Fantastic experience. My friends and I had a wonderful time enjoying the restaurant on an extremely quite Friday night (before a potential government shutdown). The service staff was great and quite knowledgeable and took great care of us and our dietary concerns.

Additionally the restaurant had a guest pastry chef in for the weekend named Jason Licker. His desserts were out of this world.

My husband and I were visiting from Pittsburgh to celebrate my birthday. Occidental was the perfect place! All of the staff signed a birthday card for me! The food was excellent!

We enjoyed our experience at the iconic restaurant. It wasn't very crowded and the hostess put us at a bar table but it had a great view of the restaurant. It was expensive but we knew that going in. We got scallops for an appetizer which were delicious but, there were only two. My husband got duck breast and I got braised short ribs. They were both very good.
The ambiance takes you back in time. It was a lovely evening.

My wife and I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere at the Occidental. Short Rib was delicious and so was the truffled macaroni and cheese. The restaurant's location (White House, Ellipse, Willard Intercontinental, and National Theatre are all within one block) and the quiet thoughtful atmosphere was terrific. I would definitely go to dinner here again.

This meal was just divine. We both had the filet which cut like “buttah” and had incredible flavor. The photos on the wall are fascinating leading me to ask the identity of several. I got answers without a bat of an eyelash. Restaurant is expensive but when you feel like you need a really special meal this is the place.

While I typically love coming to the occidental grill for dinner, New Yeara Eve was a totally different story. The restaurant was extremely cold, maybe as cold as 60 degrees. The food was as cold as the room by the time it was served. Service was excellent and wait staff exceptionally friendly. They were working hard to get everyone served and in/out as fast as possible. We were seated near front door which made for a lot of congestion and aided in the cooking of the room. If the food had been warm, my guess is it would have been same quality I expect. I will never do a pre fixe menu here. Was very disappointed in meal. For $400 for two people it was not with the value! Kudos to the Mgr who made excellent wine choice... and food price point for the wine selection.

This is a very nice restaurant however it was FREEZING when we went for lunch in the middle of the day. Almost all of the customers had their coats on. This should not happen in a high end restaurant. It put a damper on the time.

Very classy place with incredible food and service! The staff was friendly, professional and prompt and our server Lindly took excellent care of us, ensuring we made it to the theater on time. The meal was timed perfectly and the manager even gave us a tour of this historic restaurant before we left! The only negative was being seated so close to the door during this recent arctic weather blasted us with a chill each time the door was opened. We will definitely return again and again! Very highly recommended!

Food excellent. Service was lacking. This is fine dining, yet server referred to us as guys.

Food came too quickly. If given a reasonable amount of time between courses, I would have had another glass of wine.

Had a great meal on Christmas Eve. The only negative was that we were a little chilly. The front door kept opening, and it opens right into the main dining room. No curtain or anything to block the cold wind from coming in. Seems like an easy fix, though - I have seen many restaurants put up a curtain just for the winter.

Delicious meal in a nice atmosphere. I dined at Occidental on Christmas Eve with my boyfriend and both sets of parents. The little additions to the meal such as the small beef tar tar bites that came between appetizer and entree and the small bags of cookies at the end of the meal, were a nice touch. The portion sizes were fairly large. Service was good. Restaurant was not super noisy so we could all hear each other easily.

Somewhat disappointing compared to previous meals - especially the cocktails. Always good food and good service but not a fan of the new rearrangement of the dining and bar areas.

We were visiting Washington, D.C. and found this restaurant near the White House, The food was excellent, and it was quiet which we appreciated. We were also fascinated with all the photos of famous Americans that were on the walls. Very historic.

I had called the day before to increase number of diners to 7, but the table was set for 6 and, even after an extra chair was brought in, another place setting had to be requested once the 1st course came. . Wine service was very good.

We hosted a business dinner for 4 people - our experience was outstanding throughout, easy reservations, welcoming hostess and fantastic service from Lindly Haunani and her team. It's a landmark restaurant, with a cool Washington vibe and old school service.

We met out of town friends for brunch. This was the perfect location, as they were staying at the Willard Hotel. The food was very good and the service was exceptional from the moment we walked in until we left. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The Occidental has become a new favorite in town restaurant ~ well worth the trip in from suburbia.

As always Occidental did a wonderful job with first and second courses. The dessert (chocolate lava cake) was totally lacking any chocolate “lava” and was dry and perhaps stale. We would have sent it back but the server did not check back for some time. By then the red wine we hoped to pair it with was gone and it was time to head out. A disappointing end to an otherwise great evening

IF you are a political or historical junkie, you must dine here. Besides the very good food and friendly atmosphere, the restaurant has tons of pictures of historical pictures on the walls. This includes the presidents and well known politicians. It is located close to the White House.

My wife has celiac disease, which means STRICTLY gluten-free. This is not just a sensitive to wheat based products but an allergy (think peanut allergy) to any food which contains certain grains. When making the reservation, we noted that she had celiac, and when our server arrived to explain the menu, and my wife mentioned it again, he said he knew that already. She ordered an appetizer, and not knowing and to his credit, our server asked the Chef who assured us the app was gluten-free. Now having a bit of trust in the Chef, she told our waiter to ask the Chef what she should have with paired with the wine we chose. The main course was delicious, but the risotto was BARLEY risotto which will (and did) make people with celiac just as sick. She detected it after only a couple of bites, consulted her "what can I not eat" guide, and "fennels" was right there. I had been to the Occidental several times and it was always good. But for a restaurant this expensive, and especially with the precautions which were taken to assure that my wife's celiac could be accommodated, we were extremely disappointed that the Chef and his staff were so lackadaisical in understanding the serious health risks any gluten contamination can cause celiac sufferers. Especially with so many other choices in DC which we know are celiac-friendly and who are proudly so, we do not expect to be going back to the Occidental anytime soon.

Occidental is always consistent and does a great job with cocktails, main dishes and service is top notch. We had the lamb, and the scallops, and the seafood special. It was excellent! Salad was underwhelming so order other appetizers - it will be better. Always a hit at the Occidental.
