Ocean Aire is a very fine restaurant and it is also VERY expensive. $40 or more is a lot to pay for a piece of grilled fish over polenta or potatoes. I had oysters Rockfeller as an appetizer. They were very tasty, but in 3 of the 5 shells I didn't find the oyster and I suspect that the oyster meat was served to someone ordering on the half shell. My wife's main course scallops were advertized as being over asparagus, but she only found traces of asparagus. The service was a bit slow. We didn't get the wine that we ordered shortly after arrival (which the waiter had to come back and ask us to remind him of which one we had ordered) until we had finished the appetizers. When one is spending nearly $200/couple for a dinner, one expects better service and to actually find oysters in the Rockefeller shells and asparagus under the scallops.
This business lunch started with the dismissive and rude attitude of the host. Just seconds before I offered my name, the host was joking and jovial with two ridiculously loud gents. Take a lesson OceanAire: there are other wonderful seafood restaurants in DC without the machismo, discourteous and insulting practice at the door. You can bet that I intend to share this incident with all the other women who throw down our Black and platinum cards. Time's up.
We were completely upsold on an entree without any warning or agreement. We were stuffed into a corner table that was not comfortable when I had called in days earlier requesting a booth. The bill came out and the waiter noticed it was wrong after I gave my credit card - so he just added in the missing dish and ran my card anyway.
The food was overall very tasty.
I had the John Dory. Fish was a soggy not flaky and the spinach etc. the fish laid on was simply a mess, very oily. Oyster Rockefeller were just OK. Oysters were flat as pancakes and over cooked. My wife had the lobster tail tempura which were also soggy and the lobster not fresh but mushy. All in all very disappointing. Please get the grill and fryer set at the correct temperature, cut the oil and pay attention.
Memorable evening. Steakhouse feel with seafood featured. Menu was extensive and food was excellent. Service was a highpoint... Giovanni was a star! The manager, Eric, was a pro at handling a vintage discrepancy on the wine list. One minor negative is the fairly "raw" James Joyce quote on the wall near the bar. So many other Joyce quotes about the sea... not sure why this one.

Service was exemplary! I had scallops which were beautifully served and very tasty. The scallops were very large, served with a delicious sauce. My husband had swordfish AI poivre which was equally delicious. Wines by the glass were plentiful and good. A winner all around.
Beautiful restaurant, but food was disappointing. My 2 friends and I enjoyed the Brussel sprouts and the wedge salad, but the truffle mashed potatoes and the lobster bisque were flavorless. We did not finish them. Two of us had crab cakes, and they were OK, but overpriced at $39.00 for two small, not well-flavored cakes. I don't mind paying for good food, but this was not worth it.
Great location. I was disappointed that they regularly change the wine list and the Chardonnay I had previously and loved was not available. The one I had was fine. My brothers cocktail was “perfect” but he had to send back his first glass of wine (waiter didn’t let him taste it first); the second glass was fine. The scallops in my shellfish mixed grill melted in my mouth and my brothers crab cake and mussels were amazing. The ceviche mixto was a good surprise. I wish we’d known how big the deserts were. It’ll take days to finish mine. All in all a pleasant evening despite the huge bill.
This was my first time dining at Oceanaire. I had dinner with my girlfriend and my mother a few nights ago and found that Oceanaire did a good job providing a downtown dining experience that was convenient for my girlfriend and I to walk from our K Street offices and my mother to walk from her hotel. The food was good and the atmosphere was sufficiently private to allow for good conversation without overhearing the conversation of other diners at nearby tables.
The prices were a little steep but not out of line with other peer establishments in this city. The portions were appropriate considering the price point and weren't so large as to necessitate taking leftovers home with you.
Went on Saturday night of restaurant week. Each of the 3 courses had numerous choices, which was great. My clam chowder was more like a stew..so chock full of clams and potatoes. My husband enjoyed the large, local oysters. Main course...crab cake for me and swordfish for him came out hit and flavorful. We had creamed corn as a side...more corn in a cream sauce with firm multicolored kernels. Desert was yummy...key lime pie...filling was whipped and the crust was so buttery. Our waiter, Matt, was great.
