In the south of France, a cabanon represents an original kitchen, where all the mothers and grandmothers would cook regional specialties for the entire family & anybody lucky enough to be around at the right place at the right time. We want to bring you that full experience (minus the grandmother).View Private Dining Details
Read the reviews and gave it a shot on a 1st date. The place was perfect . Great ambiance..The server was around but not hovering, our food, 2 steaks both cooked differently, came out together and exactly as requested. All around a very nice meal.
Meal was spoiled by alternating odors of sewage and Lysol.
Met a group of friends for dinner. Great choice of venue (our first time), as you could actually HEAR each other speak. We’ll be back for this reason alone.
Very good and creative food overall (husband’s chicken was a little dry), and excellent service from very friendly server.
We’ll see you again soon.
Delight your palette & share precious time with loved ones in welcoming space!
I chose OCabanon for its proximity to my hotel & as a central meeting spot for a mini-family reunion. Its 29th Street location is close to Penn Station & the neighborhood is a mixed bag, with high rent apartments nearby & street people sprawled on the sidewalk. But don't be dissuaded! Once inside, you enter via a long rectangular bar ---a good place to await your full party, while eating oysters. Walking past the bar & to the left, a medium sized, high ceilinged dining room, lined with wine + art, greets you. As I had requested a "cozy table, in the corner," we were seated along the far left wall , which gave our nine person party a nice space for conversation. And there was lots of that---almost four hours worth of La Familigia & fine food!
Our server was gracious and so helpful, especially with my wine selection, offering tastes until I found the one. The food? Amazing. My cousin & I opted to share the octopus starter. As a West Coast woman, I expected small tender octopus. What we got was an eye popper: A large tendril (maybe 9" long) blackened a bit, yet so tender and flavorful. For my main, I had the duck---a thick section of breast, cooked perfectly, topped with fois gras & accompanied with luscious potatoes & sauteed vegetables. Three chose the risotto which all three raved about. I sampled & was delicious. Salmon was another pick, as was roast chicken and mussels. All enjoyed their meals. Dessert? House made profiteroles (think mini circular eclairs) with vanilla icecream, a pear something & cream brulee all to share, with my espresso, was the perfect ending.
Try OCabanon. Their food will delight your palette.
As always an exceptional dining pleasure. Justin is amazing and staff always knowledgeable. Great food.
O'Cabanon has become our go to spot for a nice meal. Everyone is always very friendly and attentive. The food is amazing as is the wine and cocktails. We always try to take our out of town guests here too. They are great about getting into the holiday spirit, whatever holiday it may be which is always fun. Great Job!! We will be back.
So we caught an afternoon matinee on Broadway and headed to Chelsea to find OCabanon...good fortune followed as we found a parking spot directly in front of the place..we were early (5ish) and only a few tables occupied. Took a seat in the rear dining room and enjoyed a leisurely dinner..food was nicely prepared and very enjoyable..our meal included a bottle of wine and the pin noir was excellent. If your driving down 29th you might missed the place..but be alert, its worth it.
Food was good tasting and the prices were reasonable (for NYC). The staff easily accommodated our ever growing group...food service however was a bit harder to come by. All-in-all a nice experience.
Went here prior to an event at MSG with a party of three. 2 of us got the cassoulet and 1 the Filet Mignon. The duck in the cassoulet was dry and the broth had lots of small pieces of cartilage in it which made it difficult to eat. We did not like it at all, which was surprising since other reviews have touted it and it is supposed to be their specialty. The Filet Mignon was good. Restaurant was very noisy and it was hard to have a conversation. Service was slow and it felt like they were under staffed. Convenience to MSG was the best part of the experience.
Delightful place. The food was simply terrific. Very authentic French food. We were lucky enough to be there for cassoulet night. That dish is highly recommended, as is the roast chicken.
Only complaints: the table was a little small, and about half the wine list was out of stock.
Get the Tapas of the Month! If you are with friends and want to share nibbles, this is a great value with quality products and it is served in style. You will not be disappointed. Also, great choices and value all over the wine list. Lastly, try a glass of Aval, a special cider imported from Brittany, France. OCabanon is one of the few places in Manhattan to serve it.
Loved the restaurant. The food was very creative and tasteful however both entrees were not warm enough. The staff was friendly and attentive.
It was ok. We have been here before and both times thought the food was just ok
Needed a place for a lunch meeting. This area does not have many options so I was happy to find this restaurant. The food was good, I enjoyed my salad and it was a generous portion without being too large. The wine list is fun and I had a nice glass of white with my lunch. The service was welcoming and even though the place was empty when we first got there at 12:30, it had a good amount of guests by the time we were leaving.
Excellent French bistro food and atmosphere near Penn Station. A real find for that neighborhood
Everything exceptional. Recommend the stew and the burger so far. Everything looks so good. Will return to try more
The prices were extremely high for the kind of restaurant it was - appetizers and wine prices were silly for a neighborhood restaurant
Had a very nice family diner there. Service was great, the food and the wines are just excellent.
Really fresh food and beautifully presented. Good wine and beer selections. Price is right. Close to Highline.
waiters were ready so we kept ordering. the food is fun and filling. it really bothered us enough that we won't be back that for a French place they had stingy pours. if the customer is eating what's the point in trying to hold onto the wine??
Food was good and we enjoyed the bonus of testing out our rusty high school French on the friendly wait staff. A memorable night with good food good French wine. The ambience was funky and unusual but pleasant.
Food was good and service was attentive. However, we had 2 dishes with mashed potato's and we had to return them twice before we got warm mashed potato's. We also had order a dish which was out and had to pick a new one. The bill included the dish that was out , so they tried to charge us one extra dish. Not impressed by how this was handled.
Stopped in for dinner before going to a concert at the Garden - which is just a short walk away. We arrived early and ordered drinks while looking at the menu. Our waiter took our food order and we waited for our drinks. This is my complaint - our appetizers arrived and we were still waiting for our drinks! Our waiter apologized and went to the bar to move them along. That being said our meals were terrific and our servers paid special attention the rest of the evening. I would recommend -but would pay more attention to keep the servers on point.
Small intimate space, good selection of wines, food was very good.
Place is great food, service excellent. They just crowd too many tables so close to each other. Not much privacy.
First time here and we will return. Service and food was excellent and authentic. We got caught in traffic and when I called we were told not to worry. And they held our reservation. Right around the corner from
MSG so a good choice.
Fabulous food. Very friendly!
But there was a major construction going on
W/plastic taped up! But we didn’t eat anywhere near that area. I will def go vavl
Had an excellent experience. We were 7 people, seated on time as per our reservation. Service was knowledgeable, helpful, and available. Food, which it is what we were there for, was excellent. All agreed.
The food was not up to my par. I had escargot . The sauce that the snails were in was flat with very little taste. It seemed to be a butter sauce instead of a garlic and parsley sauce.
The service was slow between courses
Service was great, wine amazing, good spectacular! Try the Stew, absolutely the best!
Horrible experience. Service is ridiculous. It took forever to bring appetizer and another 30 min to bring food. They forget one plate and brought it when everyone was finished. Wine was served warm and wine glasses are cheapest you can get. Overall was more than a disaster. Please avoid this one.
It took us 1 1/2 hours to get our first course while we watched our there around us eat and then leave. They didn't offer any remedy to the situation, but apologized several times as we waited. I would not eat here again.
Booked this restaurant, in part, for its proximity to MSG, as we had tickets for an event. We got seated quickly enough, 2 hours prior to start of event. Drinks and appetizers came out within a reasonable time, though a request for French Martinis yielded drinks consisting of straight vodka. After having to explain the ingredients in a French Martini (in a French restaurant!), the correct drinks came out. The wine selection was good, as were the appetizers. One member of our party claimed that she had the best French Onion Soup ever. Thus ends the good part of the story.
With about an hour into the meal, post appetizers and just prior to the second bottle of wine, we thought we were sitting pretty with plenty of time to get to the show. WRONG! Fifteen minutes - no main course. Thirty minutes - no main course. Forty five minutes - still no main course and no explanation. At that point, we decided that we had to leave in order to get through the new security measures at MSG - complete with metal detectors, bag inspections and lines that bottle neck into the street. We were presented with a check that included the main course items. This was quickly corrected, but with two bottles of wine, two cocktails and appetizers, the bill still amounted to $200, and no main course. We found ourselves eating pretzels at the the concert venue. We certainly hadn't bargained for this. What's worse, when one of our party addressed the matter with the owner, he seemed grossly unconcerned, despite his claim that he would make things right if we called him. Really? Should this EVER happen in the first place? It's a shame because the food we did have was good. In addition, the restaurant got very crowded on a Saturday evening, so they don't seem to have too many concerns about business, but if enough diners have this type of experience, I suspect that concerns will (and should) increase. Beware of booking if you have time constraints!
Visited before a concert, wanted to eat light and have a few drinks. Got there early and played it safe. Shared the mussels and ceviche to start and the shared the Filet as the main course. Food was excellent and the service was very attentive. Towards the end, when the crowd started shuffling in, we waited longer for drinks and service and was hard to call for check. Still highly recommend - great food - but make sure you have some time to spend!
Fun, good food and excellent service. Not too expensive for French food.
Immediately was impressed once we walked in- what a great atmosphere! The staff was a little slow but there was a large party upstairs and fairly busy downstairs as well, so it was understandable. Food came out quickly, and in much larger portions than I was expecting (but no lack of quality!). I would definitely come back and recommend.
Great spot near Penn Station, walking distance. Accommodated is when we didn’t plan well for time. Very pleasant authentic French.
Nice place with good food and good service. With the time conversations become louder and louder so the noise level is rising. But its definitely place to go if you wanna meet a friend close to the Penn Station.
We LOVE Ocabenon. It is a gem so close to Penn Station! We have been in a number of times and have always been glad we went! We took a foodie friend who LOVED the place too.
