Fabulous night. Good and service impeccable!
Pleasant atmosphere, attentive staff and excellent food made for a very nice dining experience before our evening entertainment at the Kennedy Center!
A DC classic. Well prepared food. Great for business, date, special occasions, lunch or dinner.
Crab cakes were excellent - 95 % crabmeat. Excellent service and the bread pudding for dessert was wonderful.
Poor and inattentive service matched with food that was too big and messy to be eaten properly. The waiter needs a refresher course, pace of service was too slow for lunch on Tuesday. We didn’t deserve to be ignored.
Unfortunately we selected the lamb special for two. It was very fatty, not a good cut at all and the taste was poor. Other choices might have been better. Service was great.
Exceptional service. More than ample portions but delicious with handsome presentation. The scallops were superb as was the NY steak.
From the moment we walked in the door, the experience was wonderful. We were greeted by outstanding staff, served a delicious meal and enjoyed an elegant setting. There were three of us and we had halibut, steak and duck ... each of us thought our meal was fantastic. You can't go wrong.
Quiet, tasty food, nice choice of entrees. Waite staff professional. Good for meetings and conversation.
Very nice restaurant. Service was so much lower than expected. Pricey for what it offered, But food was very good.
I went here for my 40th birthday and it was amazing! I had a great time with friends and the food was great. Be prepared to spend 100’s, but it’s worth it for the special occasion.
Friend visiting from out of state — wanted iconic DC restaurant. We did not leave disappointed
great location, beautiful food, knowledgable waiter, quick service, lovely decor, overall a wonderful dining experience right next door to our beautiful hotel
Waiter was fantastic as usual but the food this evening was sub par. I had the Halibut that tasted really good but it was on the dry side. My wife had the Lump Crab cakes that were not edible, no lump crab meat and has a funky taste to them She said they were not good, I tasted and she was correct, bad/weird taste, no lump crab meat. Our friend has another fish dish , the special, she said poor at best. I have been to this restaurant numerous times but this time it was bad. Very surprising.
I went to the Occidental over 50 years ago. It is a Washington landmark. It continues a very fine tradition.
Fantastic experience in a very quintessential DC restaurant. The history inside is amazing. Service was impeccable.
The food is so so good and the atmosphere is fantastic. The octopus was the best cooked I've had and I'm dying to try the short ribs. As always the Occidental's historical and unique pictures make it so much fun to go to. My one gripe would be that the drink prices are ridiculous compared to the food prices. The halibut is one of the more expensive dishes and it's delicious but to find halibut for cheaper in any restaurant would be impossible. So the food is fantastic value but $18 for a drink is a bit ridiculous. If the Occidental took it's drink prices down I'd be there for dinner multiple times a month. It also puts me off to bring a larger party there especially for business because if everyone has 2 cocktails for 6 that's over $200! I understand restaurants make a good profit on booze but this is excess. If the martini was big I'd understand but nope it's the typical small one.
Always great. Been there for many special occasions over the years
service and food was very poor. this was a VDAY celebration and I would never return nor recommend to anyone. very disappointing
The Valentines prefix dinner was not that great. They ran out of one of the appetizers and we were left to just choose from octopus (good), liver and bone marrow.. not that appealing. The other dishes were mediocre. I would probably go back but just to try the standard menu. They were so busy that the drinks took like 30 minutes.
Second time here, still not impressed. Overrated. Overpriced. Went Valentine’s Day. Limited menu selection were not imaginative. Food temp was too cold. Server was horrible.
It was a valentine's day dinner ad there was no decoration, flowers ,candles in the restaurant. The bright, white light kill the atmosphere.
The main course, fish with crab was dry and without a side dish. Few vegetables would have been nice.
Packaging for take home is plastic, not eco friendly.
Great place for special occasion. Very historic as well.
My server, Hannah, was excellent! Will be going back soon.
My husband liked the foie gras appetizer. My seared tuna had little flavor. Skillet of cornbread was a highlight. Short ribs had good flavor, tender. Only drawback was the mush it came with was rather indistinct. Avoid the crab cakes. Fun guessing who is who in the photo gallery. Great if you're going to the National Theater, excellent parking.
Overall restaurant was great and we enjoyed our dinner. The steaks were awesome! I did wish they had a wine expert to assist with food pairing.
Great dinner and the service made the evening even more special. We will definitely put OCCIDENT on our DC dining list.
The duck was fantastic as attested by the 3 of 4 at our table who ordered it. The filet was cooked to perfection. Our drinks were prepared to expectation and were quiet tasty. Our server, Tim, was fantastic. He was there when we needed him and was quite personable. The desserts were exquisite. I highly recommend Occidental for any special occasion, or just anything.
"I love the comfortable dining room and bar. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The rockfish was amazing and the petite crab cake was refreshing. Everyone loved the seafood gumbo. Service was well-timed and friendly.
The main thing that stuck out was the service. it was amazing! The host/hostess, the waiter, the manager were all very polite, friendly, and welcoming. Now, on to the food. This restaurant creates a special menu for Restaurant week so all of the options that are on the RW week are not necessarily on the regular menu. An example is the seafood gumbo which I got as an appetizer. It was a small portion but it was very good! They should add that to the menu. The cornbread with comes with all meals as the bread option is large and also good. The braised short rib was very tender and flavorful. The brussel sprouts were not the best I have had but they were good. And the dessert was a chocolate bar with amaretto caramel and a small scoop of ice cream. i liked it because it was not overly sweet. I enjoyed the food and my experience and would certainly go again if for no other reason than great service.
What a nice restaurant.I loved all the photos and food was great
I enjoyed dining here. Perfect for a special and social dining.
Hands down this is one of the best restaurants I have visited in a while. The food is amazing and the service was wonderful. I plan to return. Thanks for the experience.
I came, I ate, I will not return. Had a reservation at 9pm and the restaurant was not really full yet the sat my party near the front door and the draft from people entering and exiting did not make for a pleasant experience. The food did not make up for the poor seating. I ordered the gumbo and it was cold. My main course was the short ribs and they were salty. My party also order a side or Brussel sprouts which were quite oily and the bacon was over cooked. We also order the lobster Mac which they should just change to Mac because the lobster was very scarce in comparison to other restaurants i have dined.
Food was excellent and our server was great. Ambience was very pleasant
Everything was amazing, and at restaurant week prices, it can't be beat! Loved our server, so attentive. Valet for only $8 was nice as well!
I was there for Restaurant Week. The choices were first rate and the service was impeccable. I was especially delighted that good bottles of wine were also part of restaurant week. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Service was spectacular. Wait staff is made up of true pros. Steak was over cooked, but flavorful. Wine list is solid.
Wow, wow, wow! We absolutely LOVE the Occidental! Our most recent meal there was to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The staff went out of their way to make it a special evening for us. With a menu where every dish looked amazing, they expertly recommended dishes for each of us as well as perfect wine and cocktail pairings. Their recommendations were spot on and our meals were masterfully prepared and absolutely delicious. We were lucky enough to be there on an evening that featured a guest pastry chef, Jason Licker. We sampled three of his creations and each one was so uniquely conceived and an adventure to indulge in.
On another note, my husband and I also provide live music for the Occidental’s patio during the warmer months. In all of our experiences with venues, we have never been treated so kindly and with as much respect as the Occidental has treated us. Nelson, a rockstar bartender, remembered our drink choices after meeting us just once. And he turns cocktail making into an art—his drinks are phenomenal and his personality and warmth are so inviting and fun to be around!
We cannot recommend the Occidental enough. They will treat you as family and you will enjoy a meal you’ll never forget!

Fantastic experience. My friends and I had a wonderful time enjoying the restaurant on an extremely quite Friday night (before a potential government shutdown). The service staff was great and quite knowledgeable and took great care of us and our dietary concerns.
Additionally the restaurant had a guest pastry chef in for the weekend named Jason Licker. His desserts were out of this world.
