A bit overpriced for what you get!
One in my party had dietary restrictions, and we were surprised that no accommodation
( different vegetable) could be made!

We had a fabulous dinner! Wish they did better for vegans - nothing really. I had a house salad. Everyone else had many choices But overall excellent!

My wife has celiac disease, which means STRICTLY gluten-free. This is not just a sensitive to wheat based products but an allergy (think peanut allergy) to any food which contains certain grains. When making the reservation, we noted that she had celiac, and when our server arrived to explain the menu, and my wife mentioned it again, he said he knew that already. She ordered an appetizer, and not knowing and to his credit, our server asked the Chef who assured us the app was gluten-free. Now having a bit of trust in the Chef, she told our waiter to ask the Chef what she should have with paired with the wine we chose. The main course was delicious, but the risotto was BARLEY risotto which will (and did) make people with celiac just as sick. She detected it after only a couple of bites, consulted her "what can I not eat" guide, and "fennels" was right there. I had been to the Occidental several times and it was always good. But for a restaurant this expensive, and especially with the precautions which were taken to assure that my wife's celiac could be accommodated, we were extremely disappointed that the Chef and his staff were so lackadaisical in understanding the serious health risks any gluten contamination can cause celiac sufferers. Especially with so many other choices in DC which we know are celiac-friendly and who are proudly so, we do not expect to be going back to the Occidental anytime soon.

Occidental is always consistent and does a great job with cocktails, main dishes and service is top notch. We had the lamb, and the scallops, and the seafood special. It was excellent! Salad was underwhelming so order other appetizers - it will be better. Always a hit at the Occidental.

Great formal dining atmosphere. We ordered the fish special of Kite that was not very good.
I would be willing to give them another try with a different dish.

The food was excellent but the service was horrible. Incredibly long wait after we were seated, finally had to go get a waiter to ask them to come take our order....then waited even longer for dessert, no one ever came, had to go get someone again to come take our order...and after another very long wait, they brought the wrong dessert.

absurdly slow and inattentive service in an uncrowded evening. No managers in sight. No hustle. Shocked at the number of empty glasses which lingered on our table all evening. Plates took very long to clear. It was a steady slow service. Strange

Food was excellent. It was priced a bit high but not so much if the service had been average or better.

Very enjoyable outdoor evening. Very much enjoyed the music though it ended before we ate.

Our server was terrific! We all had short ribs with greens and grits which were good, but not great. Our group had Prosciutto appetizer and Caesar salad and were pleased with these choices. The oysters and mignonette were very good.

Terrific from the moment you enter. Classic bar area and the updated dining room decor provides the right blend of history with a current feel. Food was top shelf from appetizer to desert. Staff was attentive, informed and personal in their approach. Highly recommended!

Food was great. No complaints there. Service could have been better. I got an incorrect menu that took a while to get the help staff's attention to change. Table was not completely set...missing a bread plate. Once the food was served, had to serve ourselves the opened wine, luckily it wasn't put too far away. Didn't see our server until after finishing up. Expected better based on reviews.

Good but not great. Very warm inside. Did not seem like the ac was on. Service only fair. Food was fair. Normally this would suffice, but with $100 per person cost, I guess I was expecting something special. Will not be returning.

Had a wonderful experience at Occidental. I expected it to be just a another fancy steakhouse, which would have been very nice but it was so much better. The portions were a bit smaller than other steakhouses but much more creative. My husband got steak and I got duck. They were both cooked to perfection and the creative flavors came together so well that I would list it as one of my top 20 favorite meals. Service was very nice, the atmosphere was formal but comfortable, and if you haven't been there before, you'll see the walls are covered in portraits of the Presidents and other famous figures that have eaten there in the past. Pretty cool! A special thanks to the bartender who treated my husband and I to a drink as we celebrated our anniversary.

The atmosphere, while somewhat more formal, is still quite relaxed. Photos that fill the walls of presidents, and other famous people, make for a very interesting decor. The seasonal squash soup was the best that I've ever had...and I've tasted many. The scallop entree was maybe the best, if not almost the best, that I've eaten. The cast iron skillet of corn bread that was the "bread" for that night (maybe every night?) was too good to pass up. My husband and I were tourists in DC from Oregon and this was one of our top meals.

MAKE SURE YOU READ ENTIRE REVIEW.
Let me start out by saying the evening began as a disaster. The restaurant was fairly quiet for a Saturday night. We were seated at a very nice table.
Within the first thirty minutes, a group came in that were in a very festive mood. They all felt each should talk/yell at higher level than the next. This went on and the decibel levels increased to the point that we were not able to talk between us, across the table.
We asked the waiter and he and the manager asked the group to take it down a notch.
Remember that Occidental is a very nice, beautiful historic restaurant. Historic as well as recent photos and portraits of past and current presidents and other public figures.
The noise subsided only to increase and as the manager walked by, he looked at us and said he was going to try again. Not successful. Yes, he could have refused to serve them. But it was a large group, freely buying drinks and food.
The manager came by and asked if we would move for which we were grateful.
The quiet, romantic corner table was perfect. They took incredible care of us. We could not have asked for better service.
The food, a steak was very tender, everything succulent and perfect. We were offered champagne and dessert to compensate for our discomfort. We accepted.
There are some things a restaurant can not control easily. Mainly the patrons. I do believe the Occidental went above and beyond to accommodate us. I would most assuredly go back.
Note: We were seated between large portraits of George HW Bush, Barrack Obama and George the Younger. I said it was like a presidential sandwich.
Go, enjoy, they will take care of you.

Luckily we weren't in a hurry because the meal moved at a leisurely pace. We had to ask more than once for ice, lemons and sweetener. My partner's fish wasn't cooked through so they re-made it, which turned out to be a good thing because he said the second piece was much better. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Lovely outdoor setting - couldn't have asked for a better end to our tour of D.C.

After all these years, my friend and I agree, The Occidental is riding on its memory...NOT its current experience. I do have to add, however, that Soktae, our server was excellent! Great service, fun sense of humor, and we'd come back to ask for him...but the food is just "good", not great and the selections are fewer, and it is WAY overpriced.

My husband and I were in Washington DC celebrating our 1 year anniversary and this place looked like it would be great to celebrate it, however it wasn't as nice as I thought it would be.

We thought we would sit outside since the weather was so nice, but we were seated on the far side close to their neighboring restaurant/bar which was blasting dance music. We are also by a speaker for Occidental which was playing jazz music so the two sounds clashed. In hindsight, we should have sat inside.

The food was good, as were the drinks. They did give us a free dessert and a nice card to celebrate our anniversary, which was thoughtful.

Recommend: Sit INSIDE if you want a quiet dining experience.

Our server was nice but forgetful. Red fish tasted like cheap ocean perch. It smelled the minute my plate was set before me, and the presentation was unappealing. My husband's prime rib was cooked rare the way he wanted it, but the presentation was average. The lobster mac and cheese was bland. Our waiter forgot to bring our glass of wine with our entree. Maybe this old establishment should reinvent itself starting with the kitchen, food buyer and chefs. We eat with our eyes and nose -- this restaurant should remember this.

We were there for a celebration. Our waitress Hannah was great and our manager great too. He took us on a tour of all of the great pictures of celebrities and politicians throughout the restaurant.
My husband had filet and I had veal. Very tasty! Enjoy and close to the White House.

Went for Sunday Brunch for a birthday celebration. They have a nice variety of selections on the menu, from omlettes to burgers to salads. Service was attentive and courteous, but not fawning. We thought the food was excellent. Great choices and very fresh fruit/produce. And the room and historical photos and paintings is a great atmosphere.
