    MICHELIN 1 Star2024

From the OpenTable editors: At this Michelin-starred restaurant, omakase is transformed into an immersive theater of food, inspired by chef Takuya Matsuda's love for Cirque du Soleil. A black curtain is raised to mark the beginning of a 20-course odyssey featuring premium seafood sourced locally and imported from Japan. The serene, minimalist setting keeps the focus on the drama unfolding behind the sushi counter.

We had a lovely time. I went with my partner to celebrate our birthday (yes, we share the same birthdate). This was my second time and my partner's first time. The night was incredible. You receive about 25 different dishes that range from being a small bite to a few bites to consume. Think tasting menu. Almost every bite we had was perfect. My partner struggled to pick their favourite bite. The one dish we didn't like was some sort of cucumber, black bean, and fermented paste dish. I believe it was meant to be a palate cleanser, but it soured the meal for us a little. Quite literally every other bite brought joy though. The ambience is a little odd as it is bar seating and they are consistently giving you food every few minutes. There is music playing the whole time and you feel like you are apart of the show. It's like being in a "4D" cooking movie, except you are truly immersed. Price wise, it was about $680 for the two of us not including tips or getting any drinks. You can tell from each bite that the quality of ingredients being used is likely making the meal worth it. I also think if you consider the restaurant as more of an experience than a meal, that the value is there. I wouldn't recommend this outside of special occasions though (unless you just make enough money to casually spend that much on dinner). ***Birthday note*** As staff were informed it was our birthday, they were very excited. Apparently it was the first time they had a couple come with the exact same birthday. As a little treat for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. they add a little wafer plaque to your dessert saying "Happy Birthday [name]" and one of the hospitality staff will play happy birthday on an instrument. Overall, the place is exactly what you can expect: A curated dining experience featuring the highest grade of ingredients and authentic trained chefs, and staff who show care and love in the work they do.

Highly recommend the Ochakase (Tea) experience. What a spectacular experience. It was a performance by the chefs and all the servers were lovely. Food and tea pairings were so delicious and special. Felt like we had been transported to Japan in the middle of Yaletown. Great for a special occasion. Reservations required.

This is as close as you can get to a Japanese omakase without going to Japan yourself, highly recommend!

As someone who visits an Omakase in every city I visit, this is hands down the best. Clearly a reason why they have a Michelin star. The experience and the full spread were phenomenal.

I looked for new places to try on this trip to Vancouver. I usually end up at the same places every time so this time I decided to try new places. Sushi Okeya Kyujiro is a one-star Michelin restaurant, so I was eagerly looking forward to my visit. Located in Yaletown on Mainland St, it is an intimate space with a small waiting area. The servers are dressed in kimono and greet you at the entrance. You’re led into the U-shaped bar and there are black screens hiding the chefs and the workspace from the diners. Once all diners have been seated and served their choice of drinks the screens rise, and the performance begins. Lunch consists of 15 courses for $180CAD. Dinner consists of 20 courses for $325CAD. I went for lunch as that was the reservation I could secure on the desired date. Each course is a piece of art, and you are requested to consume it within 10 seconds of it being presented to you. The waitresses explain each item as they’re presented. There is a main chef and two subsidiary chefs working on the pieces of sushi. The first course was a trio of appetizers, followed by chawanmushi, then 8 pieces of nigiri sushi, a bowl of ikura and crabmeat, a bowl of soba with pieces of Waygu, then a piece of makisushi, and a slice of tamago. The finale was dessert consisting of red bean with mochi and a green tea ice cream sandwich. I had two glasses of beer (one rice, the other yuzu) with my meal. Interestingly, there are no menus … The waitresses explain the five kinds of beer, and the different wines and sake available. The total came to $220.05CAD + tip. This was arguably the finest omakase I’ve experienced. I can’t wait to try dinner and there are locations in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto so my next visit might be in Montreal.
