This was our first visit to OBS. It was Saturday night and our anniversary. We arrived at 7:30 and were seated. We had our choice of some seats, although about half were reserved for 2 or 3 large groups. Most are tall tables and chairs. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. After a couple of excellent drinks, we ordered the mussels as a starter. They were gritty and the sauce was watery with lots of chopped bell peppers. After that, we ordered the main course. My wife ordered the 8 oz filet. We were informed that they were out of the filet due to a very busy Friday night. Instead she ordered the 10 oz rib eye. I asked what the fish of the day was and was informed that there was no fish of the day, although they did have some fired rockfish bites. So I ended up ordering the salmon. Both arrived promptly. The steak looked large, but much of it was fat, which my wife went to work trimming away.In summary, we enjoyed our meal and might go back. I would classify OBS as more of a bar that also has a nice restaurant than a restaurant that has a nice bar. We never saw a manager or anyone who seemed to be in charge.
We arrived while there was a painting party which they catered to, our food was cold when delivered and had to send back, the replacements were great.
Had to send 3 different dishes back for being undercooked or cold
You don’t really need a reservation at this place. Great food. Service is just ok. It’s more of a bar than a restaurant. Our first time here they had a huge, loud party in the space and it was unpleasant. This last Saturday we were the only ones there at 6 pm. The only place you can get chargrilled oysters around here.
Our waitress was the best ever! Delicious food and a great scene!
My 14 year old son took me here for a Valentine's Day "date". I was pleasantly surprised at the prices and daily specials (a HUGE plate-sized prime rib cooked perfectly and two sides for $12.99 every Wednesday!). The she crab soup was the best I have ever tried in Virginia Beach and the ambiance was easy and fun (my son enjoyed watching a basketball game during our date haha. My favorite part about this entire restaurant was the service: the greeter was nice and professional, the bartender was knowledgeable and made the best Moscow Mule EVER, and our server, "Nico" was adorable and so positive and pleasant. We will DEFINITELY come back here...50 cent oysters on Thursdays!!
OBS is outstanding!! Highly recommend you try it. Great food, great service , we will definitely be back. Favorite new place to eat.
Singer started at 7pm, little to loud, hard to have a conversation, maybe start later.
This was our first time at OBS and we really enjoyed the experience
The four of us had the early bird special and everything was good except there was no vegetable so that was just kind of odd cuz once you add on a salad or a side then of course you don't get the same value. Add a tossed salad or some steamed broccoli to your early bird special and it will be absolutely special food was great.
Thank you. We really had a nice time. The dinner was excellent and we enjoy the New Years Celebration.
The restaurant was super loud and the food was terrible — if you’re going to serve poor quality dive bar food, then reflect that in your prices.
service was great. good variety of menu items, food was excellent. Look forward to the next meal. Have a great day.
We actually went to see a specific band. It was a great night. Thank you to open table for making it easy to get a reservation!
Bartender was terrible. Slow slow service no lime or straw in the drinks all night. He was also unfriendly. Wait staff worked hard to try and make up for it. Loved the ambiance and the food was great. I’ll go back.
The service was excellent. We liked the food as well.
The live music was too loud for us,but overall this was an authentic US experience.
Came here on someone's recommendation for dinner. We were happy to see the Redskin's game being televised so we could glance over to it once in awhile. Ordered filet mignon with sides of asparagus and baked zuchini which was one of the best preparations of everything ever! My friend had a ribeye steak, potato and salad. We both agreed our meats were melting in our mouths and the sides were generous and tasty. We will go back here many times more!
The food was great as were the drinks, but the ambiance was definitely lacking and the table for 4 people was way too small first time I ever felt crowded at a table, I was putting stuff on the floor. It reminded more of a sports bar, not what I was expecting......so if you know that in advance you would probably have a good time.
This was our first visit and it was much more of a dive bar than we expected. We almost left, but ordered the She crab soup to test the waters and it was fantastic!! There was a huge party there and they were obnoxiously loud. Our food was really good, but it was not the relaxing night out we had hoped for. The bartender told us it was unusual.
Our experience was nothing like that of the local paper food critic. This place is simply a beach bar with ordinary food. Nothing about it was a fine dining or destination restaurant experience.
Our group of 12 on a Saturday night had a great time. Everyone raved about the food and drinks. Live music was also good. With a group of 12 it did take a while to get the food, but that is to be expected with such a large group. The waitress was attentive. We'll definitely be back to visit.
My husband and I went to OBS after I read an article in the paper. We love to try new, non-chain restaurants and this place was really great. Pat and Heather at the bar were super friendly and helpful. We ordered oysters as our starters and they had 3 different mignonettes. All three were delicious. I did however have a bad oyster, it sort of happens from time to time. We mentioned it to Pat who quickly gave us a couple more. We ordered steak, mac and cheese and creamed spinach. Our steak was seasoned just right and cooked perfectly, rare. It was so tender I was using a butter knife. The sides were great as well. That night, Cody Stageberg was playing and he was very talented and we really enjoyed his music. The bill came to us and to our surprise, they had comped half the oysters (because the bad one was one of 6 we had ordered). We really did not expect this and we are very grateful. We will definitely be back and bring the rest of our family as well.
First time.........only had appetizer, friend had chicken marsala and asked to switch out potatoes for pasta. $2 charge. When entree came, it was served with macaroni !!!!
Brand new waiter....very pleasant, tho' shy, he tried hard.
Went for the prime rib special and was not disappointed. Great value at $12.99. Went to another well known restaurant the week before and this prime rib was every bit as good as the $34 one I had earlier.
Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Oysters, steaks, shrimp and all the side dishes were perfectly cooked and seasoned. We also polished off two desserts! Good selection of wine and beer too. I probably could eat my entire meal just from the menu of side dishes!
Terribly slow service, especially the kitchen. Food came out wrong; appetizer came out at the same time as the entree.
Steaks were not as good as our first time. It would be nice if they had fewer high tops and more regular tables
Good enough barely . Menu was in transition, many items were unavailable. Oysters were terrific. Several of our steaks were overcooked. Nice enough staff. Decor is that of a dive bar rather than a place selling $25 ala cart entrees. Surprised and disappointed.
Our first time at OBS was disappointing. I'll start with this disclaimer: We were a party of 8. When we arrived there were approximately 4 other patrons in OBS, two at the bar, and 2 at a table. There appeared to be at least 2 servers and one bartender (whom we later learned was the manager. Our server was initially pleasant enough, but very slow. Our food came out at an extremely slow pace; however we were somewhat prepared for that, we often dine as a large group and are accustomed to the kitchen staff not being prepared to roll out large orders in a timely fashion. The issue was that when out orders were not prepared correctly, our server spoke to us in a condescending manner. The manager, here, was the saving grace. After speaking with him, he ensured that everyone's order was correct, and was kind enough to cover the cost of the two meals that had to be remade and throw in some desserts for the table. Most importantly, he was compassionate, and understanding, and made it a point to ensure that the attitude we received from the server was not acceptable. I may be willing to give OBS another try based on the manager's response.
This was our second visit and the food was consistently awesome. We took out of town visitors, and they enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The entertainment was especially good that night--an acoustic duo. Thank goodness the food was good, as it took quite a long time to come out. We waited over an hour for the appetizers. Overall a great experience and we'll go back!
Where was everyone. We arrived at 5:30 PM on a Saturday afternoon and were the only patrons in the place. It stayed that way for most of our meal - a very eerie feeling. Food was very tasty, even if steaks a tad under-done (order one level of done-ness degree up from your usual), but oysters rocked. Scallops (appetizer) were relatively small and overpriced.
Very expensive for the amount of food that you get! I had to go straight home and get something to eat.
Service was slow and contributed to the food not being hot when delivered to our table. Also lax on drink service. Melted butter took 20 minutes ....this is a seafood restaurant so we did not expect 20 minutes to get warm not hot butter. By that time our food had been eaten. The restaurant is decorated nicely and staff is friendly.
My family had a great meal. There was a little mix up with one order but it was fixed quickly and the staff was very accommodating. There was live music that was fun and entertaining. We will definitely be going back, especially to try the new menu our server mentioned that should be coming out soon.
Great oyster special on Thursdays. We have been here several times and will return. My husband loved the oysters Rockefeller. And at $1 a piece, you can't beat it.
Nice atmosphere with good cocktails and food. The menu is a bit pricey considering that everything else about the place is casual. Could decrease their prices a few bucks and it would be great!
Our waitress was very personable and helpful with our choices. She was very attentive and the food was good. My filet was done perfect and the Potato Frites were a joy. Outstanding were the char grilled oysters, I mentioned having them in New Orleans and turned out the chef used to work whee we went in New Orleans! What a kick!
My husband and I went for Valentine's Day, it was our first time dining here. Our waiter was very good and the food was good as well. Only disappointment on the food was the she crab soup, needs some improvement. The ambiance is a bit confusing, it almost feels like a sports bar, having high top tables throughout and flat screen TVs with sports on, but the menu is aims at higher end food. Overall experience was good, but if you're looking for some romance, it may not be the best place.
Went on Valentine's Day decided to try something new. This place is in an old shopping center on Shore Drive so it isn't much to look at and inside is not special either. We had a reservation and were seated at a table by the restroom even though there were only 3 other tables taken. The chemical smell was terrible.
My husband had the peach old fashioned I had the OBS margarita; both were good not spectacular and not very strong. The she crab soup was luke warm and salty. We did not order an oyster appetizer- Rockefeller and grilled are the choices or $3/oyster off the bar.
Hubby got the NY Strip, it was good. I got the Rockfish special- also good but not anything spectacular. The broccolini was perfect, potatoes purée were ok. We also orders the truffle mac and cheese which was good but not very hot. No dessert.
For the price you would think more it was a more upscale atmosphere. Not so. While it was good, there was nothing to make it stand out so we will not be returning.
Our first visit left us wanting to return soon. However, the second visit was not good. We were basically the only table in the restaurant. For my husband and me, our food arrived 20-25 minutes before the other 3 people at our table were served. By trying to slow our eating to wait, our food was no longer warm. The steak bites were not as tender as the first time and the macaroni and cheese was VERY over-salted. We are not interested in rushing back. One person at our table got the prime rib dinner and it looked like someone had dumped a container of greens on top. The rockfish dinner was good, according to another diner.
