Oceanaire Seafood Room - Minneapolis Ratings and Reviews
We visited Oceanaire for our second time, both for my birthday. The biggest difference between the two visits was the service. Two years ago when we dined there, my wife and I felt like we were the only people there. The waiter walked us through every step of ordering, every item on the menu and just in general made us feel like VIP's. This visit was very different. The waiter read the menu like he was a server at a chain restaurant, not one where you're spending the amount that we did this night. What was even more disappointing was seeing him walk past our table many times to go to his other tables and talk extensively, laughing and joking with them. Were they his friends? Long time customers? Big spenders? Was it the fact that we ordered water instead of some $14 cocktail? The food was very good, just like the last time we attended, but even there revealed flaws in the service. Our waiter told us that if we ordered items in the "simply prepared" section of the menu, we'd probably want "2 or 3" side items. We ordered one, the hashbrowns, because we had appetizers (the oysters rockefeller and house salad). Well lo and behold, both of our entrees came with mashed potatoes. Now, both versions of the potatoes were good, but multiple starches probably weren't needed. Did he do this to drive up our bill? I hope and think not, but I feel this is probably another instance of the waiter not caring enough to go in depth with the menu so he could go be with his other table. We still enjoyed our dinner and will most likely be back, but if given the chance, will request to be in our first waiter's section.
Love the art deco "steamship" décor. Cocktails were substantial. Noise level seemed high on arrival, but once seated we had no trouble with conversation. Martinis in the bar while waiting (briefly) for our table were substantial. Seafood - crab cakes, grilled monkfish and "Dynamite" crab - were all very good and well prepared. Seared duck breast was nicely done as well. Sides of creamed corn and Brussel's sprouts were plentiful - just one would have been adequate. The wait staff were knowledgeable and pleasant. Enjoyed our evening and will return.
Oceanaire lives in the category of "you get what you pay for" type of restaurant. It is a splurge, to be sure... but it lives up to the expectations.
It's a sexy space with seafood flown in that day and impeccable service. You're not going to go here everyday, but when you do you need to know that you're going to spend a lot of money... and it will be worth it.
We were a party of eight celebrating three birthdays and an anniversary. With an 8-year old and 9-year old at the table too everything went fantastic. The food was nothing short of amazing! Best seafood ever had by all this far from the coast. The steak was also extremely delicious and prepared perfectly. Beer and wine selection was good but a pomegranate martini was the only disappointment. Dessert was awesome—baked Alaska is highly recommended. Service was slow at times but we hardly noticed because we were so busy enjoying our company.
Disappointing, though it may be due to the end-of-year- business parties that crowded the room. Noise level was high, the food service delayed (our server apologized repeatedly, even bringing clam chowder gratis), and the food itself disappointing; it looked good, but taste was missing. Perhaps good seafood in Minneapolis is an oxymoron. And don't expect good oysters- there were 4 or 5 locales available, asked for the saltiest, received small & bland. A disappointing start to a long night. One of our party had a recent birthday, our server (Michael) suggested an "on-the-house" and delivered a beautiful baked Alaska with flair and flavor. A nice gesture, but we left feeling disappointed.
The service was painfully slow & the wait to be seated was unexpected since we had a reservation . We typically have very attentive servers when we dine here so the 15-25 min wait for cocktails & refills was very disappointing. The server seemed to be avoiding us & appeared annoyed when we wanted order before he was ready . There were a few large parties dining that night & we were a party of twelve celebrating my husband’s 40th birthday . Overall , all of the guests in my group were not impressed with the service but did enjoy the food .
Oceanaire has declined some in recent years. The oysters Rockefeller were small and covered in sprouts (who does that?); the seafood salad was ok but generally bland; and the crab cakes (previously the best in town) are now somewhat bland as well. The Ahi Tuna was good and was cooked perfectly, and the wine list is solid, if overpriced. If you want to spend $250/couple for dinner, there are better places in town to do it.
We were greeted very warmly at the front desk. We started at the bar for a drink and appetizers before our reservation, but we sat there for about 15 minutes before anyone helped us. Once we got to our table the service was much better. Dinner was amazing! Our server was very knowledgeable. I was a little surprised that my husband didn’t get a dessert for his birthday, i would have thought that that little of an expense would have been part of the experience. I would go back for a date with my husband, but not for any sort of special occasion. It didn’t feel very special. Otherwise it was a great dinner!
The food was incredible and the service was amazing! I was a little nervous to bring my two toddler nephews into such a lovely place but everyone was so kind. Even the manager, Nathan, stopped by to welcome us and interact with the kids. Thank you for an extraordinary dining experience.
As I had written to Oceanaire, we were there to celebrate my wifes birthday and the last meal one would not want messed up at our table, was messed up.
As a seafood restaurant, her fish was so overcooked it was hard (we ended up sharing mine). They did take her meal off our bill and the Mgr brought out chocolate martinis to go with a flame dessert. Both kind and generous offers, but in the end way too much sweets when we were there for my wifes favorite meal...fish.
We had planned this date night months in advance and made reservations for 7:30. When we arrived, we were told they were running behind schedule, 25 minutes later we finally got a table that was in the bar. It was very loud, so it was hard to have a conversation without feeling like we were yelling at each other. Our server was also a bartender and she was extremely busy, so the service was very slow. The food was amazing! It just wasn’t the dining experience we were expecting. My suggestion if you are making a reservation is to be asked to sit in the dining room, not the bar area.
Great food all around, the scallops were perfectly cooked and the crab cakes are amazing. My son ordered the King Crab and enjoyed all 1 lbs. of them! The staff was outstanding and were extremely generous to crack the King Crab for my son. It's a bit pricy for seafood, but it was worth it for my wife's birthday!
Every year during the holidays we have a special lunch at Oceanaire with our nieces. The food is great, and going there is a real treat. Our server was delightful and funny, and he offered good suggestions. The food is always spectacular, and this was no exception. The pureed squash soup with crab can improve any bad mood. We love Oceanaire.
Beautiful restaurant! I was slightly disappointed because I felt slightly forgotten about. I was dining on my own while traveling for business. The server was very friendly but I was always the last table to receive any service. Overall, it took almost 2 hours from the time I walked in to when I walked out. My salad alone took 20 minutes. I had to wait another 15 after I finished my salad for a medium rare petite filet. I ordered a second glass of wine and it didn't even come until after my meal was finished. The steak was melt in your mouth delicious - prepared exactly the way I love it. The seafood salad wasn't exactly what I wanted and I really only had 3 or 4 bites from it. The truffle mash was excellent. Next time I return, I will be sure not to go alone, hopefully that will garner more attention from my server. If you are a seafood lover, and steak for that matter, you should be very happy with your meal.
The bartender seemed aggressive towards our waitress. When our martinis (raspberry lemon) were not made correctly we asked our waitress if they could be fixed. I watched her take the drinks back to him and he said they didn't have anything raspberry and she brought us the drinks as is back to us. Found it unprofessional and felt bad for our waitress who was clearly uncomfortable by the aggressive bartender. Thank you!
We were a bit disappointed in the service. One meal came out cold. We were shorted on the oysters we ordered and one of our sides came out after we were half way done with our meals. The manager made it up to us and we left as happy customers. Good was great.
