What was once probably a mighty institution has succumbed to resting on laurels.
My wife and I had a nice time. The staff was great and very attentive. The food was good, but we've had better at previous meals.
Everything was great. But more vegetarian options would be great
Great restaurant next to the Willard Inter-Continental Hotel in DC. Duck and Steak dishes we had were good. Fingerling Potatoes were an excellent side. Caesar Salad was not good; croutons were hard/stale.
Nice ambiance. Service was fine.
Truly exceptional food, service, and ambiance. Legendary photos all over.
Very delicious food, but the price is a little higher
Excellent crab cakes. Service was attentive. Tiramisu was tasty.
Everything was great
The dinning area was very chilly. Every time door opened, it cooled off quickly. Disabled access needs improving. Have to go through side door and in through server entrance to restaurant. Should have added ramp through main door. They need to train servers better. Our server spoke so softly you could hardly hear him, he didn't know the menu and left us unattended after food delivered. The menu is limited and the print descriptions are in such small print you can hardly read them. All easy fixes it want to make it a much better dinning experience. Sit as far from door as possible and have a sweater or scarf handy. Food quality was great, just not the best experience for the price.
The fois gras arrived cold and almost raw. At $25 not acceptable. The osso bucco was lukewarm and was not fall of the bone tender. The grilled caulinni was again cold when it arrived at our table and so burned that I sent it back, which they replaced for free.
My beef filet was very good but not warm enough.
Cocktails were well crafted.
Dessert was very good.
Dinner was $235 for two before tip.
Not good value.
Will not be going back.
Brought my mom and her husband here yesterday. They're visiting from Hawaii and we had a lovely lunch. Our server, Chris, was knowledgeable of the menu and specials. He was just attentive enough. The linguine and short rib sandwich were delicious.
My evening here was fabulous!!! The seating was great. The pod was served in a timely matter and was excellent! The food was cooked to perfection. I had the crab cakes and lobster potatoes. My friend had salmon and risotto with sweet potato trimming. She loved it! They had the best hot cornbread for a taster! Everything was great and the service was excellent! We will definitely be back.
Steak was burnt terribly. They gave us free dessert but it was a disappointment as we came to far for a special celebration.
Armando is fantastic!!! Had the bison beef and lobster mash!!
Good food. Interesting atmosphere.
My businesses lunches and dinners are always at The Occidental
I have ALWAYS loved the Occidental and was hoping it was still as great now as it had been the last times I was there over 10 years ago. And bingo, it was a great, fun, tasteful experience in an unparalleled setting.
A "must eat at" restaurant when visiting Washinton DC. The decor is beautiful and elegantly patriotic. My husband and I started our meal with the brussel sprout appetizer. We followed it with Striped Bass and the Grilled Cheshire Pork Chop. The food was delicious, and the wine refined. We will revisit this restaurant.
I came there for the brunch menu. I ordered the waffle which was tasty but very sweet especially with the maple syrup. The water tasted like tap water so I ordered iced tea. The waiter did not bring me any sugar so I needed to ask for it. I asked the Manager if there were any discounts. I know that AAA sometimes has restaurant discounts. I mentioned that I was going to the theater so she offered the pre-theater discount. I would enjoy going there again for the waffle but would want to have a different waiter. Also, there is a patio outside and many customers were eating outside.
Average food for lots of money. The lobster bisque was thin in taste. The crab cakes were lukewarm by the time they reached my table.
Very nice night. Waiter was just ok.
The service was very slow. When the food arrived most of it was cold - all of the fries ordered were cold and hard and we had to request hot truffle fries. The dessert had a strange aftertaste and we had to send it back.
Large well spaced tables - efficient services without being particularly friendly. All good excellent
The venue and meal were fabulous as expected. We had a lot of trouble getting the attention of our waiter from start to finish. Surprising, since it seemed a relatively slow night. Perhaps not staffed to cover the outside + inside?
We had dinner before seeing a show at the National Theatre. We loved the pre-fixed menu and speciality cocktail. Food was delicious and our server saved our dessert for us after the show was over. Great experience!
The host was very friendly and helpful. The waiter was more interested in talking with co-workers, than he was in serving. The crab cake I started with was only luke warm when it was delivered. The I had to wait forever for my sandwich. I must have looked annoyed when the waiter passed my table, because he announced my sandwich was ready. But then it took a while for him to bring it to the table. Also, trying to get a coffee refill took forever. Would not go back to the Occidental.
We have been to the Occidental many times and this was a good experience with two exceptions. One, they seemed to rush us through dinner - entrees arriving too quickly to finish the salad. Two the lighting level was extraordinarily high which ruins the ambiance. I felt like I was dining at a gas station. I will return, but ask the server not to rush us (and dim the lights) as soon as we are seated.
We ha an absolutely good dinner in all respects. The food was fabulous.
Great ambiance at restaurant and bar for a 21st Birthday celebration.
We use to eat there many years ago. Took friends to reminisce. Sadly my meal was not up to par. The 16$ Caesar salad was dried up Romain and no croutons. 3 of the table ordered steak and thought it was great. The two of us who ordered fish found it over cooked. The lobster mashed potatoes were excellent. After spending 800.00$ for food and drinks, I was quite disappointed. Will not be going back as DC has much better restaurants than this.
Everything was absolutely perfect, and the lobster mashed potatoes were fabulous! Thank you Freddy for a perfect evening!
Great food great service great location
The outdoor ambiance is nice but the food wasn’t impressive to be honest. It looked presentable but had no taste. We wouldn’t come back here.
My reservations were for 6:30pm. My guest arrived a bit early and were seated with drinks. I arrived at 6:30 and sat down. 20 minutes had gone by and the server had not returned to the table to even offer me water. Asked the hostess where our server was and was told they will be right out. Another 10 minutes and nothing. My group and I went across the courtyard to Cafe du Parc for dinner and had wonderful service!
We arrived at 5:00pm on a Friday to find little crowd, but it built around us as we dined. That said, we were never rushed. We started with soup and salad, enjoyed superb seafood. And we even lingered over dessert, as I had oped for an early-bird prix fixe three-course meal that included wine. Our waiter was patient and helpful. We highly recommend The Occidental for their superb service, fine dining, and bright and colorful atmosphere.
Food was okay. Service was subpar. We ordered at 2012 Graves and got a 2014 Graves. The manager didn’t seem to care. The waiter tried to make up the giving us free desert, which normally would have been fine but not for wine snobs! We most likely won’t be going back as it didn’t make an impression on us. It’s all your Congress.
Terrible food and super expensive.
This was a great dining experience. Food, service, ambiance all excellent. The only reason I knocked off a star is, we requested an outdoor table and was told there was a 20-minute wait. We told the hostess we'd be at the bar, she said we would get a text. 45 mins later, no text, I went to the hostess station. The staff was VERY apologetic and took us to a nice table outside. The rest of the experience was really excellent.
