What is Okonomiyaki?

Okonomiyaki is basically a “pancake” consisting of flour, egg, cabbage and mountain yams, with ingredients which you can choose off our menu. Once cooked the okonomiyaki is topped off with okonomiyaki sauce, a Japanese version of plum sauce, a mayonnaise sauce, seaweed powder and dried bonito flakes.

Okonomiyaki Chibo opened in Hawaii in 1990. Chibo is part of a popular chain in Japan with over 60 locations. Recently locations have been opened in Hanoi, Bangkok and Manila. We specialize in Okonomiyaki and Teppanyaki.

Made a last minute reservation, which the woman we initially encountered couldn’t find on the handwritten list (understandably). I told her it was a last minute reservation through OpenTable, to which I thought she would go look on a tablet or something. She just kept saying she didn’t see my name on the list. But, I saw our spot reserved so it was honestly a bit frustrating because I felt like she wasn’t listening to me or she could have checked with someone else. Then a man came over and took care of it/seated us. After that, service was great. It was a little awkward after the chef was done cooking our meal because he just had to stand there and basically watch us eat. Both chefs seemed like they were from Japan and didn’t speak very good English, otherwise I think they would have conversated more (our older chef was having a long conversation with the older Japanese couple that was seated at the teppanyaki table with us before we were seated) so I think it’s mostly a language barrier that kept it from being a more personable experience. Food was a little expensive, but you’re also paying for the experience. I liked the okonomiyaki from Japan better, but it was still good.

Our favorite place to go for okonomiyaki and teppanyaki. Got to enjoy appetizers during happy hour. Nice selection of sakes. Love the green tea ice cream and yuzu sorbet. Great service as usual. We come every time we are in Waikiki

Definitely recommend reservations if possible. Fun teppanyaki counter dinner! We visited mostly for the okonomiyaki and it was fun to watch our dish being made. Also ordered a grilled ahi set. Good food, great quality.

We had a lovely dinner with my parents. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We sincerely appreciate that they made our group of 6 all feel welcome and even celebrated my daughter’s recent birthday. We visited this restaurant twice in February of 2020 and loved it so we knew we had to come back for more.

We requested seats by the teppan so we can watch our food being cooked. If you go before 6pm happy hour best deal. Sake flight is a good way to sample varieties from sweet to dry.

We reserved ahead of time but it was about closing time so there was only another party of 2 there. Perhaps that’s why the servers were all very attentive. We went with a table instead of the teppanyaki station and the bar, yet I wasn’t entirely comfortable since we were seated so close to the cashier/supplies shelf/servers’ cause the lack of proximity and privacy. The food was excellent! We had the Surf and Turf set with an extra order of the Okonomiyaki CHIBO (rule of thumb: always the shop signature first to see why its deserve the store name 💖) LOVE LOVE LOVE. Literally cannot have enough of the Prime Rib because the chef def hit our medium rare request. Saw a review somewhere else that their garlic fried rice was mediocre BUT it reminded me of my mom’s fried rice - the way each grain of rice is coated with that flavorful and eggy layer. The only reason we have to left some its only because I was SO FULL (i swear I hate to have waste such good fried rice). Dessert feels homemade and nice. I also appreciate that even though its passed closing hour (we were the last seated at 8:15), they didnt try to rush us at all, except for when all of a suddenly a server went to out table, looked me straight in the eye and stress me out a tiny bit (tmi while I was guiltily eating a heaping spoon of fried rice with the communal spoon and felt busted lol (they didnt say anyth about that and to be fair we didnt have any spoon and I didnt want them to have to wash them extra) Nice experience though! Regret not taking the teppanyaki station but theres always next time!

日本ではお好み焼きのチェーンというイメージが強いですが、ホノルル店の鉄板焼きは絶品で、ハワイに来たら必ず立ち寄ります。ガーリックシュリンプやフィレステーキが非常に美味しいです。席が狭く椅子が硬いのがやや難点。

I think 30$ for an okonomiyaki is a bit expensive till I realized see my wife and I split only one and took the other home. They are rather thick so if you're not starving then just split it and add the garlic rice.
