Oliver A Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Olivers is quite ok ,food good, service good. But it is loud and small. You feel under pressure when you are half thru your meal and look up to see six or seven people waiting for a table. It would make sense to tell people that when they call to reserve that a certain hour is full and space the reservations so you don`t have people standing over your table waiting to sit somewhere. But we will come back as always.
I have been to this little restaurant at least 20 times over many years and this was the first unsatisfactory experience. We had reservations for lunch and the place was packed with only 2 people working the floor. Service was extremely poor and we waited for our food for close to one hour,,,,with no rolls, bread, etc., to keep us busy. Then our favorite dish, mussels in coconut curry sauce was not as good as usual as it seemed to be missing the coconut milk and not as flavorful as the many times we have had it before. The place was very dark and exceptionally noisy because of the crowd. I will return, however, I can no longer recommend this restaurant with praise.
Had a reservation but upon arrival was advised that the as a result of the Christmas Tree lighting earlier that evening, many dinners before us arrived late for their reservations and pushed everything back. We ended up having to stand for thirty minute (no place to sit and wait). We not offered anything to compensate us for the inconvenience...not even a leftover piece of Thanksgiving pie. Not the end of the world but poor management.
Every year we come to listen to the Christmas Carolers. This year we once again came to enjoy them. According to the email that I receive from the restaurant the carolers would be there from 6:30 until 9:00. Our reservation was for 5:45. It was either a 5:45 reservation or a 7:45 available. Service seemed to be extremely slow but that should only mean we would have more time to listen to the caroling. When 6:30 came and no carolers were there we were told that 1 of the 4 carolers had a problem & they might not be coming. We did not get finished with our meal until 7:45. I think the carolers were coming in as we were leaving. Food was very good. They have the best mussels. The rack of lamb was also very good. We did not bother to have coffee or dessert because there was no singing but I would have thought the restaurant could have offered a dessert on the house since I think that many of the people were there to hear the caroling. It would have been a nice gesture. This is the 2nd time in recent years where we booked a reservation to hear them & they didn't show up. Extremely disappointed.
My wife and I have been going to Oliver's for several years now, and we have never been remotely disappointed. The menu may seem small but combined with the specials we have always had to pick between 3/4 great dishes, Scallops, Salmon, Steak, Beef Pot Pie are a few of the favorites. The potato soup is also one of our favorites. Since, it is a BOY the bill has always been well under $100.00. We highly recommend.
My daughter and I had dinner and found the food delicious, we had appetizers and for dinner , we both had the pumpkin soup and she had the Meatloaf and I had the stuffed squash. The pumpkin soup was so good I tried to order it again as takeout, but they did not have it. The squash was amazing, my taste buds were doing the happy dance! So I recommend coming the Bordentown, walk around the shops and grab a nice dinner at Olivers .
Olivers is a hidden gem in a sleepy little town! The food is outstanding and the service is exceptional. The wait staff is attentive without being too much; and the food feels like it's cooked JUST for you, using fresh ingredients and prepared with care.
I would recommend Olivers to anyone looking to have a fine dining experience at an affordable price.
I don't remember all our servers' names, but they are all upbeat and pleasant. Bruce is always a pleasure too. The hamburgers are delicious...fun combinations that work well together. I commend the restaurant for having the Ziggy Stardust burger in memory of my favorite rocker, David Bowie, when he sadly passed in January (as if Oliver's didn't already have my heart). The mac & cheese is yummy, and all of the salads are perfect. My husband and I drive from Lawrenceville if we're in the mood for a perfect burger (Wednesday and Thursdays they have a special burger menu), and we have celebrated birthdays with friends here too. We stumbled on Oliver's last year after attending a community event at the church across the street and we will keep going back. Highly recommend! Oh, and the desserts are homemade & delicious :)
My husband and I had our anniversary diner at Oliver. We ordered our favorite menu items: squash soup, caesar salad, cauliflower steaks, scallops, plum sorbet and creme brûlée. EVERYTHING was scrumptious, beautifully presented, and expertly served by our waiter. Since the restaurant is a BYOB, we were able to bring our favorite wine to accompany the meal. The dining room decor is welcoming, the staff always gracious and efficient, and the food reliably excellent.
A wonderful restaurant, unique menu items , fabulous unusual burger combinations, but this is no ordinary burger joint. And the mini-dessert offerings are the perfect end to a satisfying meal! The high noise level in the main dining area spoils the ambiance for anything other than group/family meals, which is sad, but it can be quieter in the two side areas near the entrance.
We have been to Oliver's many times. Tonight we went with friends and wanted to catch up... Impossible to do. Oliver's had live music that overtook every word that we tried to say. The noise ( the music was horrible) was unbearable. The restaurant is not big and the amplified noise was incredible. It ruined the evening. We will never go back. The food is good but the noise makes you lose your appetite.
One of our favorite places to go and have consistantly good food. I had the scallops with potato salad and creamed corn. It is a great comfort food dish with a surprise of sliced pickles in the mix. They add a wonderful bite and crunch. DH loves the hummus for an appetizer. The desserts here are home made and are a must have when you eat here. We had the snickers cake and we could have licked the plate! The service here is friendly and some of the local restaurants here could learn how to please your customer by watching them. Matt and Danielle have a gem here and the locals all know it!!
