasta dish. Unlike the tender pasta I’ve had at many “higher end” Italian restaurants, I had to use a knife to cut a vegetarian pasta. Perhaps the cafe is preferable to the restaurant so next time I’ll try that.
We were lucky enough to enjoy the final night of Oliveto's Tomato series dinner, it was spectacular! Service was amazing, wine was spectacular, the food was delicious. Thank you for a wonderful date night!
Tomato Dinner! Wonderful!
Tomato dinner, great!
We have always enjoyed Oliveto, but the last year has been particularly satisfying, due (we think) to a new chef. But we'd have to say that the Tomato Dinner this year was comparatively disappointing, though still a fine and pleasant evening. The sliced tomatoes weren't as good as last year! The tomato dishes were less tomato-y. That said, Oliveto is still among our favorite restaurants, and we recommend it (generally) with great enthusiasm.
Lovely quiet lunch with friends. If only the pasta had been served with something to contrast with the heavy, dark, over-sauced pasta bolognese. Composed salads were fabulous as were the deserts.
The setting is lovely, space between some tables is quite ample, waitress good. Both plates of food were mediocre, some pieces of steak tough, my bolognese was mediocre. Dessert great. Would love to return if we could find some oof dishes.
Service was very slow, took a half hour to take our drink order, and another half hour to order food.
The menu is a pleasant and huge improvement over the old menus. There is more variety and the dishes are outstanding. Thank you
As the unused wine glasses were being taken away, one broke. To guarantee that no glass was left behind, our water glasses, bread/butter , olive dish and most silverware were also taken away. I had to ask for replacement of some of the items. We had a 9year old with us and she asked three times to have her paper straw replaced after it disintegrated. She finally walked to the bar and asked the bartender for a new one. Our food was great. We all ordered different starters, mains, and dessert. Some sharing was done and everything was beautiful in presentation and taste. It was a busy night however with a child at the table, I was hoping for a more timely service and meal. Our meal took three (3) hours from seating to leaving. Way to long for young adults unless they are attached to a mobile device which we don't allow.
Seems a bit overrated to me. Food was just ok.......
Our first anniversary dinner was just Ok. Server Cecilia was wonderful, but couldn't make up for halibut that was overdone and dry. Grilled chicken and arugula salad very nice, beets gazpacho pleasantly different. Peach tarte tasty but miniscule.
I expected to be wowed at Oliveto, but wasn't.
WE HAVE DINED HERE FOR MANY YEARS. IT IS THE FIRST TIME THE FOOD WAS NOT ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT. THE HALIBUT WAS "OK" (CERTAINLY NOT EXCEPTIONAL). THE NEW YORK STEAK WAS SO TOUGH IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO CUT WITH A SHARP KNIFE. NO KIDDING.
OH WELL THE SOUP AND DESERTS WERE GREAT.
I CLICKED I WOULD STILL RECOMMEND SINCE I ASSUME OUR LAST EXPERIENCE WAS AN UNUSUAL FLUKE.
Usually great food. This dinner was not over the top but solidly good.
The food was wonderful however the service was not great. Very impersonal never asked us if we even like our dinner.
Wine, halibut and service were outstanding. However, the pasta was just ok. The quiet and understated ambiance was disturbed by patrons at the table next to us who let their phone ping over and over again. Staff was gracious and relocated us to another table. It's not the restaurant's fault, but I'd vote for a policy of checking phones at the door.
Arrived, table was ready and service was prompt. As they have a limited menu, selection of food and drink when by very quickly. Only issue I had was their reluctance to allow any substitutes. We had a variety of dishes and all were good. My main course was cold and promptly replaced.
Beginning was rocky. Cannot be seated early despite open tables but worth the wait for a window view. Dining service slow at first, but picked up. Coming here since 2003 and still my favorite to go place.
Two of our dishes were poor unlike previous experiences. Offnight in kitchen?
First time in Oakland and this was a spectacular restaurant.
The food is absolutely delicious! The menu changes daily and is very inventive. Loved it!
Always good. Like having mom cook for your birthday.
Special with favorites.
As always an interesting menu and great ambience. Minor issues. Sitting at the end table for two my chair got bumped by passers by a dozen times.
Halibut is hard to get just right and I hoped it would be perfect. Sadly not quite.
I was entertaining my sister from out of town for lunch. The dining room was bright and airy. It was easy to have a conversation because the noise level in the room was at a minimum. Found the beets salad to be a bit too salty and mentioned it to our waiter when he asked how was everything. To my pleasant surprise, they gave us a desert for free. That is good business.
Great service with good food.
One of the nicest restaurants in oakland, fresh food, great menu, fabulous service
We had a truly delicious meal. The corn ravioli zinged with the taste of summer and the pork chop is among the best ever eaten. Our server was also very nice and helpful.
Our server never came to see how the food was. We had to make an effort to get her attention for our second drinks. The table was placed too tightly. My chair was being bumped by the neighbor while we ate.
We had a very enjoyable dinner on Sunday evening. The waiter was most attentive and gave excellent recommendations for menu items. The breaded and fried taleggio cheese cubes was amazing. All of the pasta dishes are delicious, but the doublio (?) was like two different ravioli's in one, each with different fillings. There were many other choices on the menu that looked good - we will have to come back and try more. And it was so nice to be in a restaurant where you can hear your dinner companions talk without having to raise your voice!
The pork entrée was poor. Extremely fatty. Think Rib Eye X 5. Vey little meat.
The chef should of never cooked this piece, the waiter should of never served this.
We politely showed the waiter and she agreed. And we finished and left without any further comment from Oliveto.
We come for a special meal and this was not.
Great service and a wonderful venue to catch up with a dear friend. Waitress very attentive but not hovering. Great knowledge of wine list, every dish a delight. This is one of our "go to" places for special occasions but a little too pricey for frequency.
Great service and excellent food. Not too noisy so able to enjoy company. A bit pricey though.
Great food. Very good service. Found this place where one can carry on a conversation.
Food was greasy and great
Having not dined at Oliveto Cafe for the past few years, our experience reminded me why I have always considered Oliveto to be one of the Bay Area's finest. The perfect mix of quality food, seamless and humble service, gracious and classy environment prices that sing VALUE for the quality. Summary, if you want innovative menu, well served in a comfortable, classy and non-pretentious envisonment, OIiveto can't be beat.
I love this restaurant and sometimes the food is amazing. Recently however it has not been special at all - we had pasta. Perhaps the other dishes were better. The venue was still beautiful and I enjoyed going there for that reason.
This was my first time at this restaurant and I was very impressed. Service was excellent. The appetizers and entrees (pasta) were delicious. We’ll definitely return.
Hadn't been here in a while. So glad we went there! Amazing, creative, seasonal, delicious food! Sound level was great! Even with the dining room full, we could carry on a conversation without shouting or straining to hear - very refreshing! Excellent overall experience! Pasta dishes were amazing!
