I had the chopped salad with Steak, it was delicious. The steak was done perfectly. We also had fun cocktails, and the server was versed in each and was able to fully explain the choices. She was awesome!
Easter Brunch on the patio was an exceptional experience! Great food, service and setting!
Easter brunch was nice but probably should have ordered a different entree. The crab cake starter was delicious, the steak and eggs were ok but the bread accompanying the meal was outstanding. We would go back.
Slow service and we had at least 30-45 minutes between courses
Excellent special place for Easter brunch. Great food, great portion sizes
Tourist trap. So different than it used to be
This is my first visit to this restaurant. I am from Florida and had checked out the reviews at the restaurant on OpenTable and decided to go to try. I ordered the filet mignon and the beet salad and my mother had the special which was a New York strip as well as the she crab soup for an appetizer. For dessert I had the triple layer chocolate. Everything we ate was amazing. Flavorful and tender.Besides the spectacular food we had amazing service. We never had to ask for anything to be refilled. We also had the best server, Charmaine. If you go here ask for Charmaine. She is amazing and very personable. I would definitely go back and would recommend it highly.
Great outdoor seating!
Great service, wonderful room, great drinks. Food was good.
Best Caesar salad I have ever had and the filet was phenomenal.
Sabrina P, thank you for such a wonderful review. Nothing pleases us more than to hear that our guests thoroughly enjoyed their dining experience. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Really neat restaurant with a view of the Washington Monument. The food menu is rather limited, but they have a vast selection of wines. I ordered the surf & turf (filet and crab cake). Both were good, but not $70 good. I did love the corn bread you get beforehand, and the Caesar salad was also really good. My main complaint was how long it took to get our food and the check. Overall, I will remember this restaurant for the ambiance and wine, but probably not for the food.
I will return. What a lovely spot and great food to boot.
Thanks for the awesome review, RobertF! We work hard to make sure every guest thoroughly enjoys their experience and are happy to hear we hit the mark. Come back and see us soon. Cheers!
Very good service and food, but disappointed that the dinner menu has shrunk to a small number of entrees. No pasta dishes and only one beef dish!
Food was excellent--enjoyed the cornbread and cauliflower soup--Kyra provided us with excellent service!!!
CharlesL, thank you for such a complimentary review. We are thankful that you found our food and service to be five-star worthy. Kyra will be so touched by your kind words. We are looking forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
It's definitely a place to visit at least once. The atmosphere and the ambiance alone are worth the visit. The food was good but not great. Yet, in the total, I'm glad we went there.
Thank you for taking the time to share feedback on your recent experience at The Occidental. We're happy to learn your visit was an enjoyable one and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Our party of five was completely satisfied - the food and service were both excellent. only complaint was about the prosecco - everything else was a success.
Thank you for dining with us and for your great review. We understand that you have many choices here in Washington, and are thrilled you chose to dine with us.
Food was outstanding. Service was incredibly slow. We had to recruit others to get our server to take our order. Setting is lovely — you can sit outside in warm weather, and good was very good. Service was an odd departure from the rest of the experience.
Food was good but way over priced. Also, out of the wine I ordered. Really nice atmosphere but most likely will not return.
The food and service were pretty good, but it's hard to feel good dining at a place where the soap dispensers in the men's bathroom are empty. This is made worse when the sign indicates this is where employees also go. If this isn't a health code violation, I'm not sure what is. This is ALWAYS unacceptable at a restaurant. This is the primary reason I stopped going to Chipotle.
The menu and outside patio on a sunny Spring day were appealing. The food had local touches, high quality ingredients, tasty flavors and generous portions. The venue and service were cheerful on a busy Cherry Blossom weekend. All in all, a pleasant surprise.
Very accommodating staff; the food was good - we liked the soft shell crab appetizer. The steaks are also excellent and cooked perfectly. Wine selection is bit limited but was well priced.
It was a good place to learn a few tidbits of Washington history.
We arrived and sat down, the table beside us was so loud, another group of people walked over to them and even mentioned something to them. Our server disappeared, and we waited over 10 minutes for a cocktail, 30 minutes for our appetizers. One appetizer was the lamb, that came out burnt, almost blackened. Plus,I asked for the house Merlot, and the server gave me the most expensive on the menu for a single glass (I had two, not knowing $36.00). We have been coming for years as a tradition. We are now shopping for a new restaurant for our tradition.
haven't been here in ten years.
welcome and handling of reservation were first class.
waiter's attitude seemed 'indifferent' at best
first hurried us then disappeared.
forgot some of the order items...but we weren't charged for them either.
ok evening. great guest, so food was less important. luckily.
They were out of Pellegrino Water, Basil Hayden Bourbon......very limited menu. Place felt like it was under financial stress.
We stay at The Willard often. I would highly advise that no one go to the Occidental. She was once a great place. So much history. The place has lost its soul.
I had the 8 ounce filet. It was cooked to perfection, tender, but lacking in taste. My wife had halibut that was quite good. Our server was mediocre. Overall, this restaurant is very expensive relative to quality and service.
The perfect atmosphere for a date, business meeting, birthdays and more. The food and classy drinks are Delicious. The restaurant delivers a professional service with delicious and creative food combinations.
Food was really good. Service seemed a tad slow for the volume of people in the restaurant but still good. Was a later reservation so staff was dwindling. Server was hustling and the food came out in a good timeframe, but getting to order & refills was a touch slow for the price. Really good overall, & would recommend!
Wine list was unremarkable for the price point of the meals. Food was good but not a good value.
They had run out of numerous types of wine that we tried ordering, we had no bread that is supposed to go with meats appetizer we tried ordering so what will the meat and cheese be placed on? So we decided to leave and head to another restaurant.
38.00 pork chop that was 50% fat
4 scallops tasted great at $8.00 a scallop
Service poor, had to get hostess to give us our bill as our waitress disappeared. Best part was bar and bartender.
The food was average and not worth the expensive prices. Our entrees took around 45 minutes to come out and was not worth the wait. I will not be coming here again.
Excellent food was amazing
Can’r Wait to come back
The receptionist did not have her act together, but our server was excellent. Overall, we thought the food was good. A significant part of what you are paying for is the history that comes with the Occidental. Yes, there are better restaurants in DC, but this one comes with some unique history.
Nice evening. Table was near door and windy. Food was very good.
Solid quality food with a few nice touches. Nothing particularly memorable. Fried green tomatoes on the BLT was a nice touch. Everything nice and safe - just didn’t stand out in any particular way.
Decor is interesting and may be worth the visit. One of those places you don’t regret visiting, but probably don’t go back to unless you work right there.
Biggest downside was the service. Can only be described as slow.
PJ was an excellent server. Our overall experience was marvelous!
The steak was fantastic...atmosphere is very DC. Service wasn’t the best, but far from the worst.
Great venue for business. Quiet with professional service.
We had to a very long wait to get our food and we were there at 11:30
Dinner was excellent. Service was excellent. Ambience is pure DC and sophisticated. I loved it.
