Food for this special Christmas day, was ok not great. Buffett style. I believe I was overcharged.
The perfect Christmas dinner! We especially loved the smoked turkey. Thank you so much!
We do like this place but, my fried chicken was overcooked and dry, her pulled pork poutine was oversalted. love the lavende-rita, my new favorite drink.
Came for Thanksgiving almost st the end of the evening, 8:00 so there was room inside and that was nice - cozy, rustic and casual dress which is what our family wanted that night. Good food and good service by friendly people who were still "on" after working the holiday and they made us feel very welcome. Food was good. Didn't know the turkey dinner would be buffet style but they did a good job keeping things hot and well-stocked. And a good value too.
Just can't recommend this Rest. Very disappointed with their Thanksgiving turkey meal. It looked like the turkey was from a deli. Each slice was exactly the same and placed in a hot pan. Very salty. And they gave you a dinner plate that was the size of a salad plate. Huh? It was a buffet so you could go back. But boy was it bad. The dessert pumpkin pie had to have been frozen pies like you would get at a grocery store. Terrible. Even with the small plates we couldn't go back to fill up. So Friday we went to Marie Calendars and had a really good turkey meal. Wasted $109.00. I'm not complaining about the service or the employees. They were good.
We had a great thanksgiving family dinner here. The food and service were great.
Thanks to the Deer Lodge staff for providing a wonderful holiday meal.
Nice place to visit, food was good, service was nice, but t hey forgot about us for a long time, probably would have ordered more drinks if they came around a second time. By the time they did come around we were ready to go.
Eclectic atmosphere, old, local favorite. Worth the drive from wherever you are. Pricey, but worth it.
Dinner was fantastic! Under new ownership and the menu was great. Almost everything is now farm to table. Excellent ambiance. Service was also good -- so much better than it used to be with the old ownership. Must try!
Nice staff but an hours wait for food and an indifferent wine and beer choice.
Our server was very attentive and the food was great. There were 4 of us, we each had something different and it was all really good. I highly recommend it.
The ambience is very cool & great for casual get togethers or romantic events. The food was very delicious. We had the Prime Rib, Fish & Chips, & Salmon and the Green Beans for appetizer. All was very tasty!
I love this place! The atmosphere is great, food fabulous...off the beaten path!!
We came here for dinner during the Ojai Music Festival. They have a great outdoor seating area and service was prompt and on point. We had the scallops as an appetizer and they were really delicious - cooked exactly right. We then had the arugula salad (it was an italian style arugula, bread, cheese, veggies, etc salad) that was also really good. The green beans, although fried, were also really delicious (they were a side order). The only downer was the vegan burger which just fell flat - it wasn't bad but it also wasn't great and we wouldn't order agian...
We have been to the Deer Lodge several times. In previous visits we had found it to be so-so, but the past few times, we've found it to be greatly improved. The Mary's fried chicken is delicious. And we all love the Manhattans.
I live in the neighborhood so regardless of the poor service and food preparation I will continue to come here for the music/ambiance and scene. I came here for brunch w/ a friend - we had a reservation (obviously) which was honored no worries. However the service was sooooo slow everything took hours. We were forgotten about constantly. Considering there were many workers, none of them seemed to have a clue what was going on or any answers to the questions we asked in regards to the menu or beers, they'd leave to go check and never return until we flagged down another person, who couldn't help us and they'd leave to find our server, then never return. It sort of became a running joke with our crew.
The menu sounds so good! I wish the execution was there. I had the frittata which was so overdone it had an skin of about 1/4" along the bottom. The breakfast potatoes were overdone and old tasting, like the whole meal had been forgotten about under a heat lamp for 1/2 hour, which was probably true!
Last time I was at the DL I ordered the Buffalo burger, sounds so good! But it was so salty I could not eat it. Fries were burnt/overdone. I've had the friend chicken too which sounds so good, but doesn't taste like anything special at all..It could be so much more special. very underwhelming.
I really think someone should help train the cooks on some standards for food, b/c something is just not right -- but the foundation is there!!
This was our 6th visit to the Ojai Deer Lodge. We try to eat there whenever we find ourselves in Ojai. It's wonderful every time! We had the special salad, grilled cheese with bacon and truffle fries. All delicious and the portions are always quite generous. In the past we've enjoyed the burgers, mac & cheese and other salads. We've never been disappointed and plan to visit again!
Nice place for a drink, but the food was disappointing.
Fun and funky place with surprisingly good food. Had a great time.
This is an "iconic" Ojai landmark restaurant and we were looking forward to dining there. Unfortunately we were very disappointed in the quality of the steaks we ordered.
The band was great! The service was lacking, and the food was just ok.
Vibrant atmosphere, very casual. Tasty food. Lots of families the night we were there with kids running around, playing on the stage etc. We don't mind that, but it wouldn't be our choice for a romantic dinner. Friendly attentive service, and tasty food.
Sunday afternoon lunch. Country music was excellent, but much too loud. Ate outside because of music. Daughter is on glutin free diet, so asked if she could have a tortilla instead bun for her tri-tip sandwich. Kitchen said no and gave her a "glutin-free" bun instead...without asking. Strange, as breakfast menu has tortillas.
Overall...Service the best!
Ambiance wonderful. Reminded us of Topanga Canyon, our home for 45 years until three years ago.
This was our favorite restaurant in Ojai!
Even though the service could use some work and the menu was minimal, the place was awesome and we'll definitely be back.
I've been eating here for years. Because of the owner I will write this review. But, I don't want you to know about this place. It's not to crowded but if you and your friends show up it may get to crowded. Seriously, this is a great place to go. You can go but please do not tell anyone else about it.
The hostess was polite and nice. When they sat use they told us the wait for most of the food items will take about 30 minutes, but the BBQ items would be shorter. It was do to the small kitchen they had. Other than wait time everything was great. It was a beautiful day and tons of bikers coming and going making it something interesting to watch. Now I must go and buy a motorcycle.
The lodge had a nice feel and we were excited to try it. When we walked in there was plenty of tables and we had a reservation. We told the hostess we wanted to sit inside and she said they didn't have any place for us to sit. We did not ask for outside seating and it was windy outside. She finally gave us a table right by the door in the middle of the room. Then when others came in right after us she sat them inside immediately. We couldn't understand because we were really nice to her too.
Our waiter was nice but rushed (Of course it was the night before Valentines day). I ordered the flat iron steak and it was refrigerator cold when I got it and sent it back. They warmed it for a second and when I ate it was as tough as leather (not a good quality steak and not sure it was flat iron). My husband got the pork chops and they had no flavor and so tough he could barely chew it. Only thing that was good was the drinks and live music. Maybe a better place to visit for lunch and get a hamburger only.
The Deer Lodge was packed on a Saturday night, and for good reason: They had some great live music, a rustic lodge dating back to 1932, and a terrific selection of beer, wine and booze. And the food is actually pretty good - once it finally arrives!
We sat down at about 7:15 pm, and didn't receive our main courses until almost 8:45 pm; that's right, almost an hour and a half!
Sure, our drinks and first courses came out fairly fast, but we were repeatedly told they had a "small kitchen" and that the orders were backing up.
Oddly, some diners at a nearby table who came in long after we did, (and left before we did), got their food very quickly, though our server, Patrick, explained that away by stating that my entree, the Filet Mignon, took longer to cook than other dishes. Sorry, but it just doesn't wash. How long does it take to grill a steak? 10, 15 minutes?!?
In fairness, some of our table's dishes came out 10-15 minutes ahead of mine and my wife's, though that was another odd part of the evening: our friends felt awkward eating ahead of us, though we insisted they to so.
In fairness, they did, voluntarily, deduct 20% from our tab, AND bought us desserts, in an effort to atone for the unseemly delay, and I WOULD probably give them another chance, but only because the food itself was pretty darned good, and the live entertainment (Danny McGaw) was just great; in fact we told Danny (and even HE noticed how long it was taking for us to get served our food!) that listening to him made the wait tolerable! (He's there every Sat. night.)
We noticed a pending "change of ownership" sign in the window, and one can only hope that the new owners either shake things up in the kitchen, or make the kitchen LARGER!
We visit Ojai often on weekends. The Deer Lodge is a great find. Good drinks, good food and a kitschy atmosphere. A must try when you're in the area.
Honestly didn't expect much walking into the place but we were blown away by the food best fried chicken I have ever had. Service was outstanding and the Lavender cheesecake...really I don't even like lavender (wifes favorite) was amazing.
Next time we are in Ojai we will be back.
I've been going to the Deer Lodge for decades. It's changed hands a couple times recently and the menu has become more and more limited. My favorite side, sweet potato fries, as well as regular fries, are off the menu. The truffle fries are uninspiring. I keep trying, but I just don't like them. Others share my view. The hamburgers are still very good. All in all the food is good and tasty and a good value for the price. I just don't go as often as I used to go.
I Made reservations for my children and myself for dinner. We showed up at our reservation time and our table was waiting for us. The service was great and the food was excellent. I ordered the pork chop and My kids had T-bone steak with mashed potatoes and veggies. We where extremely surprised by the musical talent on hand which happened to be, I believe his name was Jeff Uzzel. He seemed to really accommodate the children's interest with his tasty tunes. We would definitely recommend The Ojai Deer Lodge to Everyone and will definitely be back!!!
Part road house, part cabin in the woods part TOP CHEF food! A fireplace, comfy and welcoming staff and food that is TO DIE FOR. Great BBQ and comfort food galore! Mac and cheese with smoked gouda and bacon? YES! EVERYTHING WAS GREAT!
Been there 3 times. Alway have 40 to 45 minute wait for our food. Waitress this time was
very inattentive, using her phone, gossiping with fellow employees, we had to ask for a dessert
menu, took her over 15 minutes to get back to us, we just left. Never going back.
We sat next to the fireplace and a office Xmas party sat on the other side of us. There was great live music (solo guitar/singer). Decorated for Xmas. Great food, wine and beer selection.
My husband and I had a great time! We will definitely be going back !!! Great food great service and all around wonderful place. Our server Rob was fantastic!!!! It was our 1st time there. It would be great To go there during the summertime and sit on the patio area . The restaurant has been around since 1938 it must be doing something right . We are so glad we tried it out .
Great food, great cocktails, good ambiance! Went for anniversary dinner - dimly lit dining area made it cozy and private. And a short drive from Ventura area!
I am very much an outdoor person and thus when I encountered the Deer Lodge as a place to eat, I knew without doubt that this would be a great place to go while visiting in OJAI. And, it was awesome! The food, the service, the setting. I can see it is a popular hang-outs for the locals and that is what I like too!
