Oak Steakhouse Ratings and Reviews
This is actually the second time I have eaten at Oak and it was again, fantastic.
I booked a reservation at Oak as a farewell dinner for my fiancé. He was deploying and I wanted to give him a fantastic dinner, the night before he left, which Oak did flawlessly. I booked through open table and in the notes section I mentioned his departure etc.. The entire team was just phenomenal. They went above and beyond for us and truly made our last dinner together for almost a year absolutely incredible. I have only eaten at one other steak restaurant in downtown Charleston but Oak has my vote for sure. They are just magnificent all around.
The food was overall salty. The scallops were of good quality but were too salty. The roasted mushrooms had a good flavor but were also too salty. The lobster mac had a good flavor, but we didn't really taste the lobster in it, only the pasta and cheese. We were wanting a glass of Moscato di' Asti, but the bottle had been sitting for a while and it was flat. I wanted taste of it before I ordered a glass. I was offered other kinds of wine by the server who mentioned he was also a Sommelier, but we would have been more pleased if a new bottle was open. We would think that a Sommelier would realize that a new Moscato should've been offered in place of the flat one that I didn't care for. We couldn't get a second glass of Dalmore Scotch, so we continued to another location for more Dalmore Scotch and desserts.
Have eaten here 5-6 times, typically rate this a 5. Dinner this night, New Year’s Eve, was poorly coordinated by the kitchen. Appetizers and salads came slow and at the same time, truffles were great but applied to wrong dish. Still a wonderful atmosphere, great drinks. Steaks best in town.
Made reservations and basically we sat at a bar table with bar wait staff . No wine offered & waiter would disappear for lengthy periods of time . Children were sitting at the bar behind us and people were extremely close to our table . Food was good except for the cold seared scallops . Overall very disappointing experience for its reputation .
We travel to Charleston once a year , and absolutely love to go back to a few favorite restaurants year after year. This year we decided to try the Oak Steakhouse as we had heard that it was started by someone who is originally from our hometown of Alexandria, Virginia. The upshot is that we absolutely LOVED everything about Oak Steakhouse. The N.Y. strip steak was absolutely delicious, as were the salads and all of the sides. We will definitely be returning for another meal on our next trip to Charleston !
Always a great place for a perfect evening. Celebrated our 48th Anniversary and the filets, sides, dessert and service were outstanding. The manager and hostess made us feel very welcome on our special occasion and our server, Oliver, was the best of the best. We always have a great experience at Oak!
Very small table for three people. Hostess told us that she couldn’t move us because they were all booked up, there were two lager tables empty the entire time we ate. Besides that, food was amazing and our waiter was very good
Terrible service - had to get attention of waiter or assistant - beverage glasses left unfilled. Took an hour to get first course served. Poor presentation - filets alone on large plates. A five ounce tenderloin was very good but the plate was filled with enough fries for the table and overwhelmed the meat. Two filets ordered the same temperature but were cooked significantly different. Very, very loud. Could not carry on a conversation without screaming. Mixed grill had good quality meat - but why two beef selections?
From start to finish, it was a great evening. It feels nice when the hostess greets you by name on the way in. Lovely decor inside a historic building - classy without being too stuffy/formal.
Salad was surprisingly good! Lobster mac and cheese was fantastic choice as a side dish. The filet was perfectly cooked though I do wish I had tried a sauce with it just for added flavor. Crab cake was a bit of a letdown - I have had better - but I am stating that as a bit of a crab cake connoisseur with particular high expectations when it comes to crab cakes..... and this is a steak house, not a seafood place so it gets a free pass on that.
Note: if seated on the third floor, and depending on where you are seated, a streetlight can shine right at eye level, making it a bit awkward. Not the restaurant's fault - the waitstaff did make a mention of it while we were seated but I underestimated.
All of this was minor, especially after enjoying a bottle of wine with our meal. Speaking of wine, the waiter helped my wife choose a perfect wine (even gave her a sample taste before ordering the bottle). The little mini cranberry-muffins-to-go gift was a nice touch that we enjoyed the next morning for breakfast.
My wife and I had a great time; our meals were delicious and service was outstanding. We look forward to coming back again someday to try other menu items.
We love Oak and have been dining there for years. This is the first visit we have ever had any issues. The issues we're very minor, but noticeable because of our previous perfect experiences. Service seemed fine, however we never received bread and the appetizer we ordered was missing some items as well. Other than that our food was great and we enjoyed ourselves.
Exceptional service! Exceptional food! My husband and I went to celebrate both of our birthdays! We had multiple staff come up and wish us a happy birthday! I had the Filet Mignon and it was cooked perfectly! Probably the best steak I’ve had! Dave was our server and was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer every question we had! Will be returning, and recommending Oak Steakhouse!
We wanted to have a nice evening with our dearest friends to celebrate the season. We waited a long time for our food to be served. There must have been a problem in the kitchen. The chef sent out some fried onions to hold us over which was a nice gesture since we were starving. I think we were at our table almost an hour before the food arrived. My husband ordered the large filet and I ordered the smaller one. He wanted his medium rare and I requested medium well. His was came well done and mine was rare and it had been butterflied. I don't mind it being butterflied but I should have been asked. Even with that it was too rare. If we hadn't been with friends and the kitchen so backed up we would have sent it back but didn't want to end up eating after our friends. It was a huge disappointment and a very expensive lesson. Maybe another night it would have been different unfortunately but not worth the risk of giving it a second chance.
My husband's steak was very good as were the Brussels sprouts. The steak tartare was unusual. It was good but I wouldn't order it again. The tartare was heavily mixed with aioli so it became a mayo tartare. I thought the aioli was on the side. As with all good steak houses these days, everything was very expensive.
My husband and I had wonderful evening for my Husband's birthday dinner. The restaurant was very elegant and romantic. Our Server was very informative on the menu. Food portions were outstanding. We shared a meal and it was the best steak I ever enjoyed in my life. We will be going back for another special occasion. Thank you Oaks for a wonderful experience and evening.
Reservations at 815pm, arrived at 8pm, told "running on time." At 830 queried and told my table was "finishing up, just a few minutes." At 840 queried and told my table "ordered dessert" so 10-15 more minutes wait. At 850 told table was ready, taken to a table on the "second level" a balcony area next to the bathroom, to a table that was open on our arrival at 8pm...directly above the bar and kitchen with the noise level so loud, casual conversation was not possible. The restaurant design has bar on 1st floor, and open second floor balcony that has maybe 6 tables, but is loud and warm from the bar and kitchen. The 3rd floor was a quiet dining are enclosed and well adorned, good air conditioning. The bottom line problem with this restaurant was a failure to "state acceptance of responsibility for a failed dining experience." Everyone apologized for the wait, while being seated, the hostess even suggested the restaurant shouldn't "offer dessert, because it delayed our seating." No one said, "we screwed up and you fell through the cracks." It was not the other guests fault, it was the fault of management to manage reservations. Shortly after being seated, oysters Rockefeller and shrimp cocktail arrived not ordered by our dining party, in an effort to begin to make up for the error but without explanation. The assistant manager was called, and after two additional requests, she arrived at the table after we'd made the decision to depart. She offered to comp the meal, move us upstairs, anything we wanted, but at that point our dining experience was unrecoverable and we departed. We were offered an opportunity to return and give Oak Restaurant a chance to "make it right." We are still considering.
