We were going to take a walk on the C&O canal and decided to get lunch first. It was very quiet and the food was very good. Only one down side is the very narrow spiral staircase we had to climb up to the restaurant room, going back down was not my favorite part of the restaurant. It is a very old place that could need a little bit of TLC.
The menu was nice and varied and the waiters also very professional.
Old Bait & Switch
We’ve been coming to OAI for many years and thought it would be nice to invite a dear friend to celebrate Valentine’s Day and her birthday. I checked their website and we were excited to see “Valentine Month Dinner Special” where you could choose 3 courses for $40. On Saturday, Feb. 15 we asked our server for the the special menu but was told they were not offering that special due to the restaurant being “busy.” No need to offer the special since they are busy and can demand regular prices. Just maybe people such as ourselves made a reservation for that specific purpose? The server also told us that other patrons had asked the same question. Totally inappropriate business practices from a well-established restaurant. We were shocked and dismayed.
I was to meet two friends at noon. Made my open table reservation and confirmed with my friends. I arrived on time but did not see my friends. I gave the hostess my name and she checked me in. I waited for my friends but after about 7 minutes was seated. I sat at the table and waited another 15 minutes. Finally I recognized someone. The hostess sat my friends at a separate table. We got together, no apology nothing. On leaving I told the hostess that we deserved an apology, and while chewing her food she was unapologetic except sat it once’s while yammering, not cool I want to tell management . My friends were not happy either
Old Angler's Inn could probably survive just based on its location and history, but they do not take that for granted and really do put a lot of effort into the menu, the service, and the ambiance. This place is a real gem.
Super cute restaurant that has a lot of charm. The food and service were excellent. Great for a date night!
Our experience of dinners out on Valentines Day have been so unimpressive that we have refrained from doing it for years. This year we decided to head out on Friday Night and give it a go. Thank God Old Angler’s had a reservation open. It was simply outstanding in every way. We got a terrific bottle of Amarone served by our delightful Italian waiter and the most plump and delicious oysters I’ve had in a long time. That coupled with a spectacular fois gras made for an amazing appetizer. The entrees were delicious and perfectly cooked and Creme Brulee for dessert was creamy and first rate. Just a terrific overall experience.
We've been coming to Old Angler's for many years. The food, ambience and service has always been superb, and our last visit on February 14, 2020 was no exception.
We so enjoy the atmosphere and meal at Old Angler's, particularly on special occasions. The décor inside and outside are festive for the season.
Food. Was good, but nothing exceptional. Cozy, warm atmosphere. No bread served. Had to ask and then each we're brought only one piece.
We were very happy with all we ordered — the eggs Benedict and onion soup were done to perfection. We will be back — when the food is so great, the ambiance and setting so lovely, and no loud music — why not?!!
It was my second time there, I came with my best friend whos birthday it was, and our server was so funny and friendly and we realized we were both persian! After that, he was basically acting like he was a long lost relative and was so warm and personable. He brought out a cake with a candle in it and started singing in farsi which was so funny! He then insisted on taking a picture of us on my phone for us to commemorate. We really loved him and the food was amazing!
Great ambiance. Food mediocre /institutional. Service was fine.
I selected Old Angler's Inn to celebrate my birthday because I liked the menu selections I found online. I was especially interested because there were several special discounts. We decided to take advantage of the February romantic 3-course dinner special, which was a very good price. We loved the atmosphere on arriving, the valet parking, the lights in the trees, the big bonfire, and the live guitar music. I was surprised that when we were seated we were given the regular menu with no mention of the specials. I had to ask for the dinner special and we were brought a piece of paper with the special menu. Other than that, everything was great. The service and food were both excellent.
Lobster bisque had pieces of shrimp though was tasty. Rockfish special didn't appear to be caught recently but good sauces. Nice presentation and atmosphere.
Great cozy atmosphere on a winter night. A Monday reservation at 7:30 found the dining room surprisingly empty. The chef's special risotto was delicious, chicken marsala and beef bourguignon both very good. Our only complaint was that despite the few numbers of diners, we found our server disinterested and less than amiable. Though the food was very good, I would hesitate before dining here again.
Both our entrees were salty
Delightful as always - a favorite place for our family!
We had a night out with good friends
The Inn is charming in the winter with its fireplace and in the summer with outdoor eating. The food and service are very good. It is a rustic country environment. The specials of the day, such as trout, are especially good.
Cool location, but overall just wasn't feeling it. Appetizers came out too slow and the quantities were sparse for what they were. Trout dip didn't have enough bread slices and the bread that was served was just average. Kids pasta dish had marinara in the title on the menu, but didn't have any sauce on it when it arrived.
We had brunch food which was just OK. (Eggs Benedict and French toast) Overall just felt like the experience was poor value for money and was telling myself I wouldn't be going out of my way to make a return trip. To sum up: A restaurant with a unique location and premium prices but ho-hum food and service.
The food was mediocre at best. Both the salmon and lamb that we ordered were extremely undercooked (the salmon was practically raw). The "Crispy Brussel Sprouts" were distinctly NOT crispy. The winter vegetable medley was mostly cold by the time it was brought to us, as were the mini potatoes with the lamb. It wouldn't have mattered so much if these were $12 plates. But a combined bill (with tip) of $140 is obscene for the low quality of food we received.
Only the downstairs bar was open for dinner.
No draft beer available.
Everything was perfectly acceptable.
OAI promotes it's Happy Hour but the bartender was unaware of the time and insisted we order from the regular menu at 530pm because happy hour ends at 530 but had just told us the restaurant opens at 530. Very confusing until another staff person corrected the bartender's misunderstanding. However, no one was able to explain happy hour prices or if items on the Bar Menu (happy hour) were any different from items on the regular dinner menu. Or why the same items are included on the happy hour menu at the same price as the regular menu. It is very unclear.
We met the owners while sitting at the bar, which was really nice. We always like coming to Old Anglers Inn because the food and service are both wonderful.
All four of us had a great meal. Crab cake and beef bourgenon were especially good. Waiter was excellent, and there when we needed him. We were not rushed which made for a very enjoyable dinner and evening.
Love the food, atmosphere and entertainment!! Lively Sunday night dinner.
Lovely place with a quirky, old-world style. Food generally didn’t live up to its price tag. If you want ambiance and average food, a good choice.
Just a perfect late dinner in a friendly place serving wonderful food.
Went because I had bought a Groupon, which was very misleading. I asked a few other friends and they had the same problem.
...as always, enjoyed...enjoyed talking with our waiter who was from Albania...how many people have been to Albania? Not Many...Old Angler’s is our go-to place when we are having lunch with folks from Maryland...since we live in northern Virginia...
This restaurant has been updated since I was at it years ago. The outside seating with a bonfire was full of families with younger children since it is a more relaxed setting. the inside was very nice and our party of seven enjoyed sitting by the fire and celebrating! the diverse menu allowed each person to order their favorite kind of food. And all the foods that folks ordered were outstanding; not just good but finished to the last bite. We will definitely be back to enjoy the Old Anglers Inn.
Service was terrible. We witnessed 3 tables of groups get up and leave before we even got our food because they weren’t being helped. Food was okay. Wasn’t terrible, but wasn’t something to order again. Overpriced. Nice outside ambiance. Service was extremely slow.
Food and service were excellent and I love the ambiance.
I am a repeat customer at OA and also enjoy the ambience there. The food this time was disappointing: roasted Brussel sprouts were very dry, and mussels, though an ample number, had at least half that did not open and were thus inedible.
Excellent menu choices
A real gem.
My husband and I love this restaurant! It's our "go to" for our anniversary and other special occasions. The upstairs dining area can get loud, but it quiets down a bit once people start eating.
My husband and I wanted a quiet and romantic place to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, and we chose Old Angler's Inn. It was a great place to enjoy a meal and have a conversation without the background noise of so many "trendy" places. The narrow spiral staircase up to the main dining room is retro and special, the food was good and the ambiance great. It was worth to the drive to a place off the beaten track.
It was an amazing place to celebrate New Year's Eve! Love the outdoor firepit!
New Years Eve. Great food. Was disappointed they didn’t have any New Years toast or cheer. Felt a bit rushed to leave.
