About this restaurant

  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
The original Wayne County Jail was built in 1865, and was claimed to be the finest law enforcement facility of its kind. For over 100 years the site housed the police department, and criminal population of Wayne County. The building is also recorded for being the very last site for a public hanging in the state of Ohio. In 1977, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department was relocated across the street to a new facility, leaving more than 100 years of stories behind.

In 1980 the building was registered as a historical landmark and in 1995 was purchased by a private business owner. The Olde Jaol Steakhouse & Tavern was then given life. We pride ourselves on our reputable hospitality and service, and a unique atmospheric experience you won’t find anywhere else!

Come for a romantic evening in the cell rooms (the very place the inmates once spent time), or enjoy a casual meeting with friends in the tavern. Our covered patio is the perfect place for a casual dinner.

Absolutely horrible service. Reservation was not met. Table not ready. Sat us at a crappy dark booth at the bar area. After 25 minutes of sitting in the dark I asked to see a manager. After 10 min he showed up and said he would get on it. 10 min later a waiter showed up. I asked about drinks and he had no knowledge of the menu. We left and went to city Square. Also very dirty. The bar was completely filled with dirty glasses. I will NEVER return. Horrible service horrible housekeeping. Horrible wait staff. Completely lacking management. Sad for such a beautiful building with tons of potential to be a failure. Management needs fired and staff trained.

I had my girl out for a nice quiet dinning experience. We were seated right away at a very nice quiet table. Our waiter Dave was outstanding, his wine and dinner recommendations were perfect. The desert tray options we loved. Thank You Ol Jail for your part in a perfect date. Highly Recommend!

Eaten here multiple times, the food is good. The issues- I planned a week in advanced and booked a table for 7 for my parents 56th wedding anniversary knowing that the venue predominantly has smaller tables so I gave them plenty of notice and a confirmation the day prior to the visit. We arrived early, and just in time for me to listen to a conversation in which the owner told the hostess to give our table away. Turns out the table that was reserved and set up for us, which was in a great location, was just given to Friends of the owner who walked in without reservations. Very poorly handled with an incredibly lame excuse of “this sometimes happens”. Even the servers were not happy with what the owner did with the reservation and you could see their frustration as well. We ended up shoved into a different room. The glasses were dirty (lipstick) and had to replaced. It took forever to get our food as well- 3 hours to complete the meal due to waiting. Luckily, we were given Dave as our server and he was fabulous! Had it not been for his incredible personality and friendliness we would have walked out. Kudos to Dave for saving what would have likely been an all around poor performance from this restaurant because of the owner. Chances are very high, I will not return.

It was darker than I like, but our server, Dave, was fantastic. He was very attentive. The food was good. The alfredo sauce was too thick and made a big glob when cooled. The prime rib and sea bass were very good. For desserts were okay. The key lime pie has an artificial taste. The crust was delicious. The cheesecake and salted caramel cake were average. The jewel is the Prohibition Room upstairs. They have an extensive selection of bourbons at reasonable prices. We will be back.

Always a great restaurant. Unique ambiance. I’ve never had a bad meal here. My friends and I all got the Vegan option, Tofu Stirfry, which included tofu, peppers and rice done in like an Asian sauce and it was EXCELLENT!! I would highly recommend it to anyone! Kudos to the Chef!
