The door was always open. Since we had the chance to witness it in our childhood, we wanted to recreate this environment with the same welcoming spirit. So we decided to name our place "OCabanon".
“Cave à Manger”, literally means “Cellar to Eat”. In fact, the idea is to bring a nice pairing between wine and food in a cosy place.
We want our “Cave à Manger” to be a friendly destination, where anybody can discover love stories between wine and food, share and gossip around a good bottle.

In the south of France, a cabanon represents an original kitchen, where all the mothers and grandmothers would cook regional specialties for the entire family & anybody lucky enough to be around at the right place at the right time. Great varieties of wine. Our waiter had wonderful suggestions after hearing our preference trends having us taste two before deciding which bottle, even changing glasses in between tastings. Risotto was soooo good as was the tomato tart tatin.
We ate there a few months back and had a great meal, we loved it, its very cute looking and we had a good experience. Went back this past Saturday and had totally different experience - my friend had the grilled octopus it was so hard and chewy she could not even eat it. I had the escargots which were good, I had the whole grilled fish which was not as good as the last time I was there, it was somewhat dry, and she had a burger which was ok. The worst was the service, our waiter never came back to ask if all was ok, he was nowhere to be found and at the end of the meal we ordered coffee, after waiting fifteen minutes we asked the manager to cancel it, we told him what happened, and he could care less, did not even say he was sorry, he was completely indifferent, was terrible experience, I would never go there again and would not recommend it at all.
Great place for parties of six or more to share multiple tapas offerings. Loved the baked Brie and fruit platter. We also shared a platter of mussels and a plate of balsamic roasted tomatoes. The flavors were not unique but the sharing sparked endless conversation. Great night.
Surprising gem in a difficult area to find good restaurants!
We took a shot with this place and made a dinner reservation before the Billy Joel concert. What a fabulous place. Great food, wine and service. I would absolutely recommend this place and will return if I'm back at MSG again.
Great restaurant within a 5 minute walk to Madison Square Garden. We enjoyed all the wonderful french dishes. Steak tartar, traditional escargot (my favorite), french onion soup (the way my french grandmother made it), moules frites, salade nicoise and a great wine selection. We had a wonderful waitress who was warm and friendly. She did a great job especially since it was her first night. We will certainly be back especially when we have an event at the Garden.
The upstairs room was like eating in a subway station.
The wine by the glass was very expensive for very little.
The food looked OK but tasted mediocre or less.
The service was done by very bad actors, acting like waiters.
The cost was too, too high,
Although I still don’t know the meaning of the name, OCabanon, I certainly enjoyed the casual atmosphere and elegant food. My friend and I shared an excellent tarte tatin with roasted tomato appetizer and couscous with veggies and lamb shank. Portions are very generous. Wines are generally expensive. Like most restaurants in NYC, it is too noisy for my tastes, but I would return for the food and excellent service.
They did . great job promoting Halloween so I'd hoped for more activity than wait staff in costume and a silent TV playing movies. Maybe because we left at 9 and music wasn't starting 'til 10. A bit late for a work night if you over 30!
A unique environment in NYC and in Chelsea. Good food.
We needed some place convenient to both the PATH and Penn Station for the LIRR. Found this by google searching area restaurants and based on Open Table reviews it sounded pretty good and met our biggest priority which was location. It exceeded our expectations - the food was great, the decor eclectic and fun and the staff attentive with good recommendations . We would definitely return as a perfect meet in the middle place. Only thing is the waiter could have been a little better informed on the food ingredients (although he did go ask) on the special but his dessert recommendation was spot on.
Delicious food, large portions, nice atmosphere, and an interesting boutique along side.
Great choice for dinner for a group of 8 near the FUT Museum. There was something for everyone’s appetite whether just a bowl of delicious onion soup, an assortment of tapas, or a full meal of comfort food roast chicken or a very large, juicy burger and fries. No doubt we’ll be headed back here soon for another French-inspired meal. We loved the large table in the back room surrounded by wine racks and the great Halloween decor.
This was our first visit. We split the octopus and Fois Gras for appetizers. The octopus was tough and chewy. The Fois Gras was disappointing. Our entrees included gritty, dried out mussels, a dried out half of chicken and underwhelming risotto. Service was pleasant but seemed unconcerned that the meal was unacceptable. We will not be back.
The food was great and the atmosphere was really nice, it was cool and different, and reminded me of places when I was in Paris. If your looking for something a little different, then this is the place, quaint yet lively and fun. It was a little pricey though so check the menu prices before you go to see if you feel its in your budget, that is really my only negative, not hugely expensive for Manhattan but was pricey we felt. The escargot were excellent and they had a whole branzino fish as special which was amazing. My friends had the octopus appetizer and they loved it.
Food was fantastic! Tried multiple appetizers; both apps & entrees delicious. Dessert looked fantastic but we were too full to try.
Service was very slow. Waited at least 5 minutes before anyone even approached table. Had to ask for water, lemon, etc. several times. Server was very nice but slow.
One msg concert
Straight to table efficient service with s smile but not hurried
Mussels very good
3rd time I’ve been to this restaurant before a MSG event and it never disappoints. Food is terrific and service was perfect. We were seated in the additional new space rather than in the packed rear area and our waiter was super attentive. Prices are very fair for the quality and portion size of the food. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Conveniently close to Madison Square Garden for a pre-concert dinner. Great Halloween decorations. Service was a little slow as some reviewers mentioned so we made an early reservation. By 7:00 it was very bustling and noisy. We had really nice cheesy onion soups as a starter and shared a filet mignon and mussels for entrees. The mussels were really outstanding and the filet was pretty standard but accompanied by delicious vegetables and potatoes au gratin. Cappuccino was lukewarm. Overall a good pre MSG choice.
Good location near MSG and fancier food, some meals were better than others
Disappointing food, ordered the steak tartare - it was not fresh, way too much pickle in it and not seasoned correctly. They should choose simpler menu choices as they aren't up to the task of more challenging items.
Food quality and presentation five star. Waitstaff attentive
Decent French bistro in a convenient location. Kind of an industrial scene, and probably a former fur business on 29th st, but comfortable and with a decent menu. Enjoyed the half chicken, and the pasta, but the pate was dry and not as good as I can get in my local market. Good wine list and decent prices, as well as good service. Might go back to try some other dishes.
Great place for authentic French cuisine. Service was excellent. 1/2 off bottles of wine on Sunday was a plus. Delicious food!
A very good French restaurant with an attentive service.
Nice atmosphere and attentive service made this get together enjoyable. French onion soup was delicious as well as the beet salad.
Excellent food and service.
The food was mediocre - I had chicken which was ok but the accompaniments were not great. Service very cheerful but had to ask four times for a drink. It is a decent place close to Penn Station, which is the why I was there. If you don’t need to catch a train, choose someplace else.
The Wine glass small and wine above the half way
We were looking for something close to the Fashion Institute Museum, and this was the only one that looked promising. We loved it. Mostly we liked the ambience and the French cooking. Nice wines, too. A little pricey, but well worth it.
Great food, Service and wine!
This a terrific restaurant with a great boutique stocked with food and items from France. Don't be put off by the block which always seems to be under construction.
I had the salmon burger which was so-so, tasted fishy. My guest had the salad nicoise which looked delicious.
Prices are fair. Wine list is terrific.
Incredible food great service. Very quite easy to talk. The Salmon was amazing!
Friendly, professional staff, nice room with eclectic decor and layout, great drinks and delicious food with generous portions.
This kind-of-hidden bistro is very close to Madison Square Garden. Excellent provincial French. We had escargot and mussels and they were amazing! Very generous portions for a French place. Will definitely return!
Emphasis was on the food, as I prefer. Authentic French without heavy sauces, if you wish. Excellent proximity to Penn Station.
This restaurant was a find. The neighborhood has mostly bars, and we needed a nice place to have lunch, and Ocabanon was perfect. The food was very good and the service excellent. It was a surprising find.
Love the Octopus Salad and the Burger! So damm good
It was a really delicious!
We visited OC restaurant just before concert in MSG. And we like it.
I'm very grateful for everything, they were are very kind
