Okura Robata Grill and Sushi Bar - Laguna Beach Ratings and Reviews
Food was way above expectations. I've gotten used to being disappointed by food in Orange county, and this place really impressed me.
My one gripe is the wall to wall mirrors in the men's bathroom. That's just freaking creepy. Who in the world does that? It's like a X rated circus funhouse.
It's weird enough I sincerely hope management reads this and removes the mirrors from at least 3 of the 4 walls.
Maybe at minimum remove the wall to wall mirrors in the stall???
I really wanted it to be a good experience since we went to celebrate my son's 21st birthday and invited my parents. There was no one to greet us and no table ready for our reservation though the place was fairly empty. It seemed that there was no one really in charge and it was disorganized. The food was fine, but very expensive for our overall experience. There was a large party that hired an Austin Powers impersonator to entertain them during their dinner which made our conversation very difficult. Overall, it was too expensive for the quality of dining experience that we had. Disappointed. And, this is my first negative review of a restaurant EVER!
Visited Okura with friends; we ordered sushi to share. Service was a little slow to begin with; it took a while to get drinks and have the server take our order. But once the order was placed, food service was very fast. Everything was delicious. Overall it was a fun atmosphere to catch up with friends.
We have been eating at Okuta since it opened. We were always so impressed with the great quality of the sushi. Top grade fish. Now, not so much. The quality has gone down significantly. The sushi was terrible, the service was terrible, and we were very disappointed. Clearly it is changed ownership. The original owner isn't there anymore and no one knows who she is. If you want to eat at Okra and have excellent quality sushi, I recommend their original location in Palm Desert which is still run by the original owner who has very high standards.
Food service was very slow.
Ordered beef skewer which arrived well done,
supposed to be medium, they put in new order
which never came. Al I had to eat for dinner was a small bowl of rice. (size was 1/2 cup).
Our waitress did not even know this happened and tried to charge us for the beef skewer, we had to explain to her what happened, she blamed the food server. :(
Service was disorganized and just flat incompetent. No one at front desk on arrival so the bartender told us to seat ourselves and they would bring menus. After ten plus minutes I went back to the front to check in and ask for menus. Five minutes later they arrived. And then couldn't get anyone to take our order. Finally got drinks about 35 minutes after arriving at a half empty restaurant and first course maybe 45 minutes.
Most of the food was ordinary but one dish was just inedible with leathery avocado you had to cut with a knife.
When any staff did interact they were pleasant. But never felt ''this ignored in a restaurant before. And the food didn't make up for it. Ambiance is casual but nice.
Wouldn't go back.
Very mediocre sushi. Rice (any sushi nut will tell you this is the crucial factor in good sushi) was sticky and not good. The eel was served cold, not warm from broiler - this is bad form and laziness. This is a nice place, but don't expect more than mediocre sushi.
We sat in the bar area as they were having "all-night" happy hour. The menu was varied and the prices good, but some of the flavors were lacking. The salmon sushi was kind of firm, not the usual melt -in-your -mouth experience that I'm used to. The garlic edamame were outstanding. The rocket shrimp and the tofu were also very nice. The green tea ice cream was lovely and big enough to share. The service was exceptional, attentive and well appreciated! Overall would recommend.
As local Laguna Beach residents, we have been to Okura Robata Grill and Sushi Bar at least
10 times, and have always enjoyed their delicious and creative sushi rolls, but this was not one of their better nights. They were definitely off their game service wise on our recent visit. We made reservations and were promptly seated at a table upon arrival, and then ignored for at least twenty minutes. They weren't even that busy, maybe half full, but at least six staff members walked by our table continuously, and not one even looked at us. I practically had to trip a server to ask who will be our server, and he said he would find out and return. He told us who our server would be, and served us two waters while we waited longer. When he realized we still had no server, he came back and took our drink and sushi orders. The kitchen was very slow as well this particular night, and it seemed like we waited a long time for our food, although it was excellent when it arrived. They have an excellent all you can eat sushi special menu, at $36.95 per person, which the entire table must order if you decide to go that route. The price has gone up some for that special, and although it isn't the bargain it once was, it still is a very good value.
My kids had raved about Okura and we have been going for some time. This last time the service was just ok and it was the first time a couple of us did not order sushi. The food was good but not great. The bar area is very nice and the ambiance is good. It is not a first choice but is a very good place in Laguna.
My buddy and I are no strangers to good sushi. We sat at the sushi bar and were pleasantly surprised that the chef was able to make us some special dishes that normally would not be on the regular sushi menu. All the food was very fresh and tasteful. The sake was reasonably priced and good quality, though we would have preferred some other brands and some sochu (which they did not have), we were nevertheless very please with the experience.
I booked a dinner for two for me and my fiancé birthday. The service was awful! The quality of the sushi was terrible as well! A very disappointing experience. The sushi rolls consisted of stuffed imitation crag and very little fish (sushi). I will be following up with the manager. I would not recommend this location to anyone! Horrible!
The food was quite good. But, when adding a comment to a reservation through your site that this was a birthday dinner, one should not have to remind the wait staff at the restaurant in front of their guests. What then is the purpose of the reservation comment section? Restaurant staff need to read the reservation notes.
Food was good - very fresh sushi, beautifully presented. However, the service was very hit and miss, meaning the sushi chefs and the jack of all trades bartender were great, but our server was very inattentive. There were a ton of little flys around the sushi bar, and the whole place had a bit of an odd smell. Probably won't make an effort to go back.
In the past okura was always a favorite or mine and my families. The last time we were there for a birthday occasion, our food cane intermittently, the service was horrible and the noise was beyond bearable. Okura in the future may be my last choice for sushi 😞
